Rightly so. Killing a PC at a time when the player can't be at the game is just a shitty move. It takes no effort to handwave a reason for the character to be perfectly safe for a single session.

@@daggern15 Most of the time you can just have them not be with the party. The rest you can set them up fighting their own npc narratively instead of with roles in actual combat. Just have me hang out.

There is only one acceptable way to kill off a character while the player is absent, with their permission, or as a way to remove the character and avoid future entanglements should the player have been booted for some reason.

the golden rule for killing a PC when the player is absent: don't.

Kudos for not calling out Wil Wheaton by name in that last story.

The thing I can see with the second story is one, obviously it is more the rogue's fault because he should have been honest when asked "Is this an actual problem or just in game your characters don't like each other" be honest and be like "I can see it becoming an actual out of game problem because it is getting at me little by little that my character is bonding with an NPC and your character keeps having negative things to say". And also we don't know just how negative the other PC was being about the NPC. For all we know it was literally every time the Rogue tried to have a positive thing the other PC would immediately follow with something negative and that builds up after a while.

I think the awesome part about the awesome story was player: "this better not be this" dm: "it is now" also I'm watching this while I really should be doing session prep

1) for the first story: DAMN. wtf was the barbarian guy's problem? why couldnt bro just let them play the game? yeah if i had been in that campaign, i wouldve had a few words with the DM. i get it was the DM's first time, but still 2) for the second story: 🤣🤣🤣 WHAT??!?!?!? OK W DM btw. Handled it pretty well, and made the right choices. sounds like a really fun campaign! EDIT: DIDNT RELIZE THERE WAS MORE LMAO 3) for the third story: gosh damn. i feel you dude, i never get any good rolls either😆 yeah, um, my advise? never trust a bard with shinny things (also the stuff about davy jones was pretty funny) great stories guys 👍

Since you asked I listen to these at work. I work nightshift at a hospital (non-medical) and these stories help keep the shift entertaining.

I folded a load of laundry while listening. Perfect amount of time too. Finished up right as the video ended.

Hey duke and wife, I just started watching your content and I’ve been bingeing these videos. Can’t wait to see the drama in this video!

The first story actually reminded me at a problem I ran into in three different mentalities that kept blowing my mind. 1.There are ppl who don't care if their character dies in a stupid way that wasn't even selfinflicted, (like your gm rolling the stats of the enemies because he didn't want to prep the fight and the enemies non crit hit dating 90% of your tanks hitpoints) 2.There are ppl who don't care if the gm intentionally kidnaps, kills, or hunts one specific playercharacter, (even if it means the players character get's kidnapped in the first 5min of a session and everyone else gets to keep playing) 3.There are ppl who fully trust the gm to not kill them (not with the over powered npc sworn to kill you, the randomly rolled stats, or anything really, despite plottarmor never beeing discussed) 3.a: There are ppl who enjoy plottarmor. It's fine if they are cool with it, but it blows my mind that they are cool with it. I defenitly wouldn't be cool with it. What I am doing right now? Eating sin! Pizza with pasta on it.

In the first story; new GM was using the deck on many things. Because one of thr cards is that you have to fight death, but I don't know how barbarian got his magic sword when I think only one person is allowed to have a D.O.M.T. (getting a magical item is a card.)

I usually watch these on Sunday morning (Europe timez yeah) while eating breakfast, while at noon we start our weekly dnd game :)

I'm usually folding laundry during these stories. Gotta do those weekend chores.

