For all of you APBT fans forced to celebrate and support the blowhard, loud mouth, disrespectful, idiots who profess supreme knowledge of the Pit Bull, I present to you Mr. Richard F. Stratton. The man who has authored the books, that schooled, these loudmouth clowns.
Only Dogumentary TV is professional, respectful, and constructive enough to warrant an audience with a Pit Bull legend. Actually BBATV is the only channel not too busy trying to sell you dogs, puppy and stud fees, to make time to produce such an important Pit Bull video.
As you can see I take great pride in getting Mr. Stratton to sit down for an interview. I take greater pride in producing such an important dog video.
On a person note, after years of being disrespected and having my motives questioned its just great to stick it to the haters.
Check out Mr. Stratton on his new website www.strattonpitbull.com

Prasad Lohokare absolutely agreed. I love pits and wouldn’t really consider having anything else but I don’t recommend them for the average casual dog owner. Same would go for a rottie, a German Shepard, a Doberman... any of the strong breads. Although I could say that Pitties have noticeably less human aggression then the dogs I just mentioned, but you do have to be careful with them around other animals.

Exactly the same goes for Bull terriers. Same danger to other animals. In all honesty what sets them apart is the documented fact ( statistics) that many varieties of pit bulls lines nowdays do have a predisposition towards human aggression that Bull terriers don’t, generally speaking.

In fact, not really. The tragedy was being brought to mainstream because the fighting aspect was there since day one, that was the whole reason why they created and improved over the years that fighting instinct that they disguise under the word “ gameness”. The ppl who created them did so to fight them. Whoever tells you different is full of shit. If you read between the lines this interview, this guy (which is one of the ones that pit bull dog enthusiasts look up to) was all about that.

It's people who have no idea and breed the dog for looks rather than gameness. I raised the dogs for many years and have managed to keep a few! I had people come from all over to get my pups in the 80s and 90s! I started out with some Boudreau and Carver dogs and have been fooling around with the Jeep and RedBoy mixed with some Hyde's Bloody Sunday and Grand champion Art and Davis's Midnight Cowboy! Really good mouth and no stop at all. They were dead game! But I really had some that were smart as a whip!!! Never ever produced a man biter!!!

I've never had a purebred pitbull terrier but I'm on my 3rd pit mix and I can say without a doubt they've been the best dogs I've ever had. They've been SO loving, loyal and protective on the rare occasion when it was necessary. They're definitely not a dog for a timid "hands off" owner who isn't willing and/or able to train them and be consistent but if you can provide them with the proper training and the means to burn off their seemingly endless amount of energy, you honestly couldn't ask for better dogs. We've been very cautious about introducing them to other animals because we know they unfortunately are predisposed to animal aggression but the one we have currently is best friends with our yorkshire terrier and 2 cats. We've always been cautious with her around them because she's so much bigger than they are(50 lbs) but other than being concerned she may hurt them from playing too rough since they're so much smaller, we've never been worried about her being around them. She's hands down the sweetest of all our pets and she even gets along well with the dogs of our friends and family when they bring them over. I hate how all "pit bull" type breeds have such a bad rap.

AWESOME VIDEO MR STRATTON 👍 I purchased my first ADBA papered pure red back in 1985 and like you said, nobody had a clue what type of dog it was . They would just comment at how beautiful she truly was .. I purchased your book shortly after and learned all that I could . After learning the history I then would tell people that it was an American Staff Terrier as to not frighten them should they be familiar with the breed . That dog was with me for 12 years and died in my arms of natural causes . She was raised around my infant daughter and many other children and I can’t say enough wonderful things about her . I have always been extremely responsible and for that reason I’ve never had a single incident of my dogs harming another dog or biting a human . When my daughter was 2-3 we were out back playing and a large Doberman was charging across the field towards us . I couldn’t reach my daughter quick enough , but the dog was at the sliding glass doors two feet away . I opened that door and that female red took off like a gunshot straight at that Doberman . She hit that dog head on like a ram and turned that dog the other direction . She chased it away nipping at its mane and once out of sight she came straight back to us . She didn’t hurt that dog too badly other than it’s pride . She never had a fight in her life, but as you said her gameness was already bred into her . She just naturally reacted to what she saw as danger to her Master and human sister . Thank you for all of you have done and the research put into your work . I’ve been an owner for 32 years now and have spent most of that time trying to educate the public . Unfortunately where I live there are far too many irresponsible bully breed owners . However we will continue to try and shine a positive light on one of the most loyal, athletic and wonderful family dogs in the world . Peace my brother 👍✌️

I am a dog lover. I watched this entire presentation. It has always been my perspective that responsibility belongs to the dog owner. If you own a chihuahua, your responsibility to keep others safe from harm is relatively small. If you own an American Pit Bull, your responsibility is huge. The breed was specifically bred to be game, to never give up in a fight. They were also bred for better strength and survivability in a fight. These traits were perfected through fighting them to show off who had the most game dog. Mr. Strtatton makes it clear that the responsible pit bull owner must keep the dog on a leash at all times and never allow it to attack another animal. My son's pit bull mix needed to be sequestered in the basement because she was determined to show off how game she was by attacking one of my dogs whenever they were together. Keeping her bound to a person or object in the house at all times would not have been fair to her, so she had her own portion of the house. A game pit bull is tenacious and does not know the word quit. Many pit bull owners simply do not possess the hyper vigilance required to be fully responsible for a game dog. Frankly, a game pit bull with all its power is an inherently dangerous animal in the typical pet environment.

