I have a request for you to listen too. You want some ear candy, then listen to Funkadelics - "Maggot Brain" if you have never heard it. Classic brain candy!
The Claire Tory version breathes life into the notes and cries out a profound and deep story.
I think the names of the vocalists were Sam Browne, Claudia Fontaine, and Durga McBroome. All three were great, but the original version with Claire Torre is an absolute masterpiece.
Great gig in the sky is a metaphor for dying... the vocals express the emotions of pain, grief, acceptance and surrender to death. Album version is beautiful. Love the reactions!
The album version with Claire Tory singing bring you on a journey through life, death and afterlife in a way that these women weren't quite able to match. Should definitely listen to the album version.
Studio version is beyond compare !!!! ❤❤❤
Glad you got to experience this but I really appreciate the studio version more than this one...
This is one of the rare occasions where the live peformance is not a patch on the original studio version. Claire Tory does it all in one take and it's beautiful.
This track comes out the album "Dark side of the Moon" (released in 1973) and it's a part of the story told by the album. The tracks flow into each other and talk about the current problems of the life in a chronologic way because it starts of with the birth, war, time, the fear of death (with Great gig in the sky !!!), money, relationships with others, mental health ... I hardly recommand you to listen to this album in its entirety or, at least, to listen to the tracks in order. You are going to love it, I'm pretty sure. You have listened to "Dogs" of the "Animals" album, this one speaks about bussinessmen (Dogs), politicians (Pigs) and the compliant people (Sheep) in the order I just wrote you. You have a lot to listen to from Pink Floyd and from other bands of the 1970's (Genesis, Supertramp, Yes, Led Zeppelin ...)
if they don't play this at my funeral, i'm not going.
There's a time for live and a time for the original recording, this was a time for the original.
This is the first time you haven't "got it" when it comes to Pink Floyd reviews. Thanks for listening and appreciating the music, but this is an entire story in music. It's a novel in emotional release, a lifetime of living and an acceptance of destiny. All without a single lyric. I'm not sure any other musical talent could have done this.
Good stuff but yeah should have done the album version featuring Clare Torrie who simply did an improvised vocal a few times and that is what you get on the album...amazing.
I get goose bumps every time that I hear this, and yes the original album version is the best but my goodness these ladies do it justice!!!
Dark side of the Moon album is now in the hall of fame& will be played forever like Beethoven& Mozart. This poster hung on my bedroom wall as a teenager& I still can’t believe it’s 50 yrs old 😳masterpiece. PF are gods ❤
Sam Brown - backing vocals, first vocalist on "The Great Gig in the Sky" (had a massive hit with "Stop!"). Durga McBroom - backing vocals, second vocalist on "The Great Gig in the Sky" (had a hit with Blue Pearls "Naked in the rain"), Claudia Fontaine - backing vocals, third vocalist on "The Great Gig in the Sky"
The way the soul feels when life ends
Been waiting for this. This song is about death! The back story of Claire Tory coming up with it on the spot, in the studio is legendary!!!
Many people have already commented how you should have listened to the original version --- preferably in a whole album reaction to "The Dark Side of the Moon" --- and I agree, but I'd just like to point out that they needed THREE singers to try to *approximate* --- not replicate --- what Claire Torry did ALONE improvising in that studio. And Claire APOLOGISED for her performance, which she thought was not good! She had simply made history and created a masterpiece!

This! Peace/JT
My understanding is this song is representative of the different stages of dying and death… fighting it, starting to give in, then finally quietly, peacefully relenting. Thus the great gig in the sky…death.
Pink Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright wrote this song, which is about life, gradually descending into death. Hence the angrier and more intense first half with a dying person refusing to "go gently into that good night." The second half is gentler, as the dying person gives into the inevitable and fades away. This is "The Great Gig in the Sky" meaning.

