Canon Telephoto Lenses - Focus Preset

Lance goes through how he uses the focus preset on a canon super telephoto lens to get the best out of his hide photography sessions.
This simple, but underused tool, greatly decreases the amount of times the camera misses focus due to the large distance between the small subject and the far away background, meaning his keeping rate is significantly higher.
Lance uses this technique not only in photographic hides, such as this one, but also in various other wildlife photography scenarios.
We are Panthera Photo Safaris, based in South Africa. When we are not making these instructional videos, we are in the field with our clients ensuring they capture their once in a life time safari images. Not only do we have a number of set departure safaris each year, but also travel with couples, groups or individuals on private photo safaris as well.
We are also a tour operator here in Africa, so if you are looking to book a Safari, even without a photographic guide by your side, get in touch today to plan your dream photographic getaway.

Really useful. I'm heading to a hide in the UK to photograph Kingfishers next week and this is exactly what I was looking for. I don't use my 500mm f4 to anywhere near its full potential. Thank you :)

I wish they would update the firmware on the series II lenses to have the dual presets. That would be killer on my 500 f/4 II. Especially since they never made a series III version of that one. I guess I'll have to save up for the RF600 at this point... perhaps 8 years from now... LOL

It sure would! It's very sad when simple things like this aren't considered. RF600 would be a dream!

That is some beautiful bird watching place! Thanks for explanation...first day of using 200-400mm f4 and was not really sure what this means. Instead of googling I knew someone on KZread would explain it perfectly. Just wondering, are you using back button focus? Thanks again! God bless you!

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes I use back button focus! On my canon mirrorless bodies I actually use 3 back buttons simultaneously!

Thanks for explaining the feature! But is it suppose to save the last setting ? Or do you need to set it again every session?

Hello. If your camera turns off it will unfortunately reset....but if it just sleeps it will remember it (at least in my cameras, it may differ with other brands).

This is very true. We are seeing a greater increase of clients renting long lenses for their "once a year" type safaris :)

It make anyways much more sense for something like once a year safaris, but when it comes to the hobby birder like me for example… you just need to OWN THE LENSES. You cant just rent the same lens every few weeks And what i know, the only really affordable stuff is pretty much a few lenses for each system. At canon there are more and more 100-400 II affordable, i tried to replace the 150-600 sigma with it but somehow i own now both and dont want to give away any of them lol The 100-400II is very awesome for video, macro and on full frame, but also sharp enough for APS-C at open aperture as a nice allrounder telezoom But the 200mm extra reach of the sigma are in overall just awesome, the F6.3, often used at F8 and the heavy weight are mainly the reasons i use nowadays often the 100-400 over the sigma
