Planning for Next Year | Charlotte Mason Option | Alveary? AO? Making my own?

Comment down below what YOU are thinking of using for next year!
Today, I'm talking through my thought process for choosing curriculum for next year. I am choosing between 3 different options - Alveary, AO, or compiling my own Classical Charlotte Mason course of study. We talk through these ideas and how we can apply our educational philosophy and our Mother's thinking love toward making this decision.
I talked about a Schole Sisters podcast episode that can be found here:

We used the CMEC this past year and we will be using the Alveary next year because of book selection and lesson plans. I do want to say that the CMEC membership is soooooo more than a book list. I believe you go into that in a previous video but I wanted to comment in case someone walks away with the idea that they are paying for a book list. The amount of resources is absolutely incredible. My goal this first year (my oldest is 6) was to learn the philosophy and method as much as possible and the CMEC has many options for that. I was in private mother education course which was fantastic, I took advantage of the various challenges, past mini retreat workshops, the form meetings, etc. their guides were extremely helpful and gives you the ability to go at your child’s pace. And countless relevant Parent review articles are provided encouraging you back to the original sources. Anyway, it’s amazing amount of resources! If I had the financial means to keep that subscription going, even as I try the Alveary, I truly would. Their resources for mother-teacher training simply cannot be matched. The program also includes a robust kinderleben program for families with younger children. It’s not just a guide as included in the form meeting discussions.Anyway, thanks for sharing your journey and I’m excited for your family as you explore options for next year.

Yes, it is absolutely more than a booklist - I agree! I actually recorded myself something along those lines, but I said it in a weird and clunky way so I edited it out haha, but I felt the regret of not saying it more clearly so I could include that caveat. Thank you for clarifying for other mother-teachers to benefit from your perspective and experience!

This is where I've landed too, so I'm really interested to see what you decide to pull from. I've ended up using a lot of ambleside books and lists but also added a lot in and combined grades together as we love learning together as a family. We are also from New Zealand, so I wanted to add in a lot of our own history, geography, language, and Māori legends and myths.

Thank you for sharing your journey! I did Alveary last year and while there is a lot I liked about it, the number of substitutions and my perceived lack of freedom makes me hesitate this year. I also like more history than they include! :) Your comments in your videos just might give me the courage to branch out on my own and make up my own year! My kids are similar ages to yours and there's just so much I want to put in for them and I am excited about the possibility of designing it myself! (with lots of necessary and excellent help from all the CM and classical sources out there!)

I have found that no matter what curriculum I choose, I always make adjustments to fit the children I have in front of me (as was expected by Miss Mason). Because of that, I have chosen AO (free!) as a starting point, make substitutions and look for supplemental resources as needed. ❤ Best of luck with your search and decision.

I was going to do the CMEC until I saw your video, and then I've been looking at Alveary but now I've been making my own curriculum/gathering of resources and using AO as a reference. I'm still looking for grab and go lesson planning when possible but and I'm so thrilled to mix and match. I think this better suits my personality and am really looking forward to the year ahead! Thanks for your videos!

Hi America. Thank you for your videos. I saw your 1st one and this one. I am currently a CMEC member going to Form 1B. I also only found positive videos about CMEC, and I love hearing the pros and cons of anything. I do love it and am excited for the upcoming year. I enjoy your perspective and have subscribed.

I am so excited to have found you, we sound so similar in our ideas and philosophy and I’m exactly at the same stage as you! Also considered the Alveary and ultimately decided to compile my own for next year. I am curious what phonics curriculum you use, if you are willing to share.

Love this approach! I’ve settled on using AO as my main guide but then swapping some books/combining my children for some subjects as I discern is best. I also love A Gentle Feast and use some suggestions from their booklists. It’s so freeing to have a good grasp of underlying principles and then have the freedom to be able to piece things together for our own unique family!

Yes, I completely agree! It is fun to feel the firm foundation of philosophy and the freedom to implement that philosophy in our homeschool. Thank you for watching! I'll definitely be pulling from AO but I haven't looked at AGF's list at all. I'll have to check it out!

I got the CM simple studies form guides and started using a gentle feast mixed with AO. I basically pair AO years with the AGF cycles and it gives me the best of both worlds. I can do some family style and some independent. I look at form instead of grade. The form guides help stay focused within that but I use agf and and AO for more of the booklists I guess and to stay grounded with my history cycle. We don’t use all the resources.

I have an open and go curriculum roght now... not Charlotte Mason, but this past year I have really been exploring CM and my heart wants to go that direction. I also have more of an open approach and often read through things faster than the scheedule and it is life giving to have the flexibility to open home education to a more flexible approach, ecessary with having rrally little ones.

I agree with all of this and watched your videos. I am excited to hear your journey and see what you have chosen I am coming from the CMEC as well. I stumbled upon TruthQuest history and it’s everything I have been searching for in order to learn history in chronological order with no gaps. I joined the alveary as well and will fill in with AO. The only subject I have to figure out is nature study/science. We want projects and experiments so it’s tricky.