Too hairy. Way too loud. Pits are a really perfect size, tough as hell and short hair. They're pretty easy to clean. And they're known as nanny dogs means they're great w your family's kids. Look up nanny dogs.

I could listen Mr. Stratton stories all day long. He reminds of another great dogman Louis B. Colby who I was luck to become friends with and lived only a half hour away from me. I still stop by from time to time to see his dogs but it’s not the same without Lou. The late Louis B. Colby was probably the friendliest dogman I was lucky to meet. He would show us around his yard tell us who each dog was off of and then would take us in his barn where he kept all his pups. Then off to the right he had quite a few gamecocks, but the best was when he would invite us into his home and we would talk dogs for hours and the stories he had about growing up with these great dogs and the people who would come there, it was such a pleasure listening to his stories and I’ll never forget the famous door he had in his barn but that’s a whole story in itself. I offered to buy it but he just laughed and continued on. R.I.P. Richard F. Stratton 6/24/2008 & R.I.P. Louis B. Colby 7/10/2011 “Both legends of the A.P.B.T.”

I hope that this video goes viral. There are a lot of people that desperately need to watch this and actually learn something about the AmPit Bull breed. Too much lack of education, misinformation, and just plain stupidity. Thanks Dogumentary TV for letting people know the truth of this incredible breed of dog. I wanted to talk about his definition of gameness though, because I feel that it could confuse people and give them the wrong idea. I know that is this individual's definition, and that he is referring to a specific use for gameness, but that is not all that gameness is. Gameness is the trait of having the intense desire to accept any challenge and to succeed at a task. Basically, it means the trait of not giving up. In a fight, gameness would be not giving up or losing interest in a fight, but gameness really means a dog that never gives up and always tries. Even if a game dog cannot do something, the dog will still try and try long after a normal dog would have just quit. If people talk about only one aspect of gameness, it might get people thinking that only fighting is the way to test, show, and breed for gameness. That is not true. Even before fighting, gameness was a thing, and the AmPit Bull was game long before it started being used to fight against other dogs. This guy practically said that in this video when he talked about how they have been used for hog hunting and catching bulls. Because if it is true that the AmPit Bull is the original Bulldog, then that would mean that they were game tested in things like farm work and hunting large, wild animals as well as things like bull baiting long before dog fighting. There are sports like tug-of-war and weight pulling. Yes, things like weight pulling are game tests also.

+Sneakypi You're welcome. Glad you better understand. I'm glad it is not only something to do with dog fighting as well. It would be ashame if gameness could only be tested and produced through something that is mostly illegal and seen as morally conflicting. But no, gameness is something that can be tested and produced in different things that are legal and seen as good and/or useful. Things like hunting and dog sports like tug of war.

THANK YOU!!! I'm 57 yrs old, and back in 1984, I bought the last and BEST American Pit Bull Terrier I ever owned as a pup just weaned. The seller owned both of the parent dogs, and they BOTH were UKC registered & were descendants STRAIGHT out of the Colby farm/bloodline. The seller set me down at his kitchen table & opened one of Stratton's books & invited me to trace the names of some registered dogs mentioned in the book and then compare the papers of both parent dogs to the pup I was about to buy. THERE WERE SEVERAL ANCESTORS IN THOSE PAPERS, MENTIONED IN THE BOOK FROM THE COLBY FARM!!! I was blown away. I don't even know if you can get a true Colby pit bull anymore, but I sure had one. I also later on owned Mr. Stratton's first book shown in this video. IT'S ABOUT TIME SOMEONE POSTED A VIDEO OF TRUTH. I didn't even know Richard Stratton was still alive. And I can't wait to shove this video ( and the historical facts it contains) down the throats of a bunch of punks who don't know crap about the TRUE American Pit Bull Terrier.......but only THINK they do.

