Pirelli Scorpion AT+ Long Term Review

After more than 10,000 kays driving on the Pirelli Scorpion AT+ all terrain tyre, Jared gives us the down low on his experience with them. Did they live up to being the "unicorn" all terrain tyre that Pirelli promised they would be? Tune in to find out!
Full Transcript:
Gudday I'm Jared from Tyre Review and for the last ten-thousand K's or so I've been rolling on the new Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus, which is an evolution of their old pattern the ATR, but not to be confused because the new one is apparently better and more developed and that sort of thing.
Actually I've been really impressed with these tyres. We took them to the West Coast as part of the Tyre Review Winter Adventure, and we thrashed the hell out of them over there and they came back for more.
And then all the way back we, because we went to Strahan which is about three or four hours West of where we are now, and on the road pushing them hard they were really, really good, but also for the remainder of the ten-thousand K's they've impressed.
On the farm, which is where we are right now, or on the road, or with passengers in the car. These are a more aggressive pattern as well, so they're really, if you're looking for that aggressive look on the road but also for something that's going to be aggressive for actual full driving then thoroughly recommend them.
The only thing I've noticed is they're a bit more of a solid tyre, so comfort factor is down slightly, but the road handling and the four wheel drive capabilities really makes up for that, so as a well rounded tyre I'd thoroughly recommend them.
These actually are a snow rated tyre so they've got the three-peak rating, which means that you can take them up into the snow and they will tolerate those conditions and actually you don't necessarily need a snow tyre for the snow.
We took these up to the snow in Central Highlands Tasmania and got into some deep snow, and they actually, they loved it. Again, thoroughly recommend them.
The new Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus, after ten-thousand K's looking good. Thoroughly recommend.

    The tires came just today! Wooooow! What a difference Very smooth , very very quiet! It was raining today. Top safe ride even in corners! The tires are fascinating and I would say unique in the entire AT category. I drove many tires from many other brands but these tires really impressed me. No aquaplaning. No way! All the water goes to the side. What I immediately noticed is that I have complete control over the steering wheel, very very soft steering and the steering wheel is now so stable that you can leave it without hands on a straight road! I tried it and I’m thrilled. This immediately showed me that the tires are extremely stable, precise and keep their direction without touching steering wheel! Exactly what matters in driving. Control. The other thing I felt while driving was the softness of crossing over potholes and bumps on the asphalt. What a tire! Maaan. I can feel and see exactly what the engineers have built into these tires. I am very satisfied even much much more! Very veeeery good tire. Size is 265 70 R16 112T and come from Brasil.

My buddy has K02s (they're everywhere) and they are noisy on the highway and wearing quicker than they had hoped. I got 80,000 km out of my Goodyear Wranglers which have worn well and included 15,000 km while towing a 7,000lb RV. I was pleased with them, but they weren't the best in snow. I spend a lot of time on dirt with my Commodore VY wagon and run these on the rear. On blacktop they are quiet, grippy and perform well wet or dry (wet grip is outstanding). On dirt roads or tracks they are equally superb with far more grip than the AT pattern would indicate. I can push thru stuff that should stop a 2wd in its tracks without even turning the traction control off (VY traction control is useless on wet dirt/mud, you go nowhere). Great job Pirelli!

    Great channel, thanks. The scorpion AT+ is currently my top choice for a 2007 Range Rover. Which of these options would give the most comfortable ride? The tread will give me what I need for gravel, mud and light snow. The complicated bit is working out the relationship between sidewall and load index. Which combo gives best on road ride? And yes, I realise they are different diameters. But that is OK. 255/55/19 111H 275/55/20 113T 285/50/20 116T Looking forward to your comments.

    Hey Doctor, if ride is key, then the deeper the sidewall, the more comfortable they'll be. The second tyre you posted has a sidewall that's 7.8% bigger than the first, even though it's on a taller rim, because it's actually about 6% bigger overall. The other influencing factor is load rating, but they're all pretty similar, with the first one having the lowest load... so that *may* make it slightly more comfortable. For my money, I'd go the second ones (275/55R20) as they're bigger (more clearance) and have a similar load rating 👍

    Hi mate, first up, they're both great tyres. You won't go far wrong with either. The two (maybe three) areas in which the Pirelli pips the Falken are road noise, where the Pirelli was quieter in the long run than the Falken, the Pirelli held the road better in the wet on my dual cab ute as well (this was before I started working this sort of discussion into the long term tests), and the dry road traction and "feel" with the Pirelli is spectactular too. • @TyreReviewVideos

