Pit Bulls Unleashed: Should They Be Banned? - The Fifth Estate

It’s a fact that pit bulls, with their powerful jaws, can kill and maim. Google ‘pit bull attacks’ if you dare. But are pit bulls born bad or do humans make them that way? Therein lies an emotional - sometimes vicious - debate. On one side, traumatized families and public safety advocates. On the other, a powerful group of lobbyists who say pit bulls are the most misunderstood breed of dogs and are no more dangerous than any other pets.
Canada has a patchwork of laws and regulations - Ontario has a ban, Quebec is considering one. But pro-pit bull activists oppose any “breed-specific legislation.” In the United States, the lobby has even succeeded in getting many states to ban any pit bull bans.
Mark Kelley speaks to leading advocates for pit bulls, families of pit bull attack victims, shelter workers and doctors as he probes the sometimes disturbing debate over what to do about the pit bull.

Yes. The problem is that most people couldn't pass a high school statistics class to save their lives. Look, genius. If 20% of dogs are Pitbulls and those dogs are physically strong, then there will be a greater percentage of bites from Pitbulls (because there are more of them) and due to the strength of the dogs, those bits will inflect more damage. This is even worse when said dogs are overbred. You know what is ten times more likely to bite? A Chihuahua. But it isn't powerful enough to seriously injure you. Should Chihuahuas be banned? Oh and the woman that was watching a child in a home with two mixed-breed Pitbulls she had trained as guard dogs that were not accustomed to children? Are you kidding me? How was that not predictable? I feel empathy for her, but there was some magical thinking going on in that household.

Staffordshire bull terriers, Rottweilers and now American bully dogs account for most serious attacks. The RSPCA is calling to scrap breed specific legislation, even though it clearly works. we need to ban all fighting breeds and enforce that ban.

The craziest thing about that mauling is, I think the dog was actually just playing with me in it's own way. Had I been a child I would have been dead.

@@TraneYURdawg You know what's amazing about life in this universe, Bobby? Every single organism is united by a common goal, the most natural instinct of all: To propagate their genes and gene-sets similar to theirs as far as possible. Some do really well and end up colonising the entire planet, others not so much, and go extinct because whatever traits they have aren't fit for their own survival as a species or set of genes within a species. Pit nutters, with attitudes such as yours, lie in this second set of organisms. Hating people and valuing a completely different gene-set over that of a species the same as your own is not just evolutionarily maladaptive, it's evolutionarily suicidal. This issue is compounded in pit nutters by their adamant defence of a species that often mauls and kills members of their own, whilst providing no tangible benefits to the irresponsible owners over another breed of dog that would be less inclined to tear a person to pieces for no apparent reason. As far as the most iron law of life in the known universe goes, in the most empirical sense that humans can consider without calling upon deities; survival of the fittest, it is you that is worthless. Thankfully, when you/your children are mauled to death by your 'precious little angel who wouldn't hurt a fly', your maladaptive genes are simply being cleansed as a result of their own defectiveness; I cannot deny that this is good and natural. Nevertheless, if you could keep the maulings restricted to your own group and not impose your shitbulls on the rest of the population, I'm sure the rest of us would be grateful.

If people need to behave In just the right way around a breed, if children can’t grab their fur, babies can’t cry, if you can’t sneeze or cough, if everybody needs to adjust their behavior to be juuuust right around this dog to avoid being attacked, maybe that dog is the problem, and not the people. If a dog needs exactly the right perfect owners, the perfect balance of dominant and kind, the perfect equilibrium to train and raise the dog juuuuust right to avoid attack, provide the perfect environment every single day, 24 hours a day, maybe the dog isnt fit to be a pet, and not the human not fit to be owners. Put bulls are the only breed that apparently need absolute perfection to avoid violence. They need a perfect owner, perfect training, perfect environment, perfect behavior adjusted to their temperament at all times. Since, if you’re to believe pit bull lovers, attacks are never actually the pit bull’s fault. You have to look at ALL these other factors. No other breed requires this consideration. It’s a joke. Pit bulls are dangerous. That’s a fact. Stop making excuses. It’s pathetic.

That's so sad how just being a victim of a pitbull attack, will get you attacked by the pitbull advocates too. I have been attacked myself and I find that I can't even talk about it without most people getting defensive about pitbulls. It's truly bizarre.

My friend, this are extremists. And every extremist has extreme views. They deny that Pitt Bulls are a breed made to kill and fight. This are not sweet little scooby doo dog’s. This are fighting machines with 300 PSi bite force. Good luck if such a machine mauls your child. I love dogs and animals. But killing machines have to be put under special circumstances and not every one should be able to own them.

@@topacybits3576 All pits are pits. "gamebred" or not. Their sole purpose for existing was for bloodsport, and those genetics just don't magically go away because you want them to. Bringing up the bite force is nothing but misdirection straight out of the apologists handbook. It's the method of attack that's the problem. If they bit and let go, then you may have had a point. But they bite, hold, shake and don't let go (which incidentally is where the, now misused, "lock jaw" term came from. It was originally a term used by dogmen and it has nothing to do with the jaws locking and everything to do with them not letting go). So what if it's "only" 225psi. The bite force is moot at that point.

How can you be so selfish to say bs like that and deny the overwhelming evidence, knowing that she's putting so many people's lives (especially children) at risk by encouraging it. There's no excusing behaviour like that, it's so unjust that she's not held accountable for the number of deaths that are on her hands.

Can you believe there are pit owners here in N.C. that are fighting for the rights to get their 2 dogs back after they killed their neighbor?! A 7 year old girl & they seriously injured her mother! I signed the petition to have them euthanized already. This happened 4- 5 months ago & those dogs are still being cared for at the shelter. Those Pitts should've been euthanized the same day they killed that little girl! & the owners must be out of their minds to want the dogs back now.
