Hi! As soon as I heard you are looking for recommendations for icelandic literature I jumped to the comment section - I have taken a master’s degree in nordic literature and could write you a whole book about why you should totally read icelandic lit, but I will try my best to keep it short 😂 I would like to recommend Jon Kalman Stefánsson first and foremost, especially his standalone novels (summerlight is my favourite, but also Ásta’s story and his latest novel are incredible - though I am not sure what the english titles are). He writes so poetically and his novels are usually character-driven and set in different timelines. I really can’t recommend him enough, and I think you would love anything written by him ❤️ other authors you might like are Gunnar Gunnarsson (The black cliffs is the work I loved the most by him, but if you want a good short story that contains a lot of snow and coffee read The Good Shepherd!); and lastly I can recommend Bergsveinn Birgisson and Halldór Laxness. If you need any more recommendations feel free to ask, I have a huge love for icelandic literature and have read a good deal of it! I think you will really like the lyrical quality of icelandic authors’ prose ❤️

The Good Shepherd is an amazingly beautiful, reflective Christmas read. One I reread every year.

@@apo1270 hi! If you are looking for something a bit more ‘spooky’, I would recommend some mystery/thrillers like The Flatey Enigma by Viktor Arnar Ingólfsson, DNA and Ashes to Dust by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir, the Dark Iceland series by Ragnar Jónasson or any crime novels by Arnaldur Indriðason 😊

Any Icelandic female authors to rec? :0
REBECCA! Read it for yourself. Knowing your tastes I think you would LOVE it and the writing style. It's one of my faves!
I read Rebecca last year and loved it. Du Maurier's writing is so transporting. You really feel like you are there experiencing everything for yourself.

I second this comment so much - rebecca is amazing!
I’m in the middle of Rebecca and would say it’s a great place to start since it’s her most famous work. Her writing is very flowery and to me, very visual and atmospheric which would probably make it a great audio book too. You’ll hopefully love it because I’m also loving it. It’s just slower moving and nuanced so not necessarily a quick read. I’d read it first before the hacienda though since that one takes a lot of inspiration from Rebecca.
Congrats on the final class for undergrad! 🎓“You GO EMMIE coco” 🥹And Rebecca sounds oh so good! Maybe this year you’ll catch Bly Manor or Hill House on Netflix! They are so good! 🕷Ooooooeeeeeooooo (spooky sound effect) 🥰🕸

thank you thank you!! if you do, let me know how they are, haven't finished either one!
For Icelandic authors I would highly highly recommend Jón Kalman Stefánsson! Especially "The Sorrow of Angels", which is the second book in a trilogy but can also be read as a standalone. It takes place in the Icelandic winter and the way he describes nature and environments is so hauntingly beautiful. Since you like winter and snow and ice I think you'd really enjoy it
I just finished Perfume by Süskind, and started reading Dracula this morning. I’m also just 50 pages away from finishing Shirley Jackson’s Come Along With Me which will be so bittersweet because I’ve been loving it. Once finished with that I’ll start on Junji Ito’s Frankenstein manga collection Happy spooky reading everyone!
Wuthering Heights is a Christmas read for me, too. It helps me balance all of the merry, festive, crazy celebrations with the darkness and cold of winter. I look forward to reading it again this December.
I‘m German- our language is not something we‘re viewing with pride even though it‘s objectively very beautiful, very nuanced and complicated… It‘s I guess a gift if you speak it without even considering how diffucult it is too learn for those not raised with the language as their mother tongue much love to you for trying to learn it so successfully- chapeau!!!

