Playing with the Canon 300mm f2.8

I had the opportunity to play with the Canon 300mm f2.8 lens with a 2x extender. What a beast of a lens.
Enjoy the video, and please check out my other videos of me playing with different lenses.

I bought the latest version (II) of this lens two years ago. It was 6,200/- dollars. I also use it with 2x or 1.4x extenders both on FF and APS-C bodies. Needless to say, results are excellent. This prime telephoto premium lens is the best choice among the top four produced by Canon. It maintains good balance among the criteria necessary for a good portable tele lens. The rest 3 suffer from some bottlenecks mainly, weight.

@@wokeupandsmellthecoffee214, good decision. You won't regret it. Even if you go mirrorless, this lens will still be equally efficient just with the help of an adaptor. In that case, try to get a Canon adaptor for best results. I don't use MILC now but, if I do, I'll certainly use brand adaptors.

All depends on what you are comparing it to. It is a great lens, but I’m more than happy with my Sigma 150-600 lens. I’m not printing anything more than 36 inches, so I don’t notice huge difference. It is sharper, but only if I’m pixel peeping.

A used one (3800 USD) from Map Camera (Japan's biggest) "left shipping country" 4 days ago and will be here in Norway in a few days. (25% VAT will be added at the border :-( ). I (65) have restrained myself for years, but couldn't bear it any longer. I just had to have it :-). I asked a friend how it compares to my 100-400 II (IQ-wise). He said it was "like night and day". Everyone is just filled with superlatives about this lens, even with a 1.4x III (have) or 2x III (ordered). I think I will sell my 100-400 II, and finally say "No more zooms" (like I did 20-25 years ago). I still have the 11-24mm though, but that one will stay with me forever. No chance that Tamron, Sigma, or Canon will challenge/improve that one. I also ordered the Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter. I use the 5Ds R. I'll also have an HP Z2100 44" printer.

From Bryan Carnathan's review (www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-300mm-f-2.8-L-IS-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx) ): "I am not a big extender user, but the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens is so amazingly sharp that the with-extender results are still remarkable. And I had no problems handholding the with-2x-resulting 600mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens.[both v. III] I have uploaded a sample picture from this combination for your review. The Brown Pelican image was captured near sunset at f/8 (f/5.6 results are not as sharp), 1/250 with a handheld Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III in RAW format using the Neutral Picture Style (lower contrast for better histogram). The JPG sample was processed in DPP using the Standard Picture Style, sharpness set to "2" (low) and saturation set to "1". Here is the with-extender sample: JPG (11.0 MB) | RAW (26.4 MB) (License granted for personal gear-review purposes only)" media.the-digital-picture.com/Images/Other/Canon-EF-300mm-f-2.8-L-IS-II-USM-Lens/Canon-EF-300mm-f-2.8-L-IS-II-USM-Lens-2x-RAW.zip

Personally, I would get the IS. That way, if you don’t have your tripod with you, you can still use the lens. I’ve used the 70-200 f4 with and without IS, and the IS version is definitely worth it.

From Bryan Carnathan's review (www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-300mm-f-2.8-L-IS-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx) "Wildlife tends to be most active in the low-light hours of the day, and Wildlife photographers capturing less-active subjects will find plenty of use for IS in this lens - even when shooting from a tripod. Canon's super telephoto lenses have a secondary IS mode that automatically senses a tripod being used and focuses on eliminating mirror slap, shutter and tripod vibrations."
