WOW i loved this! As a future student teacher, this backward design was sososososo helpful! im a *soon to be, as of 2020* secondary social studies -history teacher, but this still made the planning process seem WAY easier than my professor taught us in college lol. thanks so much for breaking it down and i really loved this video!!!

WOW! This is so helpful! I just finished my student teaching semester for my Bachelor's degree, and this video would have been amazing 6 months ago, lol! I'm student teaching for a full year for my Master's next school year, so this video is still super helpful!

Love your videos. I would love it if you did a teacher-tuber Q&A or a video about growing your channel as a teacher.

Just a question how are you going to go to the ask so quickly… Act one and two are very heavy do you have to read that in class?

How do you decide on standards? Do you choose randomly at the beginning? Do you plan to adress them all or is there a system behind it? Where I teach I feel obliged to plan for complete coverage of all standards, but I could never test for mastery of all of them. So how can I choose? How do you know which skill you want to see mastery in?

Thank you for this helpful video!! I teach 7th grade ELA, and I love seeing other teacher’s ideas! You’re doing a great job making this engaging for your students!!💯😁Do you have any videos on your channel that discuss how you address grammar standards in your classroom? This is my major area that I want to improve in!

Thank you for this video and explaining the backwards planning and having a visual aid. I am curious what your deeper more in-depth finding looks like, including how you break down your 90-minute. Can you talk a little bit about the gallery walks in gallery tours? I haven't done those but I hear teacher reference them love them and so forth. I also have found that I was doing too much of the talkin and the students needed to do to do more of though work in learning on their own and to develop those skills. I'm also interested in your higher level learning questions that are covered or that you use during this time where those at? Do you write it in your lesson plans or do you have them on a sign in your room? I know in the past these are questions I've been asked not always replace of good nature and support from fellow staff members let's say. Lastly how much time do you think you spend backwards planning this way and how far out ahead do you try to do this planning? Thank you again for the video and for your time in the comments.

I love these planning videos. I plan the same way so this makes so much sense to me and gives me some great ideas! How much time do you have for your class periods? I teach 8th ELA and I have 80 minute blocks but I feel like I have such limited time to accomplish what I want to accomplish, especially in the area of writing. I try to avoid giving too much work to do at home because here in Taiwan, kids will have tons of after school classes, lessons, and clubs, plus English cram school, and they are already exhausted. I read aloud to them the first 15 minutes, give them independent reading time for enjoyment for about 25 minutes, and then the last 40 minutes we focus on the reading and writing for whatever unit we are doing. I feel like it is not enough time though.

Teaching in Taipei I know that feeling of being pressed for time- even with 90 minute classes it still feels like I’m rushing sometimes! I have been trying to combine as many skills that I can with fewer texts in order to get as much as possible out of each day... 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve found some success with choice reading lit circles, so I’m going to keep experimenting in that area!

The Caffeinated Classroom Reading Lit Circles is a good idea! I have been looking at book clubs also. This Romeo and Juliet unit is great too because it combines the reading and writing skills into one unit so you don't have to try to squeeze in two different lessons a period.

Do you read the play during class? I struggle so much with thinking of cool, fun, supplemental activities because my kiddos’ reading levels are so low that, if we don’t read everything in class, they don’t read it at all.

  • @ThatGirlWithTheCoffee

This makes me feel so small- with either 40-minute or 60-minute lessons depending on the school, I don't get to cover anything like that much with my kiddos. Like getting an act done in three classes would be good for me. I suppose since you have the experience behind you, while I've only just qualified, plus different standards here in Ireland, but still- mouse me today...

That Girl With The Coffee Oh no! I’m so sorry you feel small- I really think a lot of it is due to just being experienced at teaching this particular material! The more you do it and see what students can do in a given amount of time, the more you’ll have a feel for how to plan units. Plus, I can’t remember if I mentioned in the video, but we WATCH each act, then close read key scenes and passages... definitely not reading through the text aloud that quickly!