I would like to advocate for Rebecca, it is the PERFECT spooky season book. Very gothic, creepy, and haunting in the best way. It’s a look over your shoulder while reading kind of vibe, and it would probably be good either physical or on audio.
Happy Spooky Month! If I can recommend one add-on it'd be Rebecca! I think you'd adore Daphne du Maurier's writing and the story has such good spooky vibes! It's also set in a manor, and the architecture and building play a major character in the story. I genuinely think you'd love your experience with this book. Hope you enjoy your October reads!
Audur Ava Olafsdottir is an excellent icelandic author! I loved her books The Greenhouse and Hotel Silence
I definitely recommend you read Daphne Du Maurier! I would recommend starting with Rebecca since it’s her most well-known and feels more autumnal to me. That being said, I also highly recommend My Cousin Rachel. I read it this summer and was blown away by how good it was. It was the type of book that made me want to write an essay just to analyze the characters and theme. It’s very underrated, in my opinion!
This is such a cute outfit🥺🥺 cannot wait for all the october/fall content all over this channel and the entirety of booktube🕸🕷🥧🎃
You are my favorite booktuber by far and I love the month of October as Halloween is my favorite holiday. Honestly, I wish I could read more books but my ADD makes it tough though those books sound good. Btw that orange nail polish is nice on you and of course fitting for the month!
I got so excited when you mentioned because I had a course in High School on Icelandic literature and now I'm sitting here trying to remember all the books and novels and excerpts I read during that time 😬 Iceland is a country with beautiful and harsh nature and I am so fond of their literature as well because of its amazing use of nature in the writing. Andri Snær Magnason was the first one who popped up in my head (mainly because I once had a interview with him when I visited Iceland), I've read his book "The Blue Planet" which is basically a kids book but the message is good and I enjoyed it. I also have yet to read his book "Lovestar" but haven't gotten around to is yet even though it sounds reallly intruguing to me. I'd also recommend Jón Kalman Stefánsson (especially "Summer Light, and Then Comes the Night") and Einar Már Guðmundsson.
anyone who starts rebecca hoping for a romantic book ends up hating it, it makes me so sad lol! it shouldn't have that reputation. to me it's a gothic drama and.. well, you'll see. i half read and half listened to it on audiobook, it's great.
I will save this video for tomorrow morning, when I need a reason to get out of my bed. Your videos and tea are the best of reasons
I’m reading Rebecca right now and LOVING it!
Hi Emma. I have been watching your channel for years but I never actually commented on any videos… I wanted to tell you that you inspired me to start my own Book Club at my workplace and I named it Around the World Book Club. Like in your challenge we pick books from a different country every month. Our first meeting was today and the country for September was Norway. We read the Ice Palace, as my suggestion, also inspired by your review :) I wanted to leave this comment to let you know how much I enjoy your content and obviously how inspired I feel by it. Thank you ❤
Emmie I'm glad to announce that I'm finally going to read The Phantom of the Opera this October! I've been waiting for this month all year 🤭
Read Rebecca !!! It's my favourite classic
Nobody cares but yes I'm an introvert and I love reading books. Watching your videos makes me feel less sad and alone. I feel like we've been friends for such a long time . Thank you for accompanying me through the sad days of my life. Love you Emmie🥰
I love your suit look, Emma! I love spooky tales in October but I also for some reason like to read Native American tales in the Fall as well so I have a few of those going. Congrats on finishing your degree--what is next for you? Thanks for a great video and Happy Thanksgiving! 🙂
I liked Silence of Bones, it was an interesting look at historical Korea
Oh wow. The Secret Life of Laszlo. I haven't thought of that book in ages. My memories are, good narrative voice, possibly over long. That's all I've got.
Spooky season is my favorite!! I plan to read We have always lived in the castle, Frankenstein, and Rebecca hopefully soon!
the monk and zofloya are BONKERS, have such fun reading them
Hi Emma, I found Phantom of the Opera in a little library and picked it up saving it for October. I know it is one of your favs. Also just read Rebecca and loved it. It is mildly spooky I would say. Enjoy!
Liked it up, apparently it's a "wake" of vultures when they're eating, "kettle" when flying, and a "committee" when perched.
totally read that candle as "autumn bacon" and that just didn't feel right lmao love the new bedroom shelf set up it's so beautiful :')
🎃👻happy spooky reading emmie!
I just finished Rebecca today! Fantastic book that I highly recommend! But not necessarily for autumn though, didn’t get that fall spooky feeling from it. Just a wonderful read!
Ive read quite a few Du Maurier and she is amazing. Rebecca is my favorite book, I've read it so many times and for the last few years have made it my first read of the year. I hope that it brings you as much joy as I've found in it .
Rebecca is brillianttttt....I reread it almost every October
The Girl from the Other Side is sooo good!! It's the perfect dark fairytale. I would also recommend anything by Shirley Jackson, she truly is the absolute queen of spooky and dark writing!
Daphne du Maurier is amazing! My fav of those two is, My Cousin Rachel but very hard to choose. I went to visit the place she wrote Jamaica Inn, in Cornwall, UK. Love her. I'm sure you'll enjoy. I too love Angela Carter. 😍
I love your music choices in this video. They're perfect :) I have a stack of horror/supernatural books that I found on the shelves. I don't know how many I'll be able to get around to. So far, I've only finished one. LOL. As for what books to prioritize, I'd say The Monk, Zofloya, The Girl from the Other Side, and The Girl Who Ate Her Brothers and Other Stories. Maybe Rebecca too. That Dracula retelling does sound interesting, but I've never heard of it.
Alexander Dan Vilhjálmsson: "Shadows of the Short Days" and Guðrún Eva Mínervudóttír "The Creator" are my 2 absolute favorite Icelandic novels, both different from each other, both highly underrated and underread. I'll be curious to see what you choose because I love getting recommendations for Icelandic literature myself!
you look amazing and i love the vibes :]]
Iceland! 🥲 It’s also on my list and I can’t wait to see your videos! Sorry to hear about the anxiety and panic attacks, I also struggle with these, especially in this period. Take care, you are amazing and inspiring, beautiful!
I loved Mary's monsters.. but I personally found it very emotional and I cried ..I might just be a big baby lol... enjoy..love your vlogs..thank you for being you!
I’ve just started reading REBECCA and it’s so you! I think you will love it so much
for Icelandic I'd recommend Miss Iceland by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir (feels a bit like The Bell Jar but set in Iceland), or maybe sth by Halldor Laxness... I'm quite excited about your Iceland pick since I started learning the language this year as a German-speaker I also have to say, your German sounds very good!! :)
Omg i love "Monk:"! good luck with reading!:))
I'm finally buying myself Babbel, you inspired me to take my Swedish more seriously:)
I hope you have a fruitful and spooky reading month, Emma! About Daphne du Maurier, I highly recommend Rebecca. I think you'd love it and love du Maurier's writing style. As someone who's read and enjoyed Angela Carter's writing a lot, I think Daphne du Maurier does something so different with her writing - I'd not really compare them? Congrats for starting your final course/class for your degree. That's thrilling and it seems like a truly enjoyable course to end things with ☺️
Godsgrave is a SUMMER book trust me! It’s a colosseum/gladiator vibe and it’s ten thousand degrees during the whole book haha
I love The Girl From the Other Side!!
Your microphone sounds soo good! 🥺 Actually I have an idea, for your ASMR chanel it would be amazing if you could do a video with spooky/cozy vibes reading one of these books 🍂 please 🥺
You look so sassy, this style suits you the best! ❤
You look fabulous in this video, Emma! Love your tbr, specially "The Sister who ate her brothers". I've only read one author for Iceland; i've read a fantasy called The Casket of Time, by Andri Snaer Magnason and i loved it.
Hi Emmie! Thank you for the new video! Your uploads are a highlight for me. I saw today that a new book by one of your favourite people has just come out! You probably already know but just in case I thought I would mention it, especially as it sounds a little creepy. It's 'The Books of Jacob By Olga Tokarczuk; Translated by Jennifer Croft. Since you loved Tokarczuk's 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead' (as did I!) I thought I'd recommend this one, even though I haven't read it myself yet. I hope you enjoy!
so cool hearing you speak german! :D your pronunciation is really good!
Hey emmie it hope you doing great you are a good vlog emmie here to support you
Omg!! Rebecca is my favorite book I rly hope you get to it
Also any of the sagas & epic poems
I'm impressed of your pronunciation skills, especially for nailing the pronunciation of "László". 🤓💖
To Be Devoured was so good and gross. I loved it.
I know this is definitely not what this video is about but giiiirl! - Your Outfit, Hair and Nails make me scream.😍 You look amazing and now I want to copy this Look so bad. The Video also inspired me to start Dracula in this month (after two exams😮💨) as a reward, to cozy up and feel all the spooky vibes 🖤 Deutsche Grüße und viel Erfolg beim Lernen meiner Muttersprache 😄🇩🇪
Like many others, I would recommend Halldor Laxness particularly ‘Fish Can Sing’, which reflects on art and modernisation through the course of a Bildungsroman inflected with the fantastical, in a style that is probably best described as pastoral epic meeting modernity.
I am currently reading house of leaves and although i have barely read 20 pages, i find it engaging yet confusing. Can't wait to get to the end
New here and loving every bit of it!💙
Love your videos ❤️ Best wishes
I really enjoyed Mary's Monster. I definitely liked The Hacienda more than Mexican Gothic. I love The Girl From the Other Side series. My October TBR is three teetering stacks of books by my bed, several pending library book requests, plus a couple books I'm going to have to read on my Kindle. I'm doomed to fall short of reading everything but I'm enjoying the descent into chaos. Oh, speaking of being doomed, have you ever read The Deluxe Transitive Vampire: The Ultimate Handbook of Grammar for the Innocent, the Eager, and the Doomed? Yes, it's a grammar book. Also, it's awesome. You should probably have a copy of it.
Omg, please do a read-along on "wuthering heights" in december - that would be such a lovely way for me to finally read it😍
I’m not sure if you’ve already read White is for Witching but if you haven’t, I would definitely recommend it! Has sort of similar vibes as Untold Night & Day + Pedro Páramo…at least in the way where it’s difficult to fully grasp what is real and what isn’t. I reread it last week and can’t say enough good things.
I’m also currently reading Jane Eyre for school 😁 in a class about Austen and Brontë which is amazing - also highly recommend Rebecca, I read it a few years ago and absolutely loved it.
daphne du maurier is such a fun to read in autumn author!!! i would really recommend satarting with rebecca and if you love it move on to my cousin rachel! i'm doing victober this month, trying to squeeze in some spookines too
Rebecca is my favorite. The audiobook on Libby was phenomenal!!