That's just a copy and paste... Comfortably numb live please, I know you can do it 💪
Loved you reaction! I suggest you listen to Time next. But make sure you listen to the Studio Version and really focus on the lyrics
Floyd makes concept albums. You are missing the concept if you don't listen in track order. The Wall is a Rock Opera. Animals is loosely based on Orwells Animal Farm.
Another journey with Floyd. Relax and enjoy
I'm glad you finally reacted to this amazing masterpiece.
Pink Floyd is just NOT normal music! This is just a small piece of the epic album, Dark Side of the Moon. If ever there was a reason to do an Album reaction, this should give you all the motivation you need to give it a try, an amazing concept album about universal themes like Time, Death, Money, Conflict and Sanity, it is essential listening for anyone who thinks they like Pink Floyd. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶
As someone said though, you really should listen to the album first of this
This song, as with all of the others on Dark Side need to be listened to in the context of the whole album. Dark Side of the Moon explores the feeling and meaning behind all life experiences, which human emotions are triggered by them and how the 7 deadly sins envy, gluttony, greed or avarice, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath can influence them. A lot of people interpret The Great Gig in the Sky an instrumental and vocal expression of the five stages of dying denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Words wouldn't have done it justice because this is a highly emotional time in someone's life. On the album version Claire Tory sings the vocals on the entire song and she did it in two takes. She was unsure about what she had done and got very little feedback from the band. They simply told her what she did was fine and there was no need for further recording. She initially got paid 30 pounds for her work, which was the standard fee for a session musician at the time. Because the vocal part was her own material, however, she did eventually sue the band for writing credit and won an undisclosed amount. The album version is easily one of the most iconic songs in all of music history and is well worth a re-listen.
Her vocals are out of this World... appropriate for the album. (original singer was Clare Torry) These ladies do a great job I really enjoy how you've embraced Pink Floyd and all their splendor
Have to listen to the original studio version of this
Claire Tory has earned our respect as the co-creator and master performer of this piece of amazing art. Peace/JT
To me the vocal delivery and emotion seems to follow stages of death... denial, then anger, then acceptance. Stunning song
I was the first one gere in the channel who asked for this reacton. Thank you very much, bro!
Two emotional and beautiful voice solo's. Studio version is also amazing 🍮
Awww man, I wish you had reacted to the album version as it's FAR superior to this one. The studio version is my favorite song of all time. It's perfect.
when you hear this song in context, it all makes sense. this album is meant to be heard in it's entirety in one sitting. your all ready in the mood before this one blows your mind.
Yeah hi Sevsimo did someone request this live performance? Because you've you picked the wrong version buddy. You really need to hear the audio version first because the audio version is sung by one single person - woman named Clare Tori. She stands head and shoulders above the live versions, fortunately. I would seriously suggest you check that out. But I really appreciate you looking into this song, it's one of their classics, and when you hear the original you'll understand why. Well done for the reaction and will catch you on the flipside hopefully in Cronulla. What the story is here, is that this is a song from around the middle of the album Dark Side of the Moon. It's probably the most famous album ever produced ever. It was on the Billboard 200 charts for more than 900 weeks which is something like 14 years or something. And the album is all meant to be listen to in its entirety in one sitting, which is something you could really look at doing. You'd sit and record it all the way through and then you might release the songs individually in their order on KZread, which others have done. I suggest you seriously consider doing this, because the album treats, or kind of makes comment on the human condition on life. It makes comments on Birth, the busyness of life, how time in passes, and on death, which is what this song is all about. The second side of the record, because it was produced in 1973, was actually released on vinyl, the second side deals more with the pressure off Money, its the influences on a persons psyche and how that might impact person to become insane. This is a reflection of what happened to the former band member Syd Barrett. So it's a very personal album for the band as is their next album Wish You Were Here, which includes the song you listened to: Shine On You Crazy Diamond. I hope the steers you in the right direction, and that you can consider doing a full sitting of the album dark side of the Moon. People have done it before and released it all in its entirety and gotten away with it so I think you should be able to do that too. Cheers

@@sevsimomy man, haven’t read all the comments, but I’ll say the way to experience PF’s absolute classic Dark Side of the Moon album is too listen start to finish, from the opening “Speak to Me” to the closing “Eclipse” - or like I did as a teenager… with headphones 🎧 on, side one of the vinyl LP which takes you up through the original “Great Gig in the Sky” which is f’kn sublime. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼 Whether u get to do it as a reaction or not, please treat yourself to the whole journey that is DSOTM. ✌🏼
This version is ok, they did their best but it doesn't come nowhere near Clare Tory's original studio version, there have been several attempts over the years by different singers to recreate this emotive masterpiece, but through no fault of their own have never been able to capture the raw powerful and emotional meaning of this song, and also, the difficulty in recreating it is the fact that all the vocals were improvised, in a later interview by Clare she said that she tried to improvise using words, but it wasn't the sound they were looking for so she thought of herself as an instrument, and the rest is history✌
This is Grief the realisation of dying acceptance & release, listen to the album version one singer Clare Torrey Epic SHE Nailed it the clue is in the voice talking during the Intro!! But take time to listen to the whole album in one go all will be revealed?? Keep up the good work I raise my coffee cup to you!!
Believe it or not, the studio version, with one incredible singer, is even better.
Would love to see your reaction on Coming back to life and Sorrow both Pulse version
The righteous Brothers soul and inspiration
Although this version is great, the studio version is definitive. Still glad to see you reacting to this one!
The song deals with death. Specifically, your own death. The speaker at the beginning of the song describes how he is not frightened of dying. The three verses represent the anger and rage of being confronted with the reality of your situation. The second verses is sadness that your life is coming to an end. The third verse reflects acceptance of your natural fate as the singer slowly fades into the distance. It is a beautiful piece of art. I encourage you to listen to it again. Also, there is a buried lyric in the song which indicates that if you can hear it, you are already dying.
DSotM is a concept album that was designed to be listened to in its entirety from start to finish, and with each song blending into the next (apart from when us old farts had to flip the vinyl over after Side 1). The overall message is greater than the sum of its individual songs, so I urge you to tackle the entire album, rather than random tracks from the album. Cheers.
The girl singing are three faces of life, the first girl singing is a young person, being bold, living life large. The second woman is singing that she has learned about life, and that she sees the lessons in life. The third woman is coming to grips of her passing And the things that she remembers in her life and then at the end, her passing.
The more I hear this, the more i am amazed that Clare Torrey Accomplished what now can be analyzed as the stages of death in the various stages. How did she do it, in 2 takes. Did she do what she did knowing the title beforehand, or not. Did PF name it after the fact? Whatever, this has certainly become a phenomenon, hasn't it? And, most reactors don't seem to know that the term gig in the sky is like when you go to heaven. That was easily known by everyone 50 years ago when this was created. If these people reacting to this knew beforehand that the song was about death, Most would have quite a more profound reaction.
Floating up to the next level
The Blonde Lass is Sam Brown, her old man is Joe Brown actor singer from the 60s - 70s (was in the Cliff Richard movies).
This is a song written by Rick Wright and original singer Clare Torry gets co-writing credits. The song was mean to be about the various stages of death from anger to acceptance. This is rock, but it's also art. Actually, GREAT art.
oh and by the way, i believe that on the original album version that Clair does all the vocals on her own, stunning. i've heard the word transcendent used to describe the listening experience. i would tend to agree.

