I live in palmer alaska and always wonder what our crazy neighbors are up too. I have always looked down on Russian cars but when the government pretty much builds your cars you shouldn't expect greatness. I hope one day our nations will be back on good terms our world is so much better united then fighting with one another.🇺🇸🙏

The fact that it started back up and drove into the shop with holes in the pistons in pretty impressive.
i did this to my Vespa piston...i had bad pre ignition timing issues and the plug burned a hole through the crown so i used JB Weld on it and sure enough it ran, but within minutes the hole burned right through again

Lol I once drove 30 km from home with a buddy as passenger. I got a loud pop and I noticed throttle response was lower and I needed to keep it alive. It brought us home, died in front of the door. And I found out later a piece of piston 'has left the room' size 5x5 mm on the top outside of a small 70cc 2 stroke piston... lmfao. It brought us home 👍

Drilling the hole up to a standard tap size and putting a bolt in it would certainly be interesting. Should last much longer than filling the hole with adhesives. Still going to need some form of adhesive as thread-locker to prevent the bolt from backing out and to seal the threads though. The first cylinder to fail was almost certainly the baking soda. I was expecting the other two to fail within seconds at load, looks like they lasted a whole lot longer.

Back in the eighties, I burned a hole in the crown of my Vespa's piston. So on the roadside I removed the cylinder and piston then I used Araldite to fix a 2 pence piece to the underside of the crown, waited for it to cure and then filled and smoothed the hole atop the crown with more Araldite, put it all back together and I got several hundred miles out of the blessed thing until the glue gave out on the 2p and the 2p coin dropped into the crank and smashed everything up inside.

When I was about 10 I had used JB weld to glue a nickel to the cement floor of our basement. My dad tried to pick it up and failed (obviously 😆) so he got a hammer and chisel to remove it, but the JB weld didn't let go, the nickel took up a chunk of cement when it was pried off 😆 and from then on I knew it was seriously tough stuff.

I know at least the super glue will release with heat for sure. I use it to hold small 2 stroke cylinder jugs onto a mandrel to cut the bases a few thousandths to raise compression on chainsaws. Just a small amount of heat that jug slips right off. JB Weld I've had mixed results with heat on different things. EDIT: I really did think they'd come apart a few seconds after startup. Lasted way longer than I thought. Lol

Try using JBWeld Extreme to glue a coin to patch over the hole. Coins are tough. Obviously it depends on valve clearance. You might even get a performance boost from the increased compression LOL.
"What we saw upset us and we decided to go home" man I feel that bahahhahah
At 2:45 I saw your stunt doubles go through the back door.
So some context, the piston head experiences the peak highest pressure of 2100psi on every single stroke, it also experinces the most amount of heat being the closest to the explosion in order to do it's job. So while it failed to repair a piston head, the block itself would be fine with JB weld, having experienced a fraction of the heat and concussive peak pressure that the piston takes. As the piston travels down and expanse the pressure rapidly drops meaning the walls of the cylinder would be able to handle the jb just fine.
Lol it’s setting off car alarms … the cars parked are like “stay away you sick bastard!” Hahahah
Wow, Garage 54 is following in GM's footsteps in successfully duplicating the 1.5L Ecotec engine.
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
From 11:00 your lada started sounding like a lawn mower 🤣
JB Weld probably survived the longest of all three glues.
Do a homemade spark plug episode that would be very entertaining
You have good welder ;) that's why TIG welding resisted! Could be interesting to do the same test with different technologies of welding (MMA, TIG, etc...)
You can mix the jb weld with steel shavings and it’ll hold.
I was half expecting the JB weld to survive if I'm honest, based off my own experience. Although I won't say I'm TOO surprised it failed
I like how the old dude just jumps in the video LOL!!
Predictions: The cyanoacrylate "super glue" will prove too brittle, shattering in service. The epoxy will get gummy with heat and peel out. I have used JB Weld and it has proven very fit for the purposes I put it to, but those purposes have not included using it in a combustion chamber. I think, on zero evidence, that it'll work for a little while before it fails. I expect the welded piston will still be working well after the other three have failed.
You guys are awesome lol
Tig weld the other 3 and test to see if how close to factory compression you could get by fixing it that way
Gotta love those ideum. Yeahm.
I wonder what would happen if you jb welded a piece of aluminum to cover hole might deflect some heat and hold up longer?
Yes
One adhesive you can try is 2 part putty. It has metal filings in it & it withstands high temperatures.
@soldjahboy

@@soldjahboy not the putty I’m talking about. JB weld is liquid form. The stuff I am talking about isn’t. @@soldjahboy the JB weld they used in this video is in 2 part epoxy liquid form. The stuff I described is what I used to fix radiators & steel fuel tanks. This was an interesting experiment! Try the nut and bolt idea, with a countersunk head. What could go wrong?!
Poor old Lada but I imagine one in good condition is pretty reliable. Russian machines tend to be simple but very robust. So a piston can be repaired by welding.

@@SwapBlogRU you guys are the only ones who could make it work. My thinking is, cnc machined for perfect seal joined surfaces, two piece L shaped ' rings ', slide them in and carefully weld them together in place on the piston. Make high compression pistons by putting a button head Allen screw in the top of each piston will it work?
What happens when you put the spark plug in the piston?
I do a bit of work on geo trackers and they're known for developing cracks in their aluminum blocks between the cylinder sleeves. A girl thought she had a blown head gasket but when I pulled the head I found cracks between 1&2 and 3&4. My initial thought was pull it and replaced it but i've had so much luck with jb weld and we had nothing to lose so I patched it with jb weld and put it back together. That was a year ago and she's still running it.

Pull all 4 of the rods and pistons out and see how far you can drive on just the starter motor. electric car ! Try it on one battery, then try it with a bunch of batteries.
another suggestion? how to fix? buy a new piston, they are cheap to buy, compared to all the work welding up and machine it to fit again But ok, it was a nice experiment. Why? JB weld is good ok, but if used, take care, and maybe only for non stressed erea's or parts. It has been used for altering inletports of modified cylinderheads, but even this is not as good as welding up the ports wich i did.

Jb weld isn't good with heat. We tried to quick fix our exhaust with it and the smoke and smell was aweful 😅 it held though just took weeks to stop burning off
@ouch1011
Жыл бұрын
It may sound counterintuitive, but pistons actually don’t get as hot as the exhaust. They see very brief peaks of high temperatures, but the pistons probably have a metal temp of less than 250deg F since they are cooled by the oil and cylinder walls and intake air/fuel mixture to some extent. The exhaust only gets cooled by the air passing over it, so it gets much hotter.
Great test as usual!
