I've had a set of Zyex Low Tension on my bass for the last 4 years (previously, Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Weich, and before that, Spirocore Weich), and 2 weeks ago, I put on a set of Zyex Medium Tension. It was also the first time I had changed strings using a drill bit peg winder - WHAT A DREAM! 😄 My bass responds so much better under the Medium Tension, and the sound has changed slightly (but more than I was expecting!) - it sounds more focused and supported. I think with the lighter tension strings I've used in the past, they allowed me to dig in too hard for both arco and pizz, and the Mediums now "push back" a bit more in only the best way! Over time, the Zyex do mellow out a fair bit, but still retain some good clarity, but it gets warmer.

Nice! I need to check and see what the tension level was for those Zyex-I can’t seem to remember.

It's incredible to me that your puppy hasn't moved throughout this whole video!! Must find the sound of the bass very soothing!!

It’s funny-he’s a super high energy dog, but he knows that when I’m talking to the camera there’s no hope of me paying attention to him! 😃

Your comments on the zyex match my experience exactly. They were great for pizz but have quite a bright bowed tone. I went back to kaplan right after.

The Zyex were brighter and thinner.. Not my preference with the bow. However, the brightness is very useful with pizz jazz. When you're dealing with other instruments especially cymbals, the brightness is needed. I use Zyex.. Thanks so much for the comparison!!

Great stuff, Jason. I’ve been loving the Perpetuals and my colleagues seem to approve, as well. They take some getting used to, for sure. I’ve had to use less pressure and a bit more bow speed to compensate for the fact that they are so responsive and flexible. Thank you for the initial recommendation.

Jason Heath, as a fellow bassist, I always enjoy your YT content as it helps with my continual 'trial and error' with bass-ssories. Thank you and please keep the content going. So now, while I'm currently debating whether I should go with an old 1960s Kay or a Shen SB200 as a regular, I think I'll give the Zyex set another shot. Right now I'm using Evahs. The Shen to be as new as it is, doesn't sound too shabby. Anyway, I'm looking forward to your future video.

The Zyex are really interesting. They seem to work quite differently depending on the bass, and a lot of people swear by them. Let me know what you think if you end up switching to them!

Strings have to be the biggest rabbit hole! I'm debating between three different ones for my next orchestra string: Thomastik-Infeld Belcanto, Pirastro Passione, and Pirastro Original Flexocor! It's maddening at times.

The fact that you have to sink in a couple hundred bucks a set (at least!) doesn’t; help, right? That’s why i stick to one brand of string once I find one that works.

@@doublebasshq yeah exactly! I haven't really found one that works with my bass yet, so I think I'll be trying Pirastro Passione after my gut strings wear out.

I like to hear your observations. Right now I’m using Pirastro Oliv D and G. I love them! But I’m looking for the perfect E and A. I have Thomastik Superflexible E and A, but am considering trying the spiro again. But am open to suggestions.

The tone is ultimately pretty similar, but articulation with the Xyexs seems to be pretty rough. You sounded more comfortable and cleaner with the Pirastros.

Yeah, the Zyex have this wild quality on my bass. It’s weird, because they are way tamer on other basses. Still, I think they are interesting strings.

Interesting comparison. I play mostly arco & prefer softer strings with left hand arthritis. I was not happy with my Perpetuals and the Zyex sound really nasal on this video. My favorite strings were Velvet Compas 180 but of course, they're gone., I found Belcantos were meh but died quickly, Evah's were awful and choked my bass. I could almost tolerate Corelli 370F in an emergency. I'm playing Tempera's now and 1 year in, they're still awesome. If Velvet starts back up I would be tempted because they are much more affordable, otherwise Mr, Genssler gets my $

My fifth (V) tuned bass have now Perpetual D and solo A on the top and Obligato C and G at bottom. It will take some time to be used with the sonic difference. Obligato is really nice bth bowed and pizz with good volume. Perpetual D is nice on bow but a little bitt weak when fingered. Solo A is more brilliant than other A strings i tried under my over 20 years vit this tuning but it gives you very nice arcosolo sound.
