:’) Aw! Thank you for the thank yous-altho I’m not sure I’ve done as much as to deserve such a lovely shoutout! Sorry I always go a little overboard…finding books which I know other people will love is just such a joy :) it is very much a literary treasure hunt, with the real treasure being all of these feelings and connections just like a shared love of words brings (idk cheesy but true)? Definitely down to chat in the comment section about books with anyone! PS: The Rilke Portal ([magical] trademark pending) is still most definitely openable, particularly on the letters in German front…

Hi Michael! Amazing books you gifted Emma👌🏼 Do you have any recommendations for Rilke’s beginners? I read letter to a young poet and became my favorite book, so I want to expand my live for Rilke!!! Where to start cus I’m a little lost🙏🏼

@@PaulinaReadsss Hi! :) I’m not sure I’m the best person to ask; there’s so much I still have to read! Maybe see Emma’s video on Rilke guidance? Her thoughts are definitely better than mine lol. I’ve really been enjoying going through his letters every now and then. He really seems at his best in showing his philosophies when in correspondence. And then of course his poetry aghhh literally the most essential words I have ever read, where the meanings are just so fundamental and soul-touching idk. Book of Hours and Book of Images are lovely, and you can’t go wrong with selections/collections of his poetry as intro. I haven’t read any of his prose yet oop I’ll need to get on that. For the big cycles, fun fact Juan Rulfo translated Duino Elegies into Spanish which is super cool (I think I have a PDF somewhere maybe)!

@@viir.lfc94 Yay! I uh kinda surpassed owning 3K books this summer (altho I’ve only read like 15% of them). Heavy emphasis on international literary fiction! I have a lot a lot of Julio Cortázar’s works translated into English (found one called Around the Day in Eighty Worlds which looks super cool)! One time I tried to have some list of my books by country, and it looks like from Argentina I have books by: Marcos Aguinis, César Aira, Agustina Bazterrica, Antonio Di Benedetto, Eduardo Berti, Borges, Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, Casares, Sergio Chejfec, Cortázar, Hernan Diaz, Mariana Enriquez, Federico Falco, Macedonia Fernández, Leonor Fini, Rodrigo Fresán, Sylvia Molloy, Andrés Neuman, Ocampo, Guillermo Saccomanno, Juan José Saer, Samanta Schweblin, and Juan Rodolfo Wilcock. Any advice on where to approach from next? :)

@@michaelchen6017 wow you have books from more Argentinian authors than me lol! Cortázar is just soooo cool! There's this "fight" that has existed for a very long time, which is: Borges or Cortázar? And I actually love both so much! (Also, Juan José Saer was born really close from where I live and his nephew is a friend of my family's! So cool. I also have read Cortázar's translations. Him and Borges were actually pretty good translators and, as a translator myself, I admire them as translators so so much! (Also, Cortázar's translations of Poe are famous here) Agustina Bazterrica is everywhere! I haven't read anything from her but I'm planning on reading her books in both languages. I know you mentioned a lot but Roberto Arlt is an amazing author, really heartbreaking and raw but oh so beautiful! (Also, would you maybe wanna share some other social media to talk a bit more in depth about books?)

So so so happy to hear the meeting with evie went well 😊 we have two crazy dogs and were nervous bringing home a kitten but had the same experience! She was fearless and the boys were more timid but they love each other now. She thinks she’s a dog and chases and plays with them. It’s wild but the dogs somehow know to be gentle with her? ❤ just a big spot of joy. Our kitty also loves outside time. She doesn’t go out at night but has free roam during the day. I know letting cats outside is controversial but she just loves it so much. Also I don’t know how we managed this but she doesn’t ever leave our yard so that has been a huge blessing. 🙌🏼 I bet calcifer+evie will be best friends by the time you get back.

you mentioned that calcifer struggled with the car journey - one of my cats had the same problem and cat sickness tablets work wonders. sometimes cats have motion sickness and you can have pills prescribed by a vet for them, i would definitely recommend this if he was salivating a lot on the journey, they're easily hidden in food. if it was just anxiety there's also medication for that, and also feliway (not sure if it has the same name in canada) is super helpful if you spray it on a blanket for them. hope this helps so that you and calcifer can travel more comfortably :)

Queneau is well loved in my corner. He gave us Zazie, and she has a very special place in my heart. He is phenomenal, and one of my favourite French authors to date. Timeless! You'll love him.. I think :) 'The Flight of Icarus' is a good one. I would say Queneau is at least slightly more than a quarter of Borges', or equivalent to 6.5 of Borges' limbs. Queneau is quintessentially French, peppered with a pinch of Borges here and there. Borges stands alone :) Happy reading!

Hi Emma, about Raymond Queneau (prononcer Keno ;), à la française) you should read his book "la disparition". I suggest to read it in french because the "thing" which disappear in this book (don't want to spoil) is so specific in french language that i really don't know how it is translated in another language. thanks for making such pleasant videos. have a nice travel ! love. Sylvette

Under your influence, Emma, I recently used my birthday gift card to buy a new and prettier copy of my favorite book, "Watership Down" because my old edition has lost both its covers, lol. Beautiful to look at books are extremely underrated--thanks for showing me that again! :-) Good luck with that last course and have a wonderful week! 🙂 P.S. With the ongoing affinity to small forest animals, the connections to Snow White are growing!

I remember studying "Exercices de style" by Raymond Queneau in school, which was fun, but I have never read a novel by him. "Zazie dans le métro" is maybe his best known title ? I would love to read more of his work for sure!

38:15 omg Flann O'Brien is a blast. He's an Irish author who dwells a lot in surrealism, and The Third Policeman is one of his most well known surrealist works, possible behind At Swim-two-birds, a personal favorite of mine. His books are just so fun because they have absolutely *zero* rules

My next read is the bloody chamber and I'm so excited to start. So thanks for your recommendations. 🥰

I was gonna say this too. I would honesty Google it before reading it because it was a huge scandal after Oprah featured it and the it came out that it was not really a non fiction. Might be a good book but don’t deceive your readers.
