I've always been curious about welding up the valve pockets on a piston and then machining the tops flat. And then re-machining valve pockets in a different location for a custom application.

Me too - fill in the unused "eyebrows" and leave them a bit "proud" so you can CC the chambers and file-grind some of the weld on some of the pistons to get the CR perfect. Was thinking the weld would crack-warp the pistons or would simply come loose or other problems. This would be a street motor with 76CC smog heads.

Thanks for the response. See if I can get one more from you. What type of tungsten do you use for aluminum? I run a syncrowave 350 at work and have tried all but zirconated tungstens and my 1/8 are all deforming. Tried different preps with no help. Mind you this is also at only 200 amps. 1/8 should carry that. Again thanks for the feedback!

So I've got a question, maybe you can give some pointers. I have both an air cooled Lincoln 225 and a water cooled Miller 350 amp machines. I do quite a bit of aluminum TIG welding and I have an older Kawasaki 750 twin project I'm developing. Performance parts for this particular motorcycle engine are pretty much nonexistent. I have several sets of new OEM aluminum pistons and I'd like to try to add an additional 1/4 to 1/2 inch dome on the tops of the pistons to then machine them on my Bridgeport for a higher compression set. What are your thoughts to adding stacks of filler metal to the crown area of the piston? Do you have any suggestions on combating potential warp if any might occur? Currently I have dozens of other junk pistons to practice with, I just thought I'd ask someone else who has at least welded a few... Thanks for your time and any suggestions you might have.

That must be a rare piston. I had a DZ chevy 302 69 Camaro motor that had 2 cracked pistons in it that were obsolete I may have done it to that one if I thought it would work. They wanted a fortune to make me a set I ended up using a lower compression piston and it came out fine. What is it out of?

Seems easy enough; i don't weld, but i give out quite a few jobs to professional welders; i am a marine mechanic, and i have here a volvo penta piston off of a AQ151C, and the darn thing has been obsolet for 5 or 6 years now, can't find one; money is no object in this case,is the 4043 the best filler for a cast Al piston,do you know?

  • @txsviking

@@txsviking thanks, was wondering if 4047 with the12% Si was better; edit: do you think that i should pre-heat it? it has lost about 1.5 inches of all 3 ring lands, now after cleaning, about 2 inches need filling; precision turning for the rings, afterwards, is no problem.