The True Story of Laszlo, Count Dracula is what I am currently reading and it's pretty great so far.
Hey Emma, hope you see this but I was wondering if you could make a video on your favourite essays? I am very curious and don’t really know where to start with them so it’d be superinteresting if you have tips :) Love your channel, such a nice place to be :)
Could you make a video of you reading and timing exactly how long it takes you? I always wonder how long it takes other people to read a book
Hey Emma 💙 Thanks for the spooky books. You're awesome. P.s. found out that a group of vultures flying is a Kettle, a group on the ground, fence post, etc is a committee and, horrifically, a group of vultures eating the dead is known as a wake of vultures. So lovely.
omg i absolutly love your nails and your outfit, they’re soo pretty and on spot with the halloween-related tbr :)
If you see a group of vultures in flight it is a kettle, if they are just hanging around in a trea then it is a commity but if they are feasting then it is a wake.
October means I’m gonna be reading a lot of Agatha Christie and Stephen king!!!🤝🏼🎃☠️⚡️ very excited
everyday use by Alice Walker is amazing! Read it for my English class
I read Rebecca for my English degree and remember LOVING it makes me want to re read
I had similar feelings about Mexican Gothic, and I really enjoyed The Hacienda! It was more of what I was hoping for from MG. The Ex Hex is very much like a Halloween Hallmark movie, so it's just good to go in with that expectation. I thought it was fun!

