Pinocchio(1940)-Animation Pilgrimage

Ойын-сауық

A beautiful film to follow up Snow White with, but how does it compare in the story department?

One of my Grandfather's earliest memories ( that wasn't horrid) was watching Pinocchio in the theaters. So when we saw the original frames in the disney museum in California, my grandfather was over joyed. So although I've never seen or really been interested in this movie, this was a beacon of joy in my Grandfather's abusive childhood.

Pinocchio was a very strange choice for Disney's second movie, for sure: so much child abuse... However, despite my ragging on it, I could never bring myself to outright dislike it. It's a masterpiece of animation, after all, and there are some genuinely heartwarming scenes. Pinocchio acts very much like a child, something that is oddly hard to accomplish unless you hire the right child actor that is used to acting but also doesn't try to be an adult too much.

I love this one. I think it influenced a lot of my sense of humor and creativity as a young child, and Figaro is adorable. I especially loved the scenes with the clocks. I'd watch that over and over. Lots of stuff that pleasantly surprises me every time I rewatch it.

I'm with Shawn. I didn't like this movie as a kid, it bored me. And I don't remember being scared mostly just confused like ??? what's happening. Why this? Why that? lol Eh. And I didn't care for Pinocchio as a character, when I was a kid, either. I did always love the cat though. Though, it is super nice to look at now, the visuals are really stunning.

Okay, so as a kid I was like super dumb, and I had never seen this movie (even though Jiminy Cricket was my favorite Disney character) and I thought when you wish upon a star and a dream is a wish your heart makes were the same song

If you review the Aristocats... well lets just say Warrior Cat references are nearly inevitable.

When I watched it as a child (I did a few times) it always stuck out as something heartfelt to scary. The second half always shocked me cause I always forgot about it, and then I remembered why. I did remember some of the great drawings and scenes that were in it, and I will always remember those songs. But being forced to turn into a donkey and then being sold for labour really freaked me out.

Now that you mention how much of a jerk book Pinocchio was, I can kinda see why Square Enix decided to make Jimminy a bigger part of the story in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories when Sora was becoming a little jerkwad. It gives a little more of an insight to that. Edit to say I literally just got to the part where you talked about Kingdom Hearts and I'm so glad we think the same lolz.

This movie was certainly not what I was expecting, and from your breakdown of the historical context of it I can see why a little bit better! Watching this movie was certainly an experience but I'm not sure if it's one I would ever own (unless I was just trying to own every Disney movie regardless of my personal opinion). Great work! As always, I'm looking forward to the next one.

Havent watched the video yet, but this is my FAVORITE animated film, this is my favorite Disney film, and I'm so happy you guys are covering it. I hope (before watching the review) that you like it as much as I do, but I understand it's not for everyone. Whether you like it or not, no one can deny that it's absolutely a work of art.

I'm just gonna say it: I love this movie! (I didn't think I'd have to apologize for that, but it seems that I am literally the only one here who does...) I didn't mind the episodic format; Everything just seems to flow together perfectly, and I find myself heavily invested in the characters and the overall journey...I would definitely put it high on my list of Disney favorites, even higher than "Snow White".

This was the only Disney movie I couldn't watch as a kid because it terrified me, the Pleasure Island scene especially because none of those boys are rescued or changed back, and after seeing it for the first time I'd have nightmares about Pleasure Island and Monstro, nowadays I see it as a masterpiece but yeah the Coachman should've been arrested or killed.

I feel like you guys are missing the point of the movie. In my eyes, the focus is not on the story being told, but rather how far they could push the animation. Animation was so new at the time, and I think this whole movie was a show of how much they could do with this new medium.

12:24 alright in the back look at that animation! I FEEL LIKE I CAN ACTUALLY FEEL THE KITTENS FUR! I just find it so amazing that any cartoon or animation can pull something like that off. Then there would be other times in the movie with the water where I genuinely feel wet/drenched it is amazing!!!!

I think Pinocchio's fine as a character at least he's not 1 dimensional since he has flaws, and showcase strenghts in the 3rd act. However this movie had me terrified during the Pleasure Island segment. That entire scene I find incredibly disturbing and horrifying. So I was surprised to hear that someone did not find it scary, well that's unique I mean some people despise The Pink Elephants while I instead find it to be very captivating and mysterious in a pleasant way. I really enjoyed that inclusion of KH too.

@TennelleFlowers I'm so sorry I have one last request (all my other request are on the video before this , Gullivers Travelles) BUT this is not a movie, BUT it's a cartoon, I just want you to look at the designs they made of it over the years, it's called Tom and Jerry. There are so many different designs! It started in the 1940s and they still show it on TV today!!!! I would epreciate it if you just did a short talk about it, I'd like to see your point of views, I have a lot of my own opinions but that would take to long SO I'll be watching, always watchinggg

I mean syaing the Disney shorts "were not held in high regard" is absolutely not true. Based on the Silly Symphonies (and Mickey Mouse to an extent) by the mid 1930s people were referring to them as art pieces. Three Little Pigs was a phenomenon. Also... I mean Snow White has a lot of really scary stuff--Pinocchio just takes that to another level, but I'd not call Snow White a "light hearted love story..."

I have to agree with Shawn up to a point - this movie was boring, despite it's nice visuals. It was the donkey scene that really messed me up as a kid. It was the first WTF moment as a kid and I still haven't recovered. T^T I was a momma's girl so you can understand why all the kids-turned-jackasses crying out for their mother would affect me so badly. It's just... goddamn! I couldn't even watch the rest of the movie after that as a kid. Just, wtf.

I haaaaaaated Jiminy Cricket in this movie. He says he'll be Pinnochio's authority figure, and the moment Pinnochio challenges his authority once, he storms off in a sulk. Terrible character.
