For anyone thinking that when she hit the dogs, it's animal abuse, it's not. As Richard said, they are not pet dogs and will fight if she does not show control. Her hitting them is less painful and will cause a lot less damage than what they would do to each other, so she has no choice. Plus those sled dogs are as hard as nails.

Through their thick fur and hide, I doubt they felt much. And yes, those dogs would do far greater damage to each other than some woman with a stick lightly slapping them would. It's the show of force that matters, not the impact of the thing. Hell, even my dog has cracked his head on the bottom of the pantry door when he's excited (he likes to jump in place, it's cute as hell) and barely flinched. Just kept jumping away. And he's about as domesticated as a dog can get.

There's 2 choices. Many dogs ripping each other apart with their teeth for a prolonged period of time. Or choice 2 the woman assuming alpha male status and dispensing a few hits with a blunt object. Choice 2 is way quicker and kinder if you love animals. Otherwise you have lots of blood and injured dogs, plus that means you just sit there watching them tear each other apart rather than stopping it.

A lot of people here pointing out that the dogs are pack animals, wilderness instincts & natural behaviour etc. Being tied to a sled to drag humans around has nothing at all to do with nature or any natural life these dogs might have had. They are often chained in crates when not in use, discarded like trash when they are injured from being worked, bred for a higher number of dogs for the tourist season, used and overworked all day for tourist rides in high season & killed off at the end because it’s cheaper to breed new dogs than feed the high number of dogs during the off season. There is no need for this in the 21st century. You can go look all of this up online.

For all those curious about the C47/DC3 that James and Jeremy found: Up that far north used to be a remote Canadian weather station up there called "Isachsen" which was part of a network of such stations called "Joint Arctic Weather Stations." The plane itself was attempting to take off despite being overloaded, suffering a buildup of ice and snow on the cockpit/wings, and 5 inches of snow on the runway. It attempted to take off several times before hitting a large snow mound. The collision ripped off the undercarriage of the plane, the landing skis and tore the engines off of the wings and sent it skidding about 3000 feet across the frozen bay near the runway. Among the crew of 10 aboard, the only injuries suffered were minor cuts and bruises.

It really annoys me that they cut out the segment with Richard reaching the secluded, temporarily-abandoned cabin with Matty. It was such a peaceful, wonderful moment - Richard opening up the unhinged door and discovering a veritable treasure-trove of comfort in the middle of the arctic wilderness - a small kitchen with plenty of unspoiled perishables for use, including a fully-functional stove; a bedroom with a couple of bunks and flimsy mattresses that would have afforded ample comfort in comparison to the tents they were camping in... And all the while, the polar sunset was shining in through the windows on Richard's face like God beckoning him to indulge in these simple pleasures rather than continue on with his campaign to beat Jeremy and James to the pole... Like I said, it was a truly great scene and it's a shame that the BBC decided to cut it.

This show was the one thing all of us had in common. We would just chill, eat and laugh together whilst watching . I remember when the snow dogs came on on the tv and my dad just stared at our husky and just randomly asked “I wonder if Hugo (dogs name) could do the same”. I may sound over sentimental or whatnot but this show was truly a big part of my childhood. Most memories regarding my younger days was around this show.

It’s interesting all the discussions about dogs and Hammond’s thoughts on dog sledding. During the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, the British disliked what it took to dog sled in the Antarctic (which involves killing, eating the dogs, and feeding dog meat to the other dogs) to the degree that they disliked using them, instead relying on man-hauling, lugging shit with their own muscle. That policy is what let Amundsen get to the South Pole first, he was able to do what was needed to stay alive, including eating the dogs. But the British dislike of the practice got Scott and his polar team killed.
