@@petdechouette From the Wikipedia page: "Gilmour also plays a fretless bass guitar, with a pick, doing two short, syncopated bass solos-one before the first verse, another before the third. When the final verse ends and a guitar solo emerges, the bass line moves into a driving eighth note rhythm, sliding up and down the E minor scale in octaves, beneath the chords of E minor and C major seventh.[5] Roger Waters, usually the band's bassist, played a rhythm guitar track on the song instead."

Another absolutely brilliant reaction as always! To answer your question, there are three verses in this song, each written about different people. The second and third verses are written about Margaret Thatcher and Mary Whitehouse. The first verse is written about politicians and businessmen in general. I have been following your channel for about a month now and seeing your insane reactions to music, especially Pink Floyd has been really refreshing and enjoyable. Keep doing what your doing!

Definitely their angriest and most contempt-filled song, which is especially evident in the ending solo. But instead of going loud and brash like other bands probably would of, they just laugh straight in the faces of the "pigs", not even giving them the satisfaction of losing their composure in the process. All three tracks from this album are incredible, but this one is just on another level imo. Really glad you enjoyed this.

What a great (as usual)reaction to an epic track. Simply put, the album "Animals" was Roger Waters' screed denouncing life and society in Great Britain in the early/mid '70s, and loosely based on the concepts proposed by George Orwell in his dystopian novel Animal Farm. Roger compares as follows: Dogs were big business and pigs were the government and elites, both of whom preyed upon the general populace, represented by the sheep (which is the order on the album). When the 'sheep' finally rise up and defeat the dogs, they enjoy a momentary feeling of freedom, but now lacking leadership and direction, ultimately fall back into their lethargic and unadventurous ways, now led by a new set of tyrants. BTW, some references are mistaken by listeners - "Whitehouse" is not what they think - it is a refence to Mary Whitehouse, an ultraconservative who constantly railed against the government, media, and public about what she felt were declining morals in Britain. She was that decade/Euro equivalent of the later bullshit promoted by Tipper Gore in the '80s and '90s here in America.

  • @z-man2343

Except Ms. Whitehouse, unlike Tipper Gore (whose philandering husband Al Gore is "global warming" scam artist) was right. I mean, take an honest look at the state of Great Britain today compared to a couple of decades ago...it's in the shitter, and getting shittier by the day. And trust me, it ain't conservative politicians fault.

I'm a Pink Floyd fanatic since a teenager in school when The Wall was released in 1980 and getting stoned with all my mates listening to The Wall and was at the Pulse Concert at Earls Court in London in October 1994, tripping off Magic Mushrooms and it was the Greatest Concert I've Ever Been To..!! But Animals is my favourite Floyd album which is saying something considering their other masterpieces but musically and lyrically Animals beats them all..!! Roger Waters wrote the lyrics in 1977 as a homage to George Orwells novel Animal Farm about Animals taking over from humans..!! Dogs are about ruthless business men who'll stop at nothing for power and greed, Pigs are about the 'Elite Ruling Classes' (ie) Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin etc etc and Sheep are us the common people who just live, serve and survive and do as were told by the Pigs and Dogs like Sheep do just follow..!! It's as though Roger Waters predicted the future and what's happening now with the World in Chaos..Roger Waters an absolute lyrical GENIUS

Mate I never get tired of watching your Floyd reactions - so good! On the whole Whitehouse thing in the third verse, it refers to Mary Whitehouse, the leader of the (at the time 1976) National Viewers and Listeners Association, a sort of 'cancel culture' warrior of her day, She tried to cancel Dr Who for its 'violence' which led to it morphing into a sort of light entertainment in the late 70s/early 80s. So that's what Waters is talking about here. Great reaction though, Brother. Those 'oh., fuck off' reactions convey more than mose reactors do in a two-minute speech. Keep it up, my man. The whole premise of the Animals album is that we are a nation of sheep, owned by pigs, ruled by dogs. This song is Pigs - Three Different Ones, where there are three separate sections of lyrics with each talking about a different "pig" (hence "three different ones"). One such pig is Mary Whitehouse, an English politician I think, hence the line "hey you Whitehouse" - not referring to the American Whitehouse building. The lyrics after then he mentions Mary by name. The middle section of this song where there are interesting sounds is hypnotic if you allow it to be. Yes, David Gilmour did play bass on this track and on some others as well, apparently this is when Roger is interested more on producing etc rather than performing (that's what I read anyway). Also, I think this song and possibly one other are the only songs by Pink Floy featuring a cow bell.

This is one of the first uses of the Heil Talk Box. A guitar pedal with an airtube attachment to a mic and it's own amp. It allows the player to manipulate the guitar signal with the air in his mouth.

"Whitehouse" referred to Mary Whitehouse, leader of the Viewers and Listeners Association. She was an evangelical Christian who campaigned to ban sex and violence from UK TV and movie theatres - which meant that she got to watch a lot of mucky movies!

All that base sounds along with the numerous guitars were Gilmour made. A lot of dubbing was done to make this masterpiece.

There are almost as many ways to interpret Floyd songs as there are people who love them. To me, YES, pigs are any people addicted to power and / or wealth. They employ DOGS to do their dirty work, which is squeezing all they desire from the SHEEP. The sheep can be blissfully unaware that this is happening at all. Love your work Hector. Keep going!

Everyone always raves about David's playing Bass on Pigs & Sheep When Roger's doing the Rhythm Guitar parts as well. I mean, sure he's not a virtuoso, and David's playing is absolutely immaculate on every level. But, I absolutely adore the way Roger just fucking attacks the Guitar, hectically sliding up and down, his sometimes weird chord choices/voicings. It reminds me alot of Syd's playing on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It's so chaotic and angry.

Gilmour is using a "Talk-Box with hie guitar, it's an old technology from the 1940s I think. It alows the user to combine a singer's voice with guitar notes in a solo for instance. Besides Gilmour, I can recall Peter Frampton using one quite a bit on his live album in "Frampton Comes Alive" released in 1976. You can see Gilmour using a Talk-Box at the Pulse Concert in their song "Keep Talking", (from Pink Floyds 1994 album, "The Division Bell). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Whitehouse reference is to Mary Whitehouse, a British teacher who in the 1960s I believe, campaigned against Liberalism and a permissive society. Many of Roger Waters lyrics are full of political references as he was/is a seriously committed liberal, bordering on Leftist imo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pink Floyd has the greatest musical fade-outs ever! Their fade-outs are kind of like their music in a way, they are very patient and deliberate, like their music, they let the music breath, and not rush it.

Whitehouse refers to Mary Whitehouse, a middle aged spoilsport in the 70s who wanted to ban anything she considered shocking. (Which was pretty much everything😉)

The "hyped-up kazoo" you were talking about is called a talkbox. Basically, it's an effect pedal with a plastic tube you connect to your guitar, and while you play, you "talk" into the tube, and it makes the guitar kinda sound like a voice. For another great rock song with talkbox, I highly recommend Hair Of The Dog by Nazareth.

Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh, and Do You Feel Like We Do by Peter😮 Frampton, are probably the two most famous uses of the talkbox in classic Rock. And I believe it makes the voice sound like a guitar, not make a guitar sound like a voice. 😁