Yes, Clare does all of the vocalizing on the original.😊
Nothing beats Pink Floyd thanks
I know everyone has their opinions on this version or the studio version. Both are absolutely beautiful, amazing, heart wrenching, haunting.... When I first started listening to Pink Floyd, I would skip this track on Dark Side of the Moon. I just didn't get it. At some point it clicked and it became one of my favorite Floyd songs. When the Pulse live album came out, I was completely blown away by this version. It is my favorite version, but the original holds a special place in my heart because it was a fundamental part of my journey to being more open minded when it comes to music. Thanks for another great reaction. I love joining people as they discover new (to them) music.
I agree with the others that you need to listen to the studio version on the album. The vocalist is Clare Torry, and it was all her improvisations to the music track that gave us Great Gig in the Sky. Have plenty of coffee and your candle ready...
First vocalist is Sam Brown, there is a possibility you might have heard her song "Stop!" in the past already. She was pretty famous in Turkey at that time. I watched her interview on KZread early this year, found she had really hard times when she lost her voice in 2007.
enjoy the studio version also for sure dude
Album version
Prima di ascoltare le versioni live si deve conoscere quella di studio da DSOTM 🙂
This song represents the raw emotion of the transition into leaving life, stages of dying, first denial, anger, fear, resistance and finally acceptance, these Ladies do it well, But the original version by Claire Tory on the album is something that touches the Heart, Spirit and Soul, it is unforgettable and it's Awesome !! The Only way to get the full enjoyment from all Pink Floyd, is to listen with headphones or ear buds, a radio or stereo system is good, but with headphones or ear buds it's the ultimate journey !!

I don't think you'll see anyone on here suggesting that he should have done the live version of this song 1st. The consensus is pretty solid... The original studio version with the original singer was the proper way to go.
Keep dive in Pulse concert...Sorrow is my recomendation..
The song is all about the stages leading up to death from being told to acceptance
not one word was said... yet OH... what she sang.
Yes, you have to listen to the original. Clare Tory is the creator of this. Even the band didn't know exactly what they wanted when they had her in to record. She was warming up and they said basically do that but think about death and the stages you go through concerning it. What followed is epic and emotional. The girls that follow in concert try but they just can't recreate what was done on Abby Road way back when. Even my husband can tell the difference and while he enjoys music, he isn't overly "musical".
Good but man, the studio version is so much better. I’d recommend any new PF song be listened to in the studio version. Then live…
I was excited to see you react to this, then completely disappointed you didn't do the original studio version. I've heard many live versions, but none even come remotely close to the original. Do yourself a favor and do DSOTM in its entirety.
You must listen to the studio version of this song. A thousand times better. I cried the first time I heard it.
Do the album version!!! Please!!!
The great gig in the sky is death. The song reflects the various stages towards death until the final acceptance. Even though you initiate yourself in Pulse, this is one rare example of a Pink Floyd song that is better in the Dark Side and not live. Because is Claire Torry singing it.
This version is fine, but Clare Torrey's legendary album version is without a doubt one of the greatest vocal improvisations of all time. Definitely check it out.
Ok guy, when you listen to Floyd. You have to: 1. Listen to the entire album in one shot. 2. Pink Floyd makes concept albums. There is a story to be told. 3. Now you can listen to individual songs because now you know what they mean.
This one you should definitely have done the album version 1st. One amazing singer and she nails it.
Listen to the album version with Claire Torrey. The best version
nah, it was the album version, not the live one.
Oh no, you listened to a live version instead of the studio! Nothing compares with the studio version. And for a track as incredible as this one, you should really retry with the studio version.

The Isley Brothers shout
... I believe this is a Requiem /funeral mass. Listen the the spoken words on the album "I'm not afraid to die ... any time'll do, we all gotta go some time... " and the whisper "if you can hear this you are dying". On the album the agony of the vocal track is much more apparent
