Portable In-Ear Monitoring with the XR-18, PSM-300, and XVive U4

Here's a brief run-down of my portable in-ear monitoring rig, comprising a Behringer XR-18 digital mixer, Shure PSM300, and XVive U4 In-Ear monitoring systems. I've gradually built this up over the last two years, so hopefully this can help others looking to build a small mixing & monitoring solution for their small band or home studio!

The Xvive U3 systems drop out when near a WiFi router...move the U3 transmitter a meter or two away from the router. It's greatly improves the performance.

I have this setup… really nice… I’m thinking of getting the Waves LV1

Great setup! And I truly know it's a good one: I also got the mixer, the special rack ears from Etsy (highly recommended!), got the excactly same case AND the Xvive too! Still looking at my options with a UHF-transmitter, but gotta have a little break first after burning so much cash already :) Our other band members have cheap Behringer wired in-ear receivers at the moment, which works pretty well for our amateur band.

Awesome! Yeah, the Shure is quite an investment. Unless WiFi congestion or latency are an issue, the Xvive is just fine! Thanks for watching.

Planning on the same setup, minus the Shure system. I just got a 6U shallow rack, but I plan on mounting some stuff on the other side, given that most of the rack gear is shallow anyway - like the Power Conditioner and some other things! Our band is planning the Xvives for each member.

Right on David! Absolutely, there's a ton of unused real estate behind the mixer. I see to velcro the router to the back of the XR18 for an even more compact setup, but just got lazy about it after a while.

Hi, great video and setup… I have a similar case, back and front comes off, but also top lid which is a compartment that secures my laptop in place… The only issue I had was the rack Mount ears… I didn’t realise I could inset them till now than you 👍🏽 One question: I’d like to have power access on the box… ie… The snake powercord UK C13, I’d like an adapter already inserted on the box (female) rather than open box, I just plug-in to the power female connector

Good point on the power supply! Yeah, having the recessed mixer really improves the compactness of the entire thing.

Just got my Shure PSM300 today (with P3RA receiver and SE215) ..And I'm getting a bunch of interference on all tested channels on the H20 band (518-542MHz) I was really expecting this system to just work and it's too bad.. Have you had those sorts of issues? I have several sennheiser wireless mic systems, and have no problems with those, in the low 800 MHz range

I haven't. Compared to a bandmate's Galaxy Audio system, the Shure had fewer dropouts and static. But truth be told, the Shure is much noisier than the Xvive, but in a live setting, the improved signal reliability and zero latency makes up for it.

Great Video! earned my sub. Have you ever tried to livestream with that rig? Also, how do you mix on a gig with it? iPad or something else? Thanks for the awesome content!

Thank you so much Michael! I'm not a big enough deal to livestream lol, but it was useful when I did bass lessons over Zoom. Using the Aux sends, I was able to easily set up my ideal blend of personal monitoring and Zoom audio while also being able to use a Blue Yeti mic going to the PC. For live mixing, we had a friend manage the main mix on a laptop, while the band members used the X Air app on phones & tablets for managing in-ear mixes (aux sends).

Is it physically possible to stack 5 X-Vive U4's side by side on 5 aux channels for 5 in-ear monitors?

  • @gsimongear

I'm not sure...I don't think so. I'd recommend extending them with short XLR cables, as the Xvives are wider than a normal cable ending and probably wouldn't fit next to each other.

What i can never understand is why don’t they have low cost stereo overview mix + mono instrumentalist higher gain in ear. Isn’t this what all musicians ask for? Click track/guide track stereo + eg bass gtr with individual gain control for the bass musician to add volume. Seems like these personal mixes requires too much cost with multiple high quality di boxes
