gear oil. something we do with the racecars when the transmission starts to fail is we drain the oil from the pan and fill it back up with the thickest gear oil that we can get. i don't know the long term effects of doing this on a road vehicle, but i'm telling you that it'll turn a car that can barely move into something that drives. and honestly, if the transmission is shot anyway then there's nothing to lose. i'm used to dealing with transmissions that have worn clutches, not ones that have broken planetary gears. there's a big difference. if you're transmission is slipping because you lost your friction material then thicker oil WILL make it work.
It would have been interesting to see how UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) oil would have worked

The things these guys come up with are amazing and funny. I really enjoy watching
Brilliant !!!. I always wondered what would happen if you try different fluids on an AT transmision.
The other clutch pack the one that engages reverse is known as the direct clutch. The reason it would have been better than the others is because that pack is only used in reverse and overdrive (your "last gear"). Naturally it's not as worn, although if you tow/haul a lot and don't use the O/D Off switch on the dash that pack will easily burn up since it's not designed for high loads. My theory for why the higher viscosity oil didn't engage reverse would probably have been moving quickly enough to actuate the direct clutch piston, due to the small passages?? Where the lower would have the opposite effect and not enough pressure 🤔
What these guys do is the very basic foundation of ALL SCIENCE. There are people here in the USA who complain about tax money going to weird science projects. This is that kind of research which gave us TEFLON, LPG, DDT, and many others.
I have this same transmission in my RX300. It grenaded/shredded itself, because of the planetary gear. Mine was much, much worse. I had to buy new planetary sets because the others were in terrible shape. I welded the main planetary pins so they will never come loose. It's a known issue on the U140. You are very lucky this did not do the same as mine. I rebuilt mine as well, and it runs like it's brand new now. They are actually good transmissions besides that one defect. They're on U740's now after many changes. These are supposed to use Toyota transmission fluid, and not dexron. I don't know what the difference is, but I try to stick with OEM. That pack that was barely used is actually the second gear clutch pack that also engages reverse. In second gear, it just activates on. In reverse, I think the first gear pack engages, along with the second to get the planetary gear train to run in reverse. I also rebuilt a new valve body with a kit because I was having troubles with second gear. Until I later realized I had 2 of the C rings swapped, so second gear was never engaging properly. Once I fixed that, everything is working amazingly well.

Yea that's the lock skipping on the gear
@cobravids
Жыл бұрын
A wild guess, the click click was the tiny parking sprawl skipping over its notch. Most people don't realize in most transmissions the so called "parking gear" is a thin 1 or two inch wide tab that slips into a small slot just as small and thin. That's why you never put it in park without engaging brake. Proper parking procedure Place car in neutral Pull/push emergency brake Let off brake and let the emergency brake catch the car. Then place into park. Always avoid putting into park and letting it roll. A parking gear is not a gear nor is it safe.
Old bush fix to get you home. Leaking radiator - 1egg white Slipping trans - small amount of sand in the oil Noisy diff - part of banana peel. None of these are recommended!
When you reving it at 4000 and it starts moving those clutches are probably SCREAMING haha
You should connect two gearboxes, sequentially. No need for a second clutch, just direct link, like a transfer case. Mitsubishi did that twin-stick manual thing in the 80's with the two speed splitter behind a four speed manual, offering eight forward speeds and two reverses, so depending on if you use two four speed 1/1 ratio final drive units, or two five-speed overdrive units, you'd have a couple of different variables. Two four speeds would, effectively, be 17 forward gears, and four reverse gears, You'd have four forward speeds lower than the original first gear, and reverse ratios, for advanced crawling, you'd have a mystery gear, when you put both transmissions into reverse, but you'd have the same final drive ratio. Two five speeds, you'd have 26 forward speeds, five reverse speeds + 1L/RL crawl ratios and the addition of double overdrive, which might increase top speed, if it doesn't lug the engine too much. Probably only a semi truck would have that beat, even Porsche only has a seven speed manual.
lol bro. Conventional automatics used motor oil a long time ago. thats why they change the name to "transmission fluid", not "transmission oil" (to reduced confusion). The change was required because transmission loads became high (they needed a dedicated ATF).
Nothing beats new.

