The ANL RoRO container ship Allunga hove too off Pitcairn in 1974. We took onboard two male passengers en-route to NZ. They came out from the island in two timber built ship's long-boats rowed by women dressed in old-time clothing. Quite a sight.

Ever since a friend of my family told me about visiting Pitcairn in the early sixties, and showed me the turtle carved of native wood she brought back, I've been fascinated by this place. I'll probably never get a chance to visit, but my best wishes go to all inhabitants of one of the precious places of our world.

I would imagine it was a comms link. A few years ago a pregnant woman on Pitcairn was having difficulty giving birth. The only comms link Pitcarin had to the rest of the world was a short-wave Morse code radio. When they asked for help for the woman a station in Australia picked up the signal and happily a cruise liner was passing by a short distance away and when contacted by the Aussies through Inmarsat they altered course and dispatched a doctor and a nurse to the island. All ended well for mother and baby but it is amazing to think that in the twenty first century that a single Morse code radio was their only means of contacting the rest of the world. It looks like the Brits were finally shamed into providing a twenty first century comms solution to replace the nineteenth century one.

I don't think so. Pitcairn Island is a British Overseas Territory. The Island is administered through the British High Commissioner to New Zealand and Samoa. Based in NZ. He/she is the Governor of Pitcairn Island. Even back in the day. There was a radio - telephone/telegraph link via NZ Post telecoms, that could be used. No need to just broadcast out randomly in the hope - somebody would pick it up. And it is standard procedure to see if there are any nearby ships who can render assistance in an emergency. But aside from that. Any emergency radio traffic would also be picked up in French Polynesia. - And most likely, in Fiji as well. Also certainly by the emergency rescue co-ordination centre in Auckland. As part of the international agreements covering the region. Then we have civil aviation and shipping coms generally, and defence coms in NZ who also monitor the area.

In such a small community, most of the "exchanges" are based on absolute trust. For example, men travel from one island to the other (mostly for wood that they carve to sell to tourists) on long boats. Their lives might depends on one-another trust and solidarity.

The New Zealand Air force has air dropped supplies and equipment on Pitcairn Island at times. Including by Hercules aircraft, a bulldozer. And NZ P3 Orions have air dropped emergency medical and other supplies. As well as doing mail drops. Talk about "airmail". The MV Claymore is a NZ based supply vessel contracted by the British High Commission in NZ to do Pitcairn supply runs. And also runs to and from the Island, to French Polynesia. Plus other ships from NZ also go to the Island at times to deliver building materiels, equipment and contractors to assist with building and maintenance work. And yes, NZ Navy ships have visited Pitcairn Island. And helicopter equipped Navel ships would respond to any emergency or arrangement for assistance . But since the Pitcairn Islands are British Overseas Territories. They are administered by the British High Commission to NZ and Samoa. Not directly by NZ. The British High Commissioner, based in NZ, is the Governor of the Pitcairn Islands. That is how the Islands are administered.

With all the money that place has had they should have a concrete slipway and a air port for small aircraft. They should also plant trees for timber every year so in 20 years the island timber needs are meet .a small airport would open the place up and get tourists there every week and save lives .a small hart attack would kill you there .more contact with the out side world might help fix there social problems with the children being molested.
