Musicians tend to appreciate groups like this more than non-musicians. Part of my appreciation is being thoroughly aware of how difficult it is to make what they play look easy.

It's definitely not random techniques and lines just thrown in - there is a clear melody throughout the whole song, you just need a decent understanding of music to comprehend it. It's like when you first listen to Jazz and it just sounds like noise. The more you listen, the easier you're able to follow what's happening.

@@cm9241 no shit - I’m not saying it’s complicated in terms of music theory - it’s easy to dissect for anyone who understands theory. I don't think you guys have the ears fully trained for this type of music yet. There is a very clear melodic line throughout the entirety of the song and all the "random" runs and technical playing is working off of that same exact theme. The playing is complex, but the musical structure of the song is actually pretty straightforward. I know its extremely tough to do first time reaction videos with this genre of music and come out with a full understanding of the song, but would highly recommend giving it a few playthroughs for your own enjoyment, this is one of the best songs I have heard in many many years.

Polyphia actually have tons of melody and composition of master class musicianship. They are an instrumental band. They play their instruments in a way that they themselves are the lyrics. It doesn't have to be a repetitive loop of licks and riffs that play for 3 minutes. Its like....so highly composed and written that its actually nuts. I'm not even a musician and I'm hooked on this sound.

@@Vivi_9 I thought so too but he is clearly "confused" at best. He thinks that the melodic parts with harmonics was some random moment to flex and showoff, and said it sounds like multiple songs but both sections are different arrangement based on the same two chord progressions. The pace of the melody was too fast for him because it's not linear and he couldn't enjoy the rhythmic parts of the song so he was overwhelmed and flustered at every change. I mean for anyone to have anything bad to say about Polyphia shows the level of musical knowledge. They don't have to love it, but how ignorant would one be to say that Whitney Houston is just flexing all the time just because she's powerful for example? Not hating on them but they are often very close minded and despite them trying not to show it, it gets very judgemental sometimes. Even when reacting to hiphop or pop or whatever. Anyway, tons of reactors with much more positive energy to enjoy out there! Having lots of followers doesn't make the content better

The intensity of the music almost makes you forget there is a continuous melody through the entire song. From the duality of guitar parts, whistling (listen again) super tight drums and thumping bass (although simple very effective) makes this creation even more impressive. The dynamics are fantastic. I started playing guitar long before bands like Polyphia came around but I did at least get in when it was possible to teach yourself many advanced techniques simply by looking up videos on the internet. When I bought my second guitar and my first decent amp I also picked up a simple music theory book which came along with 2 free guitar lessons from the music shop that I bought the gear from and with even that small amount of "official" music training I've found that there's really no limits to the things I can do as long as I put in the practice. So while I'll probably never be able to claim to be as talented or as well-practiced as Tim and Scottie of Polyphia as playing music isn't my job but simply a hobby for me, I can at least understand and appreciate what they are doing and even practice some of their advanced techniques to incorporate into my own playing and songwriting. Obviously, music like any other work of art is subjective so this isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea but what I love about Polyphia is that when people hear their music they can just appreciate the skill and the technique if nothing else regardless of their opinions on if the music is their jam or not.

What you boys are hearing are well rounded musicians that spend a vast majority of their time not only playing instruments but seeking to play music together. Polyphia always has behind the song so they show you how they make it and its very nice to see

These cats are taking elements from cats such as Al Di Meola, Herbie Hancock, and Quincy Jones with these melodies. This is sophisticated music 100%. Intelligent hooks that you can walk away whistling (note the ending) while technically slaying their instruments. Modern day composers showing what’s possible. I’m going to go and break my guitars now 🤣🤣

I just wanted to add to him saying that theyre not writing a song.... they write chorus's, bridges, etc but just as guitar riffs. He turns rap/hiphop beats and rhythm schemes into guitar riffs

Polyphia uses some of the same rhythms from hiphop and different instruments are making up the tune to make the harmony. That's why it sounds like chaos and yet its not. Like the guitar might play a part and then mix it up with the bass playing part of the guitar part etc etc. Since they are both using different tunes from different instruments and playing the same harmony it has this wild sound.
