All Terrain Tyres... Did I buy the wrong ones?

So you have a new SUV or dual cab ute and it came with highway terrain tyres and now you want to tour the country and get off the sealed roads. Well you probably need to upgrade the tyres as the first thing to do... but what do you get? In my unbiased review I help you decide.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Just purchased all terrain tyres falken wild peak (non LT) recently and it can get pretty confusing. If your driving alot of outback gravel roads then you almost have to go with an LT tyre. For me though it's hard to justify going for an LT tyre when probably 95% plus time is spent on bitumen. Most Ute's and 4wds require a 112 load rating and most LT tyres seem to be 120 load rating hence the hefty additional tyre weight. A 120 rated tyre is sufficient for a Ford F250 which an absolute monster truck compared to your typical Australian 4wd. Maybe an LT 114 would be a better compromise

Hi David, with 95% on bitumen I think you made a good choice. The WildPeaks have a great reputation and I agree the extra weight of the LT's is not always warranted. That being said I think the WildPeaks will do pretty well when you are off the seal... they are good quality tyres and there is a lot of them out there. Interested to know what sort of vehicle you are running them on. Thanks for watching and your comment. John

@@cannyoutdoors I have a base ford everest and its been a reliable vehicle for the last six years. The wildpeaks have been good on road so far and am hoping they will be fine for the light off roading I have planned ie, dirt roads and 4wd tracks in Queensland's national parks

Good car the Everest, the new generation looks great also. I think you will be fine with the wildpeaks . I would just make sure to drop the pressure on those dirt roads. I'm no expert but have found about 26-28 lbs in the Ranger seems right. I don't know where you're going but the Diamantina NP and in particular Hunters Gorge is one not to miss if you are in that area. Enjoy, John.

My cousin has the Falken Wildpeaks at 275/70r/16 and he lives up north near the woods. We've gone through a few steep hills and he rarely had to switch on 4-wheel drive in order to get up the hill. Of course, mpg went down quite considerably but that was something he was willing to accept when he made the choice to upgrade from the factory size. I own a Tacoma and I went from a 245/75/16 to a 265/70/16 and not the 265/70r/16 LT version. The tires performed extremely well in my area with me traveling nearly highway speed on 2wd mode on 3 inches of snow. I just drove last night off road on a run down trail with the tire trenches being around down to 13 inches deep with the middle obviously still sticking up quite high. The truck made it there just fine and I didn't even have to air it down or anything. I was amaze at its ability but I spend the majority of my time on the road traveling so the Pirelli in my case is perfect. Yes, again...the Pirelli comes in two version with the regular and LT. One is rated around 2400 lbs with a maximum pressure of 44 psi while the LT version is rated at 3100 lb with a maximum pressure of 80 psi. The occasional hauling and dirt adventures lead me to the regular version. The only sand/dirt area I've been to is death valley in California where I went off track to an oasis where there were a lot of nugget size jagged rocks and I didn't have any issue. Besides that the Pirelli's aren't as well known to many people so most people usually go for the BFG KO2 or Falken Wildpeaks or Toyo AT2/3 and yes the most popular size is 285 for the show off followed by the 275 for the in between trying to conserve some gas and the factory guys like myself who likes to stay within the 265 but maybe an inch or two of lift wouldn't hurt. Overall performance with the majority of its on road...the Pirelli is difficult to beat.

Thanks so much for your extremely interesting comments. I am unlikely to ever see snow where I live but we certainly have plenty of very hot dry and rocky or sandy areas to explore. I would be interested in knowing what part of the States you are in. I have visited there many times as next to Australia it's my favorite country. I agree with your comments and the Pirellis are certainly a great tyre (tire). All the best for the new year, John

Many thanks for your review.. I will be spending some time in outback NQ this year as well as the cape. (No rough Stuff) I was almost convinced to buy the Pirelli Scorpion AT3 as at least 60 % of their life would be on bitumen. I decided however to buy Goodrich AT KO2 mainly for safety and strength on dirt roads. I also went for 265 width rather than the stock 275 on my old 2003 landcruiser as I though it would give me better side wall protection. I have just read your review and your comments have made me more confident about my decision. Again many thanks and happy travelling.

I agree, they seem to be a great tyre and are reasonably priced. I haven't had a set myself but have spoken to a number of people who are very happy with the Wildpeaks. I suspect they may be better in the wet on sealed roads. Thanks for your comment. John

Just make sure you rotate them frequently because once they chop out they don’t stop and become noisy. Had KM 2’s on my old hilux and got great wear with rotation every service and a wheel alignment every few services for cheap insurance. Mate has KO 2’s on his Ranger and has let them chop every second outer lug and they are now far louder than my muddies ever were. Currently running Toyo open country at2’s, so far so good. Might be different in big cities but here most tyre shops dont stock bf’s any more due to the cost compared to other brands

Nice work, On your 4wd you should get around 80,000ks or more out of BFG KO2s. Most AT tires theses days do a great job, I have ran a few different types of the cheaper $170 to $200 on my last two 4wds over the years been up the Cape many times, out western QLD, NSW, NT never had a flat tire on a trip, get around 55 to 60,000ks towing out of most of them, The last set I bought were $200 fpt, Vitora contrylife they done 20,000ks up the Cape and back and other trips, should get around 70 to 80,000ks out of them on my old 1990 --80 series

I have the same pirelli tyres on my fj cruiser and can’t fault them, on road and wet weather handling is great and travelled a lot of gravel/ dirt approx 40000 km and they have no damage whatsoever. It’s a shame you only got low km’s from them.

Yes it's interesting, I had them on a Mitsubishi Trident and had a great run, changed the vehicle at 60k and they were still probably 80%. Great in the wet and dry also.Thats why I bought a set for the Ranger. I then went for the KO2s for the higher load rating (and milage) and a (I hope) a bit tougher tyre for the really stony tracks I travel on. Just can't really explain the low mileage on the Ranger. Thanks for your comment John
