    @@bradmyllymaki4991 Don Mayfield was in the business for nearly 50 years. He did a ton of research about dog health, biology, performance and husbandry. That combined with the knowledge he gained from Earl Tudor another 50 years with gamedogs and the knowledge Earl gained from his mentors going back to the late 1800s. So it may be an underestimation as to the number of years that Don possessed and passed along. I can almost guarantee that you won't find a man with more knowledge in conditioning, fighting and breeding gamedogs, than the late Don Mayfield...RIP!

    I was at Don's twice in 1981. He had his big spinning mill and the dog hut built up off the ground that he watched as he worked Tombstone etc. in. I bought his old magazines while I was there and talked dogs with Don. He had a pit up against his house on the right side as you looked up hill. He was a busy guy but a gentlemman.

    This is so great, I can listen to him for hours because of his voice alone....Only wish he would have shared his feeding routine and what he used, and that I could find more of these videos. We should really take a moment to acknowledge however that this video was made in a whole different era.... It wasn't normal to film stuff back like it is today. He took it upon himself, by himself, to do this....and I can imagine what that would've taken, it's not like he was raised in the technology world

    God only knows how many hours I have sat listening to you don Mayfield I wish you knew just how much respect real dogmen give you ... I have watched all the videos I can get hold of! And I watch his videos over and over agian to go to sleep with, this one particular this video, Don's story telling reminds me of my old granny god rest her soul telling me all them good old stories, I would give any amount of money just to go back and hear her tell them old storries once agian! So I understand what he means on a personal level, when he says you just want to grab that moment and rewind it go back ask what did you mean when you said this, or that, how do you do this or that, things I took for granted when she was hear he hit the nail on the head when he said the question you ask when your young are not the same as when you are actually old enough to understand what it is your asking I'm paraphrasing a true old fashioned man, just where as the old people gone are we alone in this fucked up technology era or is there still people like this, like me I'm only 33 born in 87, should of been born in 57, and was raised more or less by my old granny so I am old fashioned if I do say so myself and R.I.P the great mr don Mayfield

    @Joseph Gribble better off with a cross breed that's specifically bred for hoggs then.. A game bred dogs more likely 2 kill your other dogs when u let it loose then 2 go for the pig

  • @mikefrost8815

    @mikefrost8815

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Joseph Gribble I personally use crosses. I breed APBT myself and I've tried hunting with them they just wouldn't stay focused and always wanted the other dogs. If you can get a calm & smart APBT that has no interest in starting fights with the others then that could work. Just doesn't happen often lol. Dogo's are perfect for hoggs , Bully crosses or an APBT mix.. I just don't use pure APBT anymore.. Unless im just going out for coyotes and only need 1 dog.

  • @mikefrost8815

    @mikefrost8815

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Joseph Gribble no problem.. To be clear though thats just MY opinion.. I do know folks who have used APBT with no issues.. The ones i personally breed myself though just won't work out for that.. And I can't recommend using ANY gamebred APBT for a pack sport just for safety of the rest of the dogs.. Am.Staff could be the way to go.. Same thing as APBT just without the dog aggression

    I've been doing it old-school same way my grandpa did hand walking and so on old school raised people know the usual routine their family goes through I will give one secret and I suggest it to anyone as far as feed out grandpa started with beef,deer,and really any kind of liver but I have started using buffalo liver it's the best in my opinion so far I will not tolerate human aggressive show dogs only one I have I trained and nurtured aggression in him but he is not a show dog however I kinda regret it because he's the baddest brindle on the yard better than anything we have record of in the books kept since Staffordshire england I have a cat Mill that my uncle built he learned about it from mr.carver but in the 80's my grandpa took all trust and ownership from my dad, and uncles when they started drugging and the cat mill has not been used since when I was born I was always on the yard up my grandpa's ass so he showed me the old ways and the standards at which he held our dogs he was one of the few that was winning in the shows against the drugged dogs it's to the point now where I very rarely go more than 20 miles from the house and most of the time it'll be a couple of dogs and we will step off in the woods and see who's got the better dog now understand it's not like your weekend warrior with a 12 pack in him this is big time old rivalries and word spreading I have matched breeders from all around the world rivalries that date back to grandpa the oldest is 1942 and I never match for less than $25,000 because it cost now with inflation $2,500 to put my dog through a keep and grandpa set the rule we always put up 10x what the keep cost the most I have matched for and won was $300,000 I matched for $500,000 and lost three months before that grandpa matched an individual from the ukraine in 1999 for 1.2 million and won at that time he was 86 years old and wouldn't let me handle the three year old bitch bula mae off of our triple grand champion sire won 18 and lost an upper canine in that fight and had to retire at six and double grand champion dame who won 11 her last fight she was 5 and faught the last 38 minutes with broke leg and last 15 on her back she was ruined for showing so she was retired to breeding and bula mae was off the sires last litter and the match lasted approximately 23 minutes and 45 seconds I know for a fact because it's a yard rule we time every match for the books I gotta go feed out you showmen out there stay safe and remember most of these new weekend warriors out there gets there feelings hurt when they get beat because they don't realize you can't take a watered down bloodline and expect it to perform the way it did when it was created to many sht eaters crossed into and then line breeding to try and get it close to original and of course inbreeding is rampant among the ignorant I have no issue with line breeding if you know what you're doing but they don't realize there's a limit