They burned clutches inside the transmission, that's why oil changes aren't helping it to move. Simple as that
Automatic transmissions are hydrolic based, which needs transmission fluid which is just a special mix of oil and hydrolic fluid, basically the same thing your brakes use.
Love this guy!! He's nuts!!@! 😀
My old truck service manual states 30w non-detergent motor oil for transmission. So motor for transmission is a thing.
great video.
On automatic transmissions the reverse on almost every one needs the most pressure because it is clamping all the bands. Each fluid you guys tried probably burned the clutches more and more.
I over filled the transmission on my 96 sentra once. Found out of you put it in neutral and Rev the engine, it would move forward! Totally took out the excess fluid immediately. So perhaps just filling it over full may have helped the car move, not necessarily just using thicker fluid?
What about limited slip differential additive ?
🤣 they knocked a planetary gear right out of the carrier! LOL
I always heard If you dump in Ford Type-F fluid it Can extend the life of a fried transmission because it is more “grippy”
would have been neat to see what type f fluid would have done for the first change. always the first thing to add for a crisper shift and more clutch grab.

had a car i bought used, after going on highway for awhile it would get hot and start to lock up. managed to get it home and changed the oil and also added duralube it ran like a top ever since. duralube was/is much better than stp crap but i wonder if adding simular stuff would do same thing as you're attempting. however, reverse is always been a downer from my expereince.
Hey, that car has the Aisin U140 model automatic transmission, what happened to the planatary gear for that pin and gear to come loose like that, there was insufficient lubrication, the rollers that allow that small gear to spin around the pin got locked up..that is it did not work as a bearing any more, being locked up and forcing the car to move results in the mechanism that holds that pin in place being destroyed and the pin comming loose...the first clutch pack shown that burnt up is the one located in the drum behind the transmission pump, it uses plastic/nylon square cut profile seals, these fail, clutch pack looses pressure and results it overheated clutch pack...the same for the other overheated clutch pack..that us located on the transmission side cover, it also uses the same design square profile plastic/nylon seals, these fail, results in pressure loss and overheated clutches...a proper test would have been with a transmission assembled with metal sealing rings instead of those plastic/nylon seal rings and a good planatary assembly, also the transmission filter from the factory is a stainless steel mesh, it is recommended to clean it with every fluid change/ experiment....
Maybe a friction modifier like motorcycle oil would be more useful helping the worn out clutch packs

Oh God, they've upgraded...
Typical oils are designed to make things slippery and will make the transmission slip worse. ATF has specific additives that allow the clutches to engage smoothly but grip firmly once engaged.
@mann_idonotreadreplies
Жыл бұрын
almost correct buddy. How smooth the clutch pack engage is controlled by pressure, not fluid. ATF fluid does allow clutch to grip so your correct here.

I have a idea for your next video. Hydraulic fluid for brake fluid. What works better and what lasts longer?
my trans is having a 1/2 shift hunt when cold. was going to dig into it but then tonight my engine decided to pour all its coolant out the exhaust and into the oil...
I wonder what the problem is I mean generally it's just a set of gears that use the clutches but maybe the pump was wearing out that's mostly all I think it would do because if there is no more friction material on the frictions more pressure wouldn't make much of a difference

I put ATF into a failing engine to get it to my place to do a swap (I had nothing else available to put in the car) - yeah well the engine seized on the highway and put a hole right where the catalyst is. The resulting explosion of fire is something my friends and I will never forget. I actually got the car running, gave it back to my buddy with a new engine (used, $400 from a wreckers) and he decided to keep the slightly melted rear bumper on it. I actually took it to New York (500 mile one way) and then sold it to another buddy, who got 6 more months out of it.

What do you think a car heater is? It's a miniature radiator dumping heat into the interior.
@peterjohnson9438

It's called the heater core. It's a small radiator connected to the engine cooling loop, on a separate circuit from the one that goes through the radiator thermostat. Instead, the heat knob in your car controls a valve that determines how much coolant flows through it. It sits behind dash, all the ventilation air is pushed through it. Fun fact: it can be used to cool down your engine if you turn the heat up to max and open the windows.

I’ll bet the clutches inside the trans are shot. Or possibly the rings and seals. Me trick to get the seals to do their job is to pick brake fluid in it. Rake fluid swells the seals and softens them, but it’s not a permanent fix. It’s a trick used by used car lots and unscrupulous sellers.
