Portal is a 2007 puzzle-platform game developed and published by Valve. It was released in a bundle, The Orange Box, for Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and has been since ported to other systems, including Mac OS X, Linux, and Android (via Nvidia Shield).
Portal consists primarily of a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player's character and simple objects using "the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device", a device that can create inter-spatial portals between two flat planes. The player-character, Chell, is challenged and taunted by an artificial intelligence named GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) to complete each puzzle in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center using the portal gun with the promise of receiving cake when all the puzzles are completed. The game's unique physics allows kinetic energy to be retained through portals, requiring creative use of portals to maneuver through the test chambers.
Portal was acclaimed as one of the most original games of 2007, despite criticisms of its short duration and limited story. The game received praise for its originality, unique gameplay and dark story with a humorous series of dialogue. GLaDOS, voiced by Ellen McLain in the English-language version, received acclaim for her unique characterization, and the end credits song "Still Alive", written by Jonathan Coulton for the game, was praised for its original composition and humorous twist. Portal is often cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. Excluding Steam download sales, over four million copies of the game have been sold since its release, spawning official merchandise from Valve including plush Companion Cubes, as well as fan recreations of the cake and portal gun. A standalone version, titled Portal: Still Alive, was released on the Xbox Live Arcade service in October 2008, which added 14 puzzles to the gameplay, and a sequel, Portal 2, which was released in 2011, expanding on the storyline, adding several new gameplay mechanics and a cooperative multiplayer mode.
Portal 2 is a puzzle-platform game developed by Valve. It was released in April 2011 for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The digital PC version is distributed online by Valve's Steam service, while all retail editions were distributed by Electronic Arts.
Like the original Portal (2007), players solve puzzles by placing portals and teleporting between them. Portal 2 adds features including tractor beams, lasers, light bridges, and paint-like gels that alter player movement or allow portals to be placed on any surface. In the single-player campaign, players control Chell, who navigates the dilapidated Aperture Science Enrichment Center during its reconstruction by the supercomputer GLaDOS (Ellen McLain); new characters include robot Wheatley (Stephen Merchant) and Aperture founder Cave Johnson (J. K. Simmons). In the new cooperative mode, players solve puzzles together as robots Atlas and P-Body (both voiced by Dee Bradley Baker). Jonathan Coulton and The National produced songs for the game.
Portal 2 received acclaim for its gameplay, balanced learning curve, pacing, dark humor, writing, and acting. It has been described as one of the greatest video games of all time by numerous publications and critics.
Portal 2 draws from the award-winning formula of innovative gameplay, story, and music that earned the original Portal over 70 industry accolades and created a cult following.
The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game.
The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.

I don't think she would. Because we want GlaDOS to insult Chell not the player. If a player actually made a mistake and got called dumb by the game they might feel dumb and we want the players to feel smart. The nuance is to find ways to have her insult Chell for things without insulting the players controlling her. Although personally I would find that sort of response hilarious.

This backup solution is relatively easy to implement, but it is astonishing that Valve itself takes such unlikely scenarios into account, where every other game developer would not have built anything in the case that there is no cube in the room what even would be impossible without really forcing it ... However, this could work with maybe a collider that fills the whole room 13 and as soon as the amount of cubes that are kept in this collider falls to "if (CurrentRoomCubes == 0)" then the exit door opens together with a few Glados voicelines ...

It is also possible to trap yourself in test chambers 4 and 17 and get dialog. 17 is not straightforward, since lodging the companion cube out of your reach does not always work. The chamber 4 dialog is the same as chamber 5 I think. Chamber 17 dispenses a new companion cube through the vital apparatus vent, along with accompanying commentary as to your performance.

  • @mruys

    @mruys

    3 жыл бұрын

Actually, chamber 17 isn't like this. So, when the cube goes into the room with a button pedestal and the door closes, the game counts this state as trapped and opens the door. But, if you will be trapped in the room by yourself, the game won't see this state as you being trapped. So this is a way to trap yourself permanently without being able to escape without using cheats or without reloading the level.

I didn't realise you could do this. I just recently replayed portal 1 and triggered this dialog in the room where you get the dual portal gun. Don't remember exactly what I did, but it wasn't long after I got down to the gun that she opened the down sliding door for me.

Fun fact, you can actually trap yourself in test chamber 13 twice in one attempt. First by putting both cubes in the first room, then putting them both in the exit.

For those of us who havent played portal, it would be nice to know what dialogue was hidden and what was in game. Also I didn’t really know how you got trapped in the first one, for example, because you still made your way to the exit tube.

Okay so here it goes. Chamber 5- Hidden dialogue - You are not a good person, you know that right? Trapped- We need two cubes and place them on the buttons to open the door. However, we place one portal behind the gate and send one of the cubes over there and remove the portal. Now we have lost access to that cube and hence cannot open the gate, essentially trapping ourselves. However, GLaDOS calls us out and open the door so that we can finish the puzzle. Chamber 13- Hidden dialogue - Despite the best efforts of the enrichment Center staff to ensure the safe performance of all authorised activities, you have managed to ensnare yourself permanently inside this room. A complimentary escape hatch will open in 3... 2.... 1.... Trapped- Same as chamber 5. We need cubes to open the gate and we send them to the other side of the gate through the portal and remove the portal. We lose access to them and now can not open the door. Chamber 14- Hidden dialogue - Despite the best efforts of the enrichment Center staff to ensure the safe performance of all authorised activities, you have managed to ensnare yourself permanently inside this room. A complimentary escape hatch will open in 3... 2.... 1.... Trapped- We place cube at an unreachable place, and it is required to solve the test. However, this level can still be solved. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKdpk8R_YcLHfNo.html Chamber 15 Hidden dialogue- same as chamber 5 Trapped - we enter the panel which is timed and opened by a switch outside. Since we are inside the panel, we cannot open it and hence are trapped in there. Chamber 18 Hidden dialogue- Same as Chamber 15 Trapped- Same as chamber 15 Hope this helped!

Isn’t there a way to trap yourself in a much earlier room? I think I remember one where it’s just a button in a room and you simply use a cube to keep the door open. What the person did was lean the cube on the door. Step on the button. The cube falls in between the doors. Gets jammed. Then the cube is pushed through. Effectively getting trapped in the room. You literally had to reload the level, I believe.

  • @potatoenugget

i found another way to get stuck at chamber 18 You have to resolve the chamber as usual until you get the cube. After drop the cube on the switch and go to the platform that connects that room with the next one and put a portal on the wall that throws you at the switch. Then jump into the pit and make another portal to throw yourself back at the switch and then make a portal that is connected with the one in the pit and drop the cube in.

I did this by semi accident in the first room you wake up in. The crate got clipped into the door as it was closing and became one with space. And im not sure if its portal 1 or 2, but I recall there is a time you can trap yourself and GladOS is comments on how astounding that is but insists you will have to stay trapped. Forcing a checkpoint reload. Unless i dreamed it.