    American Pit Bulls have got to be one of the hardiest, most versatile, and capable breeds out there. They were bred as all-around farm dogs for cattle and to hunt. Like it says at the dog breed info website..and I quote.."the American Pit Bull was bred as an all-around farm dog, working the farms as a cattle/hog dog." I don't know how I feel about pitfighting though. I mean I can see why people use and breed American Pit Bulls to be able to and excel at these things. Bullfighting, bear baiting, ratting, badger baiting, and then dogfighting may seem off the mark on what the American Pit Bull was bred to do..but it's actually not. The American Pit Bull is a catch dog for livestock and wild pigs. Though it is called farm work and hunting..what they are basically doing is fighting against another animal. Those pitfighting matches are a more measured and more competitive way of insuring the standards of this hardy working breed get upheld and that people continue to breed for standard, the most capable, and the most game. But these pitfighting matches are illegal in some places, even in places where they are very popular like in America. I say to breed American Pit Bulls for purposes like hunting big game like wild pigs, deer, and bears and even smaller yet also very feisty game like raccoons, badgers, etc and breed for the best of those dogs if pitfighting is illegal a particular area. Hunting is a completely legit and legal activity that is what the American Pit Bull is all about (prey drive, power, athletic ability, the ability to hold onto another animal and not let go, etc.). It's not worth risking these great dogs to use them in an illegal activity that can get them taken, the owner arrested, and the dogs put down. People..if you breed American Pit Bulls or own American Pit Bulls and are looking for things to test them and breed the best for..then breed them for hunting game (big and/or small), weight pulling, and springpole. Great ways to use dogs for activities and make sure they are standard and breed quality. And those purposes are LEGAL. It's much, MUCH better than just breeding them based on looks and what you see on the end of a chain because you don't take part in illegal activities.

    the thing is the dogs are bred for that ..

  • @Mister_Cool

    @Mister_Cool

    8 жыл бұрын

    +hay imfine Not exactly. They were originally bred as farm/catch dogs for controlling out-of-control livestock and catching big game like wild pigs. In fact..before dogfighting..people had other pit-fighting matches that breeders used to test the capabilities and gameness of their dogs for breeding purposes. Bullfighting, bear baiting, and stuff like this.. youtubeonrepeat.com/watch/?v=M_CnN28e8zs They used the animals the dogs were bred to grab, catch, control, and/or kill. Technically they are bred to fight against another animal..but they are not exactly bred to fight against each other. But since they were bred to fight against big, strong, and/or formidable animals..it was not too far a stretch to use them for fighting against each other..gamedog vs. gamedog. Dogfighting started after things like bullfighting and bear baiting became illegal and people had to use other pit-fighting sports to test their dogs for breeding stock that was easier to hind. Sports like badger baiting, ratting, and dogfighting was started. And while other pit-fighting sports involving larger animals still take place..sports like dogfighting still go on too.

    Mike Chance ok fair point but if some one who breeds dogs and conditions them to fight other dogs don't you think he will breed them to the characteristics of a good fighting dog ( sorry for my english)

  • @Mister_Cool

    @Mister_Cool

    8 жыл бұрын

    hay imfine Yes..definitely. That is sound logic. However..thankfully..those characteristics really don't stray from what the breed is about. What makes a good fighting dog and what do dogfighters look and breed for in the American Pit Bull? Power, a hard bite, holding ability to hold onto an opponent, endurance, durability, drive, determination, courage, unyielding spirit, good temperaments (towards humans), readiness for a challenge, high prey drive/animal aggression, etc. These are the things that make the breed what it is. The same properties that make them good catch dogs, farm dogs, and athletes for a variety of sports and activities are the same things that make them great fighters. And even better..an American Pit Bull bred from lines of pit-fighting does not have to be a fighting dog..especially if it is raised and trained to do something else. Many American Pit Bulls coming from lines associated with dogfighting are bought and used for other things..even as family pets. With those many great qualities bred into them and no training/conditioning for fighting..the dog is just a great all-around dog ready and able to do pretty much whatever it's trained or raised to do.

    Mr. Cool Technically, their ancestor the "BullandTerrier" was bred for Bull baiting and whatnot but once you breed a dog for a different purpose, it changes the breed completely which makes it something new. Look at the history of the Dogo Argentino, for example. The Córdoba Fighting Dog(as the name shows) was a fighting dog but now we have the modern day Dogo Argentino(a catch dog breed).

    One important factor was the last feedings being at 28 to 30 hours the last three rest days. In James Crenshaw's Book he mentioned of being at the show site thirty hours prior. Dog would be totally cleaned out right before weigh in. The Pre Def 2X was far superior to the steroid mentioned here by Don. Baker Davis and combine learn that from their local veterinarian.

    Dog fighting has gone on for centuries. In every part of the world. These dogs were prominent in Ireland and remote parts of England going back to the 15th century. So it was perfectly normal in those times. Sure it is outlawed in the US and many other countries but is still a way of life many other places still to this day. My point is, dogs have had so many purposes over hundreds of years and these dogs have deeper roots than just fighting. They can be great working dogs, great sport dogs, and certainly great pets.
