Pitiful potholes | Carte Blanche | M-Net

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟯𝟬 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯.
Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast is one of the most pristine locations in South Africa. Home to a tourist favourite - the Hole in the Wall, also affectionately known as “izi Khaleni” or “the place of thunder” - it should be teeming with visitors. But few are brave enough to tackle the treacherous pothole-ridden 75-kilometre stretch of tarred road to get there. It’s just one example of the shocking state of many roads around the country; deep ditches and craters left unattended for so long, there’s often little trace of tar. It’s a symptom of the mismanagement and decline in service delivery plaguing municipalities across the country. Carte Blanche drives through three provinces in search of some of the country’s worst roads.

As a road building contractor I can tell you that the corruption at many levels remain the reason for these situations as we have people who can do it professionally but they are not given the work, as usual it is a crony based system which piles the cost up and the workmanship is terrible.

I live in the Emfuleni district. In my community, we raise money ourselves to fix potholes, we also fix our own street lights. We also have private citizens to remove refuse. Unfortunately we cannot remove our own sewerage. We even have private businesses who are fixing large burst pipes at their own cost because of the damage to roads and obviously the waste of clean water. These water leaks are left unattended for years. I'm not sure what we are paying rates and taxes for.

And this is why I'm forever thankful that I live in the Western Cape. We do not have to deal with roads like these. I worked in Gauteng in 2020. The surface of the R21 was literally disintegrating on the way to Kempton (at the Benoni off ramp). A stone hit my windscreen which cracked. I got the windscreen replaced. On the very same day I got the car back, on the very same spot another stone took the brand new windscreen. You just don't see stuff like this in the Western Cape. I live on a dirt road 7km from Ladybrand The fundamental problem is continuous, ongoing damage to the drain pipes caused by the road graders that are supposed to maintain our roads. I believe 100% of the drains that are supposed to take surface water under our roads and away are broken and blocked by the negligence and incompetence of the drivers of the grading machines. The road past my farm was resurfaced only 3 years ago, it is now worse than before the expensive work was carried out. The road is now almost impassable after heavy rainfall, when in the past it was always passable. Large dongas appear in the road and water no longer runs off the road. If the drains were maintained instead of being broken our road would be passable. If the new surface had contained more rock and less mud the road would not turn into a bog after every rainstorm. Quality work by competent contractors and road workers is all that is needed to keep the farm roads open. Is there no one in the whole country who can teach the drivers of the grading machines how to do their jobs properly?!!!

I live in the Eastern Cape and the roads are bad here too. And in town they are getting really bad in the area where I live and work. One of the factors in choosing what motorbike to get (can't ride a car) was the road conditions. I'm not much of a fan of road bikes to start off with. But with the way the roads are now, you need something with high clearance, big knobbly tyres and that you can see the road by your front tire, are a must. The high clearance to handle going in and out of potholes, Knobbly tyres to have better control with all the road gravel and been able to see up close the potholes to avoid them or weave between them. Heck some days it can feel like I'm taking a ride in the bush with all the potholes making things really bumpy and all the weaving to avoid them from time to time.

I would like to help. Potholes are caused by erosion. The viewers would have noticed that the roads were muddy and wet where the worst problems were found. There are many issues around why our roads are falling apart and we are aware of them all. I would like to focus on the things we can do about some of these issues. The three big one's (besides corruption) being: 1. Rain (water damage - erosion) For centuries roads are being built using the same methods viz. (a) Layering gravel to form a strong base (now includes tons of cement) and (b) using asphalt or various other methods for the top layer. This is an archaic method that might've worked in the past but we've never had traffic like this or such a huge amount of heavy (commercial) vehicles using our old and tired road network. Over time the base layer deteriorates and with heavy rains the actual "road foundation" starts to erode. This means that there is nothing to hold the top layer in place and Voila! A pothole is born! There is a technology that has taken over 16 years to perfect that was invented right here in South Africa that solves this problem. It involves using new tech to build the base that is 100% hydrophobic (waterproof). It also happens that using this new tech produces greater strengths than conventional methods. This effectively means The end of potholes!! The second big issue is the cost of road buidling/rehabilitation which leads me to the second point viz... 2. Cost (up to R9 million per km ) to build a municipal road This new tech drastically reduces costs because it does not require the importing of good gravel to build the base. Instead we use in situ materials (whatever is there already) and bind that. We also use NO CEMENT. Costs are reduced by 30% all the way up to 80%! We have done the excercise and can build a waterproof and stronger and longer lasting municipal road for around R3 million/km. 3. Potholes are expensive to repair (and repairs don't last) We have revolutionised pothole repairs using a special formula to bind the aggregate also making it waterproof and nearly indestructible. It is cheap and very easy to use. We have addressed the issue of water damage and can build roads at a fraction of the normal cost and at a fraction of the time traditional road building would take. We also possess a cheap and effective pothole repair solution that can be rolled out immediately. So why are aren't we using this technology? No really - I'm actually asking, cos we've been trying to get people to listen for years now.

The criminal anc don’t worry about roads as they fly all over the place. The coal trucks are also a major problem as there are tens of thousands on the roads going to Durban and Mozambique ports. Between coal trucks and potholes. I have nearly lost my life on our roads multiple times.

Africa wants to advance to the living standard of Western Europe, but people here often fail to understand that prosperity evolves around having (and respecting) standards, norms and rules, which is why rule-abiding countries like Germany are so highly successful. In South Africa many people think that rules are not to be taken too seriously. For example: if there was a rule saying that roads have to be inspected for indicators of damage every 6 months and if damage has been identified, it has to be immediately fixed, we wouldn't be in such a situation. A society that has no capacity to maintain what it builds is not sustainable.

As Layton put it 'we' need to hold the government to account'. This should be done at all levels from Municipal to Provincial to National. Until such time that we the people of South Africa stand up to them I'm afraid that nothing will change. I believe that if John Steenhuizen shows them what will happen for them when they vote for a competent party, with an excellent track record, the DA's support will grow hugely...

Try the road from Trompsberg to Philippolis and from Philippolis to Colesberg. A total of 120Km and will take between 2 and 2.6 hours if you drive carefully! Thanks Ace Magatshue for total incompetence and the follow up by your successors who do nothing! The road users should protest by not paying license fees for vehicles as that money is not being used to fix the roads. Corrupt and dishonest.