The Monk is aaaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing!
Gunnar Gunnarsson's The Good Shepherd is a very winter-y Icelandic book that I loved (really reminded me of A Whole Life by Robert Seethaler which I think you would also like for the nature and winter vibes). Also, not Icelandic but if you don't have a book for Serbia yet I would recommend Dictionary of the Khazars by Milorad Pavic -- it's very weird but I'm currently reading it and really enjoying it.
look at calcifer trying to learn german. you go calcifer! also, congrats on your final undergrad class!!!
u will LOVE rebecca
i've been wanting to read jen campbell's stuff for a while now!! i'm excited to hear what you think about it :) all your spooky books sound so good, october is such a good reading month!
love the orange nails
Emma, I have a very long section of my tbr dedicated entirely to northern European mythic/semi-historical sagas. There are actually quite a lot from Iceland, and that might not be the kind of thing you'd be looking for but it is still basically the foundation of Icelandic literature. My understanding is that Snorri Sturluson (the writer/compiler of the Prose Edda) is more or less considered the GOAT in that sphere, but if it isn't strictly necessary that you read a specific Icelandic *author* for the around-the-world challenge, most of the really famous Icelandic sagas are anonymous. I was actually planning on reading Njal's Saga (a saga about a multi-generational blood feud between two families) myself last month, but school got in the way so I'm currently planning on reading it sometime before December. Anyways, hope that helps. Probably doesn't really but I hope it does.
the monk is one of my favourite books, the shock factor is lessened heaps if you view it as satire (my favorite way to read it)
Rebecca is also my October pick 😊
such a stunning video emma! i think october is perfect for the poppy war :)

ANYTIME IS A PERFREC TTIME FOR THE POPPY WAR
Your german sounds so cute! Keep up with it :)
ooh I recently bought a book from the bookstore that is Icelandic! it's called world light by halldór laxness! basically about a young foster boy who is determined to grow up and become a poet, and how drastically that affects his life
Rebecca's good. I remember liking it
I’ve heard from a lot of people that they didn’t like The Ex Hex, something that came out around the same time is Payback’s a Witch and I absolutely loved it!
I just love your new bookshelf!
Oooohhh you’re gonna read The Ex Hex yesss I loved it but I loved the sequel The Kiss Curse more 🙈 plus I think you’ll love Sir Purrcival heh 😅❤
Great list. Alot i havent heard of, so it'd be nice to look into some of them. If your interested in other titles, here are some you may or may not have heard. Recommend, Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindquist (novel) The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker (novella) Cabal by Clive Barker (novel) The Damnation Game by Clive Barker (novel/currently reading) N. By Stephen King (short story) The Boogeyman by Stephen King ( short story) Jerusalem's Lot by Stephen King (short story) October Country by Ray Bradbury (short story collection) Button, Button by Richard Matheson (short story) The Dunwich Horror by H. P. Lovecraft (short story) Remina by Junji Ito (manga) And as a bonus, id recommend the mini series 'Over the Garden Wall'. Perfect for the season. Happy reading.
I feel like any of Dostoevsky's novels are perfect to read in October. My personal recommendation would be his most political work 'Demons', 'Devils', or 'The Possessed'. It's hard to get into as the action doesn't kick in until like 200 pages but once you're in, you're in. Don't hesitate to check it out!
If you want to start at the beginning of Icelandic literature read The Sagas of Icelanders. Egil's Saga was my favorite. The Penguin Deluxe edition has maps.
"Blue fox" by Sjon is great iclandic book.
