Gilmour played quite of bit of bass on the studio tracks and never was given the credit. I honestly don’t think he cared, or at least felt it wasn’t worth pushing the issue with Roger. David’s fretless bass on Hey You might be my favorite that he plays. Or when he played nearly every single instrument on Fat Old Sun and the re-recording of Money in the early 80s. I often wonder what they would have sounded like without Roger’s input. No the themes and the brilliant lyrics would not have been present. But I think David would have made something different out of them. Maybe more pastoral sounding (like a handful of their early songs were). Maybe more hard rock, because for a brief time in the late 60s they rocked nearly as hard as Sabbath or Zeppelin on a few songs. Proto-Grunge even. They truly did it all.

Notice one thing: every Pink Floyd song is different. And how wide the range of their repertoire is. From lyrical ballads to hard rock burners, country-tinged tracks, a few disco songs to truly psychedelic tracks that will shoot you into another dimension. And everything is instrumentally flawless. When you add clever lyrics to the mix, it's just perfect. I just fucking love it!

Mate, I'm sat here eagerly waiting for your PF reactions and watching them as soon as they drop! And when you've finished, I'm just going, "Brilliant Mark!! DO ANOTHER ONE! DO ANOTHER ONE!!" Love it!! You've nearly done the whole Animals album now. Aside from the two short acoustic bookends (Pigs On A Wing, parts 1&2), you've just got Pigs to do. And I need to warn you, it has some of the angriest lyrics and guitar work in the whole Floyd catalogue... gonna break you, man!! 😁👌🎸❤

Bassist Roger Waters was the band's lyricist for their most commercially successful period, and he wrote the lyrics to the albums around a central concept. For this album, Animals, he was inspired by George Orwell's Animal Farm. The songs are a satire and attack of capitalist Britain, portraying society as dogs (the businessmen who stab everyone, including themselves, in the back before dying alone), pigs (greedy politicians, basically), and sheep (the everyday layman who go along with everything without realizing how bad everything's getting).

It's not for everyone! Stop making it sound like it's some kind of masterpiece! It's for a very niche audience and only very narrow PF fanbase truly appreciates it! It's much harder to get into than into any of their post 60's era stuff! Pink Floyd music only became more accessible (if you can call it that) since Meddle in 1971...nothing that came before will grab average joe's attention!, so stop pretending it's on par with anything PF released since Meddle!...

  • @ianfortier6796

@@Summon256 I definitely agree with you that it's not for everyone and that it for sure should be further down the rabbit hole. I echo your sentiments for all the comments calling for Atom Heart Mother. I grew to love both these songs but that's after burning my way through Meddle and what came later. Without those as a base, these two tracks would have been too out there for me. That being said, the structure and solos David and Rick provide on the 1994 versions of Astronomy push those performances towards the mainstream and thus more accessible than the earlier versions. IMO of course.

  • @alltruenews

@@Summon256 I’ll set aside the gatekeeping and just tell you this story regarding the universality of that song. Astronomy Domine got a lot of radio play in the Boston area in the 80s. I had no idea that it was PF but I fell in love with the song. I was a casual PF fan and only knew their more popular stuff. Then in 1994, I saw them at Gillette Stadium in MA for the Division Bell tour and the opened with that song. I was absolutely stunned!

Before i discovered Animals album for myself the only PF songs i knew and liked were - Another Brick In The Wall, Money and Wish You Were Here! That should tell you everything you need to know to aunderstand how hard it may be for many people to get into more obscure PF stuff...

Love your reactions to the Floyd.. keep em coming!! Most pink Floyd fans are totally with you! We have all been there and reacted the same way! I don’t think people are telling you to listen to albums for any reason other than your own enjoyment! Many Floyd albums are not just a collection of songs but the songs are more like chapters of a book, they make more sense when listening to the full albums. They are all fantastic tracks in their own way and can be enjoyed that way, but the themes explored in the lyrics flow between the tracks and come back with more depth as you listen, drawing you into a different perspective. The insight you get from each song is only a part of what the music does to people, and I think people who are saying that you have to listen to the whole album are saying that for your own enjoyment of the band! If you want to listen to the individual tracks that’s fine too, but the albums give you so much more. Please don’t think I’m hating on you because I love your reactions to the music I grew up listening to. Much love ❤️

I'm 53 and have been a Pink Floyd fanatic since 1979 when I 1st heard The Wall when "Another Brick in the Wall was no.1 Xmas 79 to the New Year 1980 and was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd play live at the iconic Earls Court Pulse Tour concerts which you've reacted to the song Comfortably Numb and Sorrow..!! The majority of fans chose either Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here as their favourite album's but I and many others think Animals is Pink Floyd's GREATEST ALBUM EVER..!! Animals is written by Roger Waters and its homage to George Orwells Animal Farm and the songs on the album Dogs, Pigs (3 Different Ones) and Sheep are lyrically and musically absolutel GENIUS, Roger commentating on the Pigs (ie) The 1% Ruling Classes like Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and so on and Dogs who are the rich businessman full of GREED and trample on anyone who gets in their way and then finally Sheep who are basically US the Common Working Classes who do as they are told and just follow along keeping the Status Quo..!! Roger Waters wrote these lyrics in 1977 and they are as relevant now as they were when he wrote the lyrics warning us about what is happening unless us Sheep rise up and RESIST the ruling elite..!! Roger's lyrics are absolute GENIUS..The musical poet of the last 100years..!! When you really listen to the lyrics of Animals you'll realise how amazing the album is..!! ✌️🫶🏻🙏👌🏻👍🤘