One time i played in a oneshot with some friends. I was playing a hexblade warlock pirate character and one of my friends a ranger (or eldritch knight i cannot remember) Our party was tasked with hunting down a hydra that had been terrorizing a nearby town and we agreed to the bounty. All was fine thus far, and we delved into the cave system that was the lair of the hydra. My character, being a hexblade warlock, was one of the two front-liners in the battle. The ranger character used a bow and trick arrows (he metagamed it so that he'd have fire damage against the hydra so we killed it pretty fast). By the end of the fight i was just above single digits for health and he was at full health. I did my job keeping the monster away from the ranged characters while struggling to stay standing (warlocks dont have the highest health pool). Only after the fight the ranger's player asked the dm: "would i be right in assuming the warlock pirate has a bounty on him?" The dm says "uhhhh sure? Why?" "I shoot him in the back." Everyone was shocked and the ranger player giggled, and when questioned about it further, he kept arguing that logically it would make sense that he (who now is revealed to be a bounty hunter) could now take down my character. My character went down almost immediately with two shots. I managed to hellish rebuke him before he downed me with the second shot. He complained that the fight was anticlimactic and the session ended with him dragging me away and recieving gold. The worst part is that afterwards he proceeded to joyfully explain his thought process and schemes: when we were making our characters and after i explained my character idea, he silently created his character with the end goal of capturing mine for more gold. He didnt ask if i wanted an epic battle after the hydra (i would have been fine if he asked me so i would have been prepared but he blindsided me). He crafted his spells against what i had (spells that limit my mobility or teleport me away etc.). I built my entire hexblade warlock around melee attacks. Sure i did 25 damage with the hellish rebuke but that did nothing to his undamaged 60+ hp from the previous fight with the hydra. I could have eldritch blasted him but i didnt get a turn i was downed so fast. They all joked about how they might play a prison break oneshot soon and i could play him again with a vengeance plot but i just sat silently fuming. I hate player vs player and this almost made me quit the group. And if i had a petty bone in my body I'd love to do something to get him back but as i said i hate pvp and would most likely fail in the attempt (he's a power gamer type of player who loves to win while i love the story). I dont begrudge him his fun, i just wish he'd have asked me first.

i started out the video eating and then just sat watching for the rest of the video fielding occasional discord messages

I'm working out in the gym. My last dnd session was 4-5 years ago and ended with everyone disbanding the game because the boardgame club owner kept overruling everyone as a player, another player kept doing morally messed up shit but then declared out of character they hate my character for doing something bad and then stormed off, and I just hated how everyone was using meta knowledge and pushing an incoherent narrative

I always love drawing whilst I listen to these videos, they never fail to keep me entertained whilst I work on characters or just doodle sometimes lol

Its funny that the high schooler thinks that being in high school instead of middle school suddenly means the GM isn't still basically an inexperienced child. They will probably be laughing about these ridiculous game sessions when they are older.

In the first story some context that I think was missing from their description. I think they were drawing from the Deck of Many Things. Sounds like the Barbarian drew the Key and sounds like they home brewed the Skull card or something to be carried out by the Barbarian. Still, do not kill PC's without consent, do not include PC's without the player involved.

Well, since you asked: while I watch this video, I'm trying out an app I just downloaded on my phone, which lets you write sheet music. This... is not easy to multitask while listening to these stories, so I may just put it down for a few minutes. (Anyway. I'm still watching, so onto the next story.)

I'm petting my cat while watching, because I'm taking a break from working on some stuff in Blender, and waiting for a roleplay session to start in about 3 hours. I think it sounds like Rogue in the second story might have had some other problems going on in their life too, and the D&D group got unlucky in that he let all his frustration about other things go on the rest of the group. It just seems odd that he agreed to all of that mediation, and took it pretty well, and sessions went well for a little while, then suddenly exploded. If I'm right about that, I hope Rogue's life got/gets better.

I once made the horrible, horrible mistake of throwing a slur at one of my co-players in anger. We were in a battle and his character betrayed us and we ended up dying. In anger, I called him a m*ck which is a slur against people of Irish descent (about 4 players in the group were Irish). I apologized afterwards and while I'm friends with most of them still, I haven't spoken to the player who betrayed us in a while. I can understand why though because of what I said. I let myself get carried away in the game and I insulted someone who was, at the time, a friend. Don't let yourself get too carried away by a game. It's just a game and it's not worth ending friendships over.

It's not DM's fault that rogue harassed a player over her character not liking a pet NPC. Instead of being mature about disliking the roleplaying direction, rogue instead faked an apology over harassing druid in private messages than cursing her out over something he said he was over.

Story 1 DM hated OP and wants them gone, but doesn’t have the gall to say it.
