Pirastro Eudoxa and Oliv - Gut Double Bass Strings - Comparison

Музыка

Pirastro's Eudoxa and Oliv strings have similarities, they are all gut core strings with a metal flatwound surface. So what are the differences? Here are my answers.
CORRECTION: The tension of the Oliv G is 26,1 kg and not 25,5 as written in the video.

I never thought you would do a comparison of the Eudoxas, there is almost no way to hear how they sound on youtube. Thank you good sir! Great content and you are a fantastic musician

Great demonstration I think the singing comparison showed me the best example of the 2 strings, The Eudoxa had a nice sustaining round sound to it while the Olivs had a percussive sound to it which some players may prefer. Thanks for making this comparison.

I have to say I prefer the Olives. I prefer a very old school gut sound and am not looking for much sustain, so the thump and punch of the olives appeals to my taste. thanks for the videos.

Thanks for this great comparison, I'm looking forward to your review of the combination of Pirazzo Olive G and D with Evah Pirazzi A and E. I play this combination on my bass since 4 years and I'm very happy with it. And it may be interesting, that the Olive-strings on my bass sound more like the Eudoxas in your video, with more growl and sustain. It seems as you will get different results with different basses.

Excellent presentation. Oliv's definitely punchier pizzicato, but both strings surprisingly similar arco...the individual instrument is so important.

I just recently purchased a Eudoxa G to go with my Spiro mittels. I felt the Eudoxa G was very stiff in comparison to the Spiros. I was expecting the opposite. With that said, the Eudoxa sounded amazing. Bright, punchy, clear and I felt it made my bass just sound better overall. It's an excellent string. I'll give the Oliv G another shot.

I think the Eudoxas are more articulate and clear and sound best all the way up to the D on the G string, but above that I prefer the Oliv.

Sir! If you had to choose an A string to go with the olive D and G, would it be the Eudoxa A or an Olive A? The Eudoxa A seems closers to the Olive D than the Olive A (seems quite dull)

Well the brightness of the eudoxa matches better. But in terms of thump, maybe the oliv matches better. But yes, it is quite dull and short.

This is a very informative video on gut strings covered with flatwound silver (Eudoxa) or flatwound chrome steel (Oliv). Up to now I thought the silver is roundwound on the Eudoxa strings (like the Efrano E and A strings). I would like to hear the difference between plain gut, roundwound and flatwound, espacial in case of the A-string and the E-String. My opinion: With the bow the roundwounds A and E mix better with plain gut D and G-strings. Do you think this is true?

Thank you for your feedback Wolfgang! For the comparisons I think the String matrix on my website (hervejeanne.de) can be helpful for you. Concerning the lower strings when you have plain gut on g/d: I guess you are right since sets like chorda (with roundwound a/e) are being used for baroque music, so I would think such a combination matches well. But I must admit that I am not a specialist for arco so it's more a guess...

Stringmatrix Gut Strings are rather fragile & they tend to snap easily, so Helicore Strings would work better. Helicore Solo Strings tuned down a Step would work too.