Maaaan a Colby dog??? Nice.... haven't seen a true Colby dog in person to this day, and man thats awesome u got to be around them. And yes punks have ruined this breed. Blame the media too.... i see stuff on TV the media tells the public. How dog fighters let their APBT kill dogs and use them as "bait" dogs, starve them, make them vicious so they can be better fighters. Now u got idiots doing stuff like that thinking its cool. Now im not saying i agree with dog fighting, but as a fan of the APBT i have read about dog fighting, and dog man like Don Mayfield and Maurice Carver. No dog fighter wanted their dog to fight poodles or chihuahas because that woudl teach them bad habits. How would letting ur APBT kill little dogs make it fight better against another APBT??? APBT were known for endurance so how would starving ur dog help it. How would a dog that was some psycho agressive mindless kill be able to be around trainers, handlers ect??? Makes no sense at all. Now people like make their APBT mean, thinking is cool to be agressive, and its not. Id rather have a APBT that is great around people and not have to worry about it around friends and family. Or if by some accident it gets loose (it happens no matter what dog breed u have) and not have to worry about a law suit.

@@209Richsta Thanks for the kind words. I never mentioned the colors & how beautiful Dino was. He was a dark chocolate brindle with gold tiger stripes on white.......meaning he had a perfect brindle "burglar's mask" with a white muzzle & black nose, ears & head were brindle, along with a brindle "cape" that covered his entire back, neck, shoulders, rump, sides & all 4 legs most of the way down. The underneath side of his lower jaw, neck and entire belly was snow white, plus all 4 feet up about 5 inches each looked just like he stepped in a tub full of white paint & then stepped back out. The white was the exact same "height" above each foot. The tip of his tail going up 4 inches was snow white too. Man, he was drop dead gorgeous standing on a green lawn. Wish I had a dollar, for everyone that commented on how beautiful he was. I forgot to mention my 2 older step sons as well, ages 9 and 6 when my oldest son was born, and them and all their friends, basically every kid in the neighborhood, would run all over the place with Dino with them. Looked like a scene straight out of the little rascals. There wasn't a single parent or any adult for that matter, who took issue with our dog, they all liked him. Never had an issue with him about aggression. See my other comment below if ya haven't already, about some of the cool & funny things he used to do.

***** You have to know your dog. There are Pit Bulls that are taken to and do well at dog parks. Though this is not the type of dog that, if you had to generalize, would do well in a place like a dog park, there are those that do well at them. I'm not saying people should go out and just take their Pit Bulls to the dog park. Just know your dog. If they do not generally get along with other dogs, then they probably would not do well at a dog park. If people aren't sure, they could always test it out by taking their dog with a muzzle on and seeing if their dog tries to go after or get into a fight with other dogs.

Muzzles are so underused in this Country and the stigma against them needs to go away. They can be a wonderful thing for a dog. But as a rule, Pits shouldn't be at the damn dog park. And I don't think it's a matter of knowing the dog. They can go from 0 to 100 with no warning, for no reason. It's mostly a matter of 'when'.

  • @GO-GO_SO-SO

    @GO-GO_SO-SO

karunald Not exactly. Like the guy in this video says, not all will fight and there are some that get along well with other dogs. For the most part, supervision is the key. It is not irresponsible for a person, especially someone that knows their dog, to have their Pit Bull around other animals when supervised. It is irresponsible, however, to leave them around other animals unsupervised. Because it is not really about when it happens, it's if. Even if a Pit Bull is good around other animals, if another dog or something attacks them or starts a fight with them, it will usually not end like it would end with other dogs. The Pit Bull does not give up and sees a task through to the end. That is its resilience/determination or gameness. They might not start it, but they will make sure it is finished one way or the other. Usually this would mean bad injury or death to one, the other, or both dogs.

Richard is a walking talking book of knowledge on bulldogs and a all round nice person that’s committed his life too the apbt and to bring factual information about the breed. I was hoping he’d talk about people breeding bulldogs with patterdales. 😂

adding this to my faves Sir. Trying to keep my Corso exclusive here in the UK I cannot agree more with the gent in the video of the welfare of the dog v a fashion accessory. Any idiot asks me what my dogs are I resort to tell them they are crossed. I would have a pitt in a heartbeat if it was not for the discrimination and the ban here. Even Corso is not recognised here, which maybe good for the breed. I payed top dollar for my lines and it pisses me off people selling them on craigslist/gumtree for a fraction of the price. Unsuspecting owners then realise their mistake when the dogs fall apart. I 💯 agree, breeds need a great owner. More vetting needs to take place to insure responsible owners and go to hell the owners who dilute lines for a cheap buck. God Bless

Your books have been legendary Mr.Stratton!!!!! "This is The American Pit Bull Terrier" was classic. I got my hands on it in 2006-2007 and it changed my entire outlook on the breed. My hat is off to you, without you this breed wouldn't be in existence!!!!!! The American Pit Bull Terrier (A.P.B.T.) Purify our breed!!!!! Thank you sooo much!!!!! You are keeping farms and kennels alive with your Pure breeds and you have a strong following in Appalachia and Eastern Ohio!!!!!! One Love
