Pioneering gene therapy restores deaf toddler's hearing | BBC News
A UK toddler born deaf can now hear unaided, after a groundbreaking gene-therapy treatment.
Opal Sandy was treated shortly before her first birthday - and six months on, can hear sounds as soft as a whisper and is starting to talk, saying words such as "Mama", "Dada" and "uh-oh".
Given as an infusion into the ear, the therapy replaces faulty DNA causing her type of inherited deafness.
The trial is recruiting patients in the UK, US and Spain.

Bravo. This is why science is so important. To help a deaf child hear is, frankly, amazing.
Science is truly miraculous!

@@Universalis71384 Been there, done that. Tablets produce a false effect, the only way to overcome the issues in one’s head is to actually address them properly. Medication does nothing to help it at worst, and maybe only mildly masks it at best. My anxiety is deep rooted and likely stems from past events in my life. Until I’ve figured out everything in my head, or my brain is somehow rewired through some groundbreaking surgery… medicine will not do anything for it.

Only a matter of time before cyberpunk 2077 is a reality and character customization will be a real thing.
The phrase 'no proof of harm' is highly alarming and demonstrates article bias via exclusion of the full facts. There is no proof of safety because this is phase one of a clinical trial. Experimenting on children, who cannot give consent but will bear the long term consequences in to adulthood when the parents are gone, when the option of a cochlear implant exists, is ethically highly questionable. What happened to 'first do no harm'?

All scientific medical advances must by definition involve "experimentation" at some stage or no benefits would ever be seen.. I'm sure these surgeons were well aware of that. This little girl can now hear thanks to this wonderful procedure. We should be happy for her.
This is just the future. Birds have been able to regenerate their hearing forever. Soon hearing loss and tinnitus will be cured with a simple pill or injection.

You know, words like "gene therapy" actually have meanings, it's not just "any science I don't like". Gene therapy means permanently changing the DNA of one or more cells in the body for therapeutic purposes, like what was done in this video. The vaccine did not change any DNA in any cell at any time. It delivered mRNA which was turned into a protein by your own cells which was used to defend against the coronavirus.
