The Pirastro John Patitucci Combination: G/D Oliv and A/E Evah Pirazzi - Double Bass Strings

Музыка

Pirastro's Oliv bass strings are fantastic for jazz on G and D. But the lower strings are not ideal for pizz players. A great option for a mixed set are Evah Pirazzi on A and D. This set is endorsed by the amazing John Patitucci. I am not sure weather John uses the Mittel or the Weich version. But in my opinion, the tension of the Weichs matches better with the Olivs. Listen for yourselves, this is a great combination for a set that is punchy but also gives you the possibility to play melodically.

  • @stringmatrix

    @stringmatrix

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Johannes: Ja, die Pirazzi Slaps sind eigentlich recht nah am Sound der Olivs, aber die haben weniger Spannung. Ich hatte Pirastro schon mal gefragt, ob die nicht mal probieren wollen, die Pirazzi Slaps mit etwas mehr Spannung zu machen, denn das würde nach meiner Einschätzung einen tollen Oliv-Artigen Satz ergeben. Ich hatte vor einiger Zeit ein Video gemacht wo ich Oliv und Pirazzi Slap kombiniere, schlau mal in meiner alten Videos. Sonores: Berechtigte Frage! Die Antwort: Mir war die G-Saite des Wraps Satzes gerissen. Als ich überlegte, wie ich die ersetzen kann, fiel mir die Oliv ein. Aber es wäre komisch gewesen, die D-Saite als einzige ohne metallische Umwindung zu haben. Also beschloss ich auch die D-Saite zu ersetzen und war damit noch glücklicher als mit den Wraps G/D. Ich fand vor allem gut alle Saiten mit Metall-Oberfläche zu haben, z.B. zum streichen. Und der Satz kam mir vielseitiger vor.

    Great demonstration! It's a combination I'm considering for my bass for a while now (I'm now using Evah weich E+A+D and Oliv G) and this video gives me a good idea of the sound I can expect. How Is the tuningstability of the Oliv D? That's the only thing I still worry about a bit

  • @stringmatrix

    Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this in the video... Unfortunately everytime I pick up a bass with Oliv d, it's mostly that string that's most out of tune, sometimes too high sometimes too low. But during a gig, once the bass got used to the weather conditions, the tuning stability is ok!

    @@stringmatrix On my bass the Oliv G and the Oliv D are detuning in a very similar way. After getting them in tune, on the following day both of them are too high. I think a Oliv D will behave like your Oliv G.

    Hi Harve, so would you be able to comment on comparing sustain and melodic quality in upper register between this EP E/A + Olive D/G with Thomastic Spirocore? How about bowing capability comparison? There seem to be a lot of Thomastic Spirocore gravity in the community of bass players for a long time and if this combination of EP & Olive is a good contender I think it is a good idea to do that comparison.

  • @stringmatrix

    @stringmatrix

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Arya! Two things briefly (but I should explain this in a video): #1: Spirocores are so popular because they are fantastic strings... for what they can (great clear cutting through timbre, growl, possibility of making an upright sing like a fretless etc...) #2: There is no string that will give you "everything". So if you want some bouncy thump in the attack, you are better off with something else than Spirocore, you will prefer something more "gutty". And the Oliv/Evah combination is a great "in-between" set, that gives you a bit of both worlds. For arco I think the Oliv/Evah set is a little nicer. But I am not a bow specialist (my arco sample in the video is not a very good demonstration).

    Hallo Hervé, vielen Dank für das interessante Video. Ich spiele ebenfalls die Patitucci-Kombination, weil es gut klingt, die Oliv-Saiten durch den geringeneren Zug meinen Bass freier zum Klingen bringen (so jedenfalls mein subjektiver Höreindruck) und in der Daumenlage sehr viel bequemer zu spielen sind. Eine Frage, die mit den Saiten nichts zu tun hat: Bei dir - und in letzter Zeit auch bei anderen Kontrabassisten - fallen mir die Griffbrett-Markierungen auf. Sind sie für dich hilfreich? Im Video sieht es ja nicht so aus, als bräuchtest du sie. So was könnte ich mir auch bei mir vorstellen, wenn in einigen Jahren das nächste Griffbrett ansteht, da ich nicht so häufig im oberen Register unterwegs bin und das gerne noch ausbauen möchte. Leider scheinen die Dots mir auch dahingehend vorurteilsbelastet zu sein, dass nur Leute, die es technisch nicht draufhaben, sich so etwas anbringen lassen - und im Übrigen besser E-Bass spielen sollten.

  • @stringmatrix

    @stringmatrix

    3 жыл бұрын

    Danke Mingus 😀! Die dots habe ich nur mit Tipp ex gemacht... Aber ich würde die gerne ordentlich machen lassen. Es ist so: wenn ich "im Fluss" bin, brauche ich die eher nicht. Mir geht es eher darum, dass es manchmal komponierte/arrangierte Passagen gibt, wo es es wichtig ist, die Töne gleich zu treffen statt suchen und evt. zum eigentlichen Ton hin sliden. Was andere sagen soll uns egal sein, jeder Mensch ist anders und findet sich anders zurecht auf dem Griffbrett. Wichtig ist nur das Ergebnis, die Musik, die am Ende raus kommt.

    I am currently using the Evah Pirazzi Slaps on E-A-D with an Oliv G string. I believe you experimented with a similar setup a few years ago (but with Olivs on D-G). How would you compare that setup to this? I know the Slaps have much lower tension but wondering if the Evah Pirazzi Weichs have more clarity and volume? Thanks for all that you do my friend!

  • @stringmatrix

    @stringmatrix

    3 ай бұрын

    It depends on what you want to have in the low register. If you want sustain and growl you can take the Evah Weichs. Their sound is brighter than that of the slaps. But as for clarity: in some situations an old school punchy sound gives you more rhythmic clarity than a "singing" sound. As for volume: difficult to say. At the same action height maybe the evahs will seem louder. But when you compensate the low tension of the slaps by putting the action higher, I think they will sound equally loud.

  • @stringmatrix

    Well all my basses have slightly wider nuts since years because I have been using all sorts of strings on them. And I believe that's not a problem for thinner strings. But if you go from metal strings like Spiro to olive G the difference isn't huge, so maybe it works without modification.