    @TyreReviewVideos

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey mate, you won't go wrong with either of them I reckon. I found the Pirelli a little more comfortable, and better if you're pushing the tyres hard on the road, but the Falkens are more aggressive on the sidewall and have more road presence. The Pirellis were marginally quieter than the Falkens at the end of the 10k km, too, but both were a heck of a lot better than many other tyres... For example I had a Toyota Corolla rental car the other day that was so flippin noisy inside that both of these seemed like they were silent in comparison. Off road I'd be confident taking either on most tracks. If cash was no issue I'd personally get five Pirellis, but the Falkens are usually a bit cheaper, so might be easier on the wallet. Hope that helped? 😁

    That helps, thanks Jarred! Price wise, I don't think there's much in it between to two for 5 tyres, I was edging towards the Pirelli's, but I did have a set of the Falken AT2 on my previous car which were fantastic, and the At3 look like they've addresses the issues on V2. Hey mate, I'd say they're different tyres for different purposes. I haven't come across them before (we don't have much call for pure winter tyres here in Australia!), but the Blizzaks are dedicated winter tyres, while the Scorpions are an all season tyre that has the 3PMSF rating, so can also perform reasonably well in the winter. I'd go out on a limb, though, and say that they wouldn't perform as well in snow and ice as a dedicated winter tyre. It'd be interesting to test, though!

    @@TyreReviewVideos The consensus seems to be the same as you're guessing, I asked at the shop that installed my tires today and they advised that I swap my tires to full winter tires once the snow starts to fly. (I live in Canada next to mountains.)

    Good to hear! You'll have the best of both worlds, really. In case you get caught in the white stuff when you've still got the Pirelli's on, you'll still be able to have some reasonable traction 👍

    Hey mate, just had a look at the one we have in the warehouse and in the middle of the block, it's pretty much full depth. They don't really cut through to the outside of the block though, which is potentially a good thing.

    @@TyreReviewVideos appreciate the reply! How would you compare this tire to the Falken Wildpeak AT3W which is a tire i previously ran and loved for the winters in my area but they have gone up in price considerably!

    I didn't use it in serious snow/ice etc, but from my usage I would say they're pretty similar, but if held over a barrel I'd go the Pirelli's, as they have better road holding ability, and stayed quieter, longer 👍👍

    Hi Jarred, as I'm going to drive an amateur rally through northern Africa I'm looking for a really tough tyre. The favorites are the Pirelli Scorpion AT+, the KO2's as well as the Nokian Rotiiva AT plus. Which one would you recommend in terms of punctureproofness?

  • @TyreReviewVideos

    @TyreReviewVideos

    Hey mate, that sounds awesome! Something to look at would be the balance between the load rating and the conformability of the tyre... if that's even a proper word. But basically, the higher the load rating, the more "plies" it has (which is an old school term, and they've moved away from that), which means it'll be more puncture resistant than exactly the same tyre with a lower load rating. The thing about higher load ratings is that they're less comfortable. For example, the other day we had two Toyota Hilux's, one with the Yokohama Mud Terrain, the other with the Yokohama All Terrain. Both were inflated to 16psi, and the AT was bagging out nicely, while the MT looked like it still had 34psi in it, it was so flippin solid. Ride quality on the MT's was rubbish as well, so that is the trade off between toughness and comfort. I can't really comment on the long term toughness of the tyres you mentioned, and haven't actually come across the Rotiiva before (they're not common in Australia, apart from the occasional winter tyre), but it could be worth having a look at our Best All Terrain Tyres page, which I've sorted at the link below by tread wear and off road ratings - you can fiddle with that if you want, the buttons in the top right of the listings. www.tyrereview.com.au/best-all-terrain-tyres-2019?page=1&orderby=rating&order=desc&orderAttributes%5B%5D=offroad&orderAttributes%5B%5D=treadwear Anyway, hopefully that's helped, and best of luck!

    Thanks mate! Yes, that helps. Didn't have thought about taking load ratings into consideration regarding toughness. So, the Nokian Rotiiva AT plus wins this comparison with 123/120 (they use Aramid fibres in the sidewall) against the BFGs with 119/116 and the Pirelli ATR plus with 116. Thanks for the link. Regards

    That sounds like a reasonable comparison based on load ratings, but I'd certainly take other opinions on board in terms of puncture resistance and general traction, too. Rock on 🤘

    venevivico Pirelli are saying quieter than the atr they replace but you only have to look at them and use your head to know that's total bs. Online everyone says they are super quite however all new tires are and or seem quite when you fit them... It's 30k is down the track etc when they get noisy. Personally I'm disappointed the atr has been discontinued... To me this is a wanker tire more about how it looks etc... I don't get it

    They seem like a good replacement tire for Tacoma but the fact that the tread pattern forms a P for Pirelli and an S for Scorpion is a bit of a turn off. It just doesn't seem very scientific to me, more like a gimmick.