Well you certainly nailed the emotion expressed by the music but suggested by the lyrics - which are so tucked back in the mix. You felt fearful. Yes, the sheep in the paddock need to be aware of the danger surrounding them - Dogs for now and in the future the “valley of steel.” You felt foreboding. Some sheep realise the slaughter at the end of the “well trodden corridors.” You felt elation / freedom. Some sheep choose to leave the mindless path and try something different - thus gaining their freedom. Of course, Dogs, sheep and pigs are all aspects of the human condition when you want to philosophise. Aren’t there really only three types of people…..?? Love your joy. Keep spreading it.

I've always found The Meddle album and Animals would evoke a feeling of bleakness, Autumn or early Winter in me almost like I could smell the damp of autumn the dark nights...something deep , other worldly, but also uplifting that would take me on a journey , whether stoned or sober...those two albums, plus dark side, wish u were here, atom heart mother, the wall, obscured by clouds, Relics....each one an emotional trip.

The voice is going through Richard's Synthesizer and it's the Christain prayer...The lord is my Shepard I shall not want..........I've been a fan since like 1966 and this stuff never gets old and always makes me rock ....you're doing a fantastic job....thank you!

Other progressive rock bands of that era (and British) which you would surely love for their complex instrumentation and “switch ups” (why not!) are Genesis and Yes which have huge catalogs and followings. You’ve also have already mentioned Queen and Rush were on your list who also throw something new in every song. Cheers man! Love your “getting right into it” with PF.

I used your "go with the opposite emotional animal trick" in a crowd or place. It actually worked. Not that I thought you were blowing sunshine up our asses or anything, I mean I expected to notice a difference by using it. I had no idea it would completely flip my script. Not only did it work with the minor discomforts of being publicly somewhere I didn't want to be, but it worked really very well when it came to a very triggering full body pat down in full view of about 50 strangers. I told the cops that I had a bullet behind my knee cap and it would make their weapon scanners go off, yet they searched me, to a level of great discomfort anyways. I'd have ended up in cuffs if I hadn't used your opposite animal thing. Thank you so much. You tube is lucky to have you. We all are.

@@brainsqueezereactions I'm totally fine, thanks to you teaching me how to present myself in stressful situations. If for a moment I could try to explain my honest thanks for how your class has changed my view of being out in the world. Yesterday I had to go to the Social Security building to get a replacement card so I can renew my drivers license. I am rarely in public due to extreme PTSD from an assault that happened in 2009. I entered the building and saw that they had a metal detector everyone had to go through. There were like 30 people ahead of me so as I got closer to the front, I told the police officer that I would most likely make the thing beep due to a 22 bullet that is lodged behind my kneecap, {from getting shot by my husband at the time like 30 years ago}. So I walk through it and it goes off. the male cop on the other side grabs my arm and pulls me to a chair that's in front of the room where everyone is sitting facing me, so they are all watching me get man handled by this ego cop boy. I'm saying to myself over and over "opposite of rhino opposite of rhino" while trying to explain to this man child that I can not remove the metal from my knee. so he has me face the crowd of people raise my arms up and runs his scanner up and down my arms, then waist, then crotch, then legs. He then asks me to sit down and lift both of my legs straight out so he an run his hands up and down my legs. He then takes my shoes, which have no metal at all. The entire time his frustration that he can not locate the metal I'm hiding is obvious not only to me but to the crowd of about by then 50 people. Yet thanks to the self talk in my head, I remain calm. complying to my best ability so I don't make the situation worse. I try joking around with the cop a bit to no avail, though I did make his fellow officer laugh a few times. The man child then has me stand back up turn around and repeats his quest to find my hidden weapon running his scanner up and down my back, my hair, my waist, my ass, the back of my crotch, down both legs. What a f-ing moron. I would not in any way been able to handle that all happening before a crowd of people without your help. The thing I am most grateful for Mark is that for once , the events of the day did not create new trauma. For that I am forever in your debt.

It's a little more than a reciting, it's a reworking of Psalm 23 to fit the core concept of the album and song but you're bang on, in essence. I was wondering if someone had pointed it out yet.

The march of the enlightened sheep when at last "we lowly ones learn the fine art of karate...Bleating and babbling we fell on his (dog's) neck with a scream. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity and into the dreeeeeam."... You got it with only listening to instruments and voices.

Without wanting to turn you away from Pink Floyd which is and will always be my favorite band, but I'm sure you would definitely love the song (Supper's Ready by Genesis). I'm sure you'd be impressed by the transitions that connect the 7 parts that make up this 23+ minute song. To me, Genesis was Pink Floyd's closest rival when it came to musical detail, perfectionists just like the members of Pink Floyd.
