The Nation of 38 People (& the Criminals who Founded It)

Ойын-сауық

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean lies a small island country known as the Pitcairn Islands. Although there are four of them, only the titular Pitcairn Island contains people; 38 of them, to be exact. Equally as strange as their current existence is the story of how they ended up there. In 1790, a mutiny on the HMS Bounty led to the first settlers finding their way to Pitcairn. The descendants of those settlers are still living there, after going through a slave uprising, decades of total isolation, and a horrific court case which tore the island apart. Now the Pitcairn Islanders are attempting to get people to move there... before their little territory becomes too small to save.

"Diddler Island" makes it sound a lot less appealing to me. Disclosure: the video just got to this part, about sexual assault trial.

Man, those times were wild. Kind of shame, that we live too late for geographic exploration, but too early for extraterrestrial exploration.

Ah yes, the Pitcairns. The territory that made the UK eligible to join the Pacific-centric CPTPP even though it represents almost no economic presence in the wider Pacific trade network.

Anyone remember the Cartoon Network show 'Mike, Lu, and Ogg' about a girl from New York who becomes an exchange student on an island? And all the natives have British accents and European names and adopt a few British customs despite still being stereotypically 'native'? And the reason they're like that is because the original inhabitants were Brits and Pirates who crashed landed there? And all the inhabitants are related to each other? Yeah, it seems the real life inspiration for that is a LOOOOT darker, huh?

Children require special entry clearance from NZ because of a "child welfare charter". Even still they say they encourage families with children to settle there, although the school closed in 2023 according to Wikipedia.
