Vocals are guest vocalist Clare Torry This was the second take. First take was words, but although the band didn't know what they wanted, they knew they didn't want words. Then Clare did this!

@@Newfie-zc7ug There's an interview somewhere, where she tells of it - 'I imagined of myself as an instrument playing notes'.... (or something similar)

I don't think they did a whole take - she was just throwing words in, but they knew they just wanted emotion. She said that was the main direction she got, but she had to know about the transitions, too, because she clearly changes tone and emotion like the song dictates.

I agree 100%. Astonishment, sorrow, and wonder all seemed to overtake our young friend, as Pink Floyd does. I am quite new to this channel but marvel at JT’s open mind, curiosity, and knack for summing things up nicely.

PINK FLOYD, "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY". Vocals by Clare Torry. She improvised this one and is one of the most chilling. In regards to one's final moments on their death bed. From the frightened ,angry, feeling helpless screams In the first part of the song. To the submissive realization life is coming to the end. Best brought out by a voice saying "if you can hear this whisper, you're dying". And her voice calming and becomes an echo, ending up in silence with the final piano chord.

Yeah, it's the three phases of life (birth, adulthood, death), but expressed as Trauma, reflection, acceptance. Yet the tonal qualities were expressed as third person, second person, first person as well. If this piece doesn't touch your soul, you don't have one.

I read that when she finished this improvised singing the Band got up and walked out the recording studio. She thought they were disappointed with her and that was the end. Little did she realised they were dumbstruck in amazement

Clare Torry , I'm sure the spirit moved within her , she was asked to do a part using her voice as an instrument . Blew my mind the first time , and most times there after . 👍🇬🇧 Floyd will make you ponder at times ✌️

She was given very little direction, it wass Clare who decided on the 'instrument' - years later she was given writing credits (and a wodge of cash) for the song

She was paid a pittance by Pink Floyd for bearing her soul on that track.. Wasn't until fairly recently that she got an out of court settlement for it.

The crazy thing is Claire Torry was actually embarrassed and wanted to do another take, meanwhile everyone present were completely awestruck by what she did, having to convince her it was perfect. I'm glad she didn't.

Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
