always felt that this was the initial struggle not to die, then the acceptance and euphoria afterwards - I agree this is my funeral song - then let everyone guess what is meant by it.

The entire album flows from one song to another, like one giant song. This is indeed one of those albums that are worth checking it out in its entirety.

“Good lord is that an angel singing?” Yes, it is an angel named Clair Tory; this was the second take she did. It was improvised and later Pink Floyd gave her a writing credit on the album for this song.

Just do yourself a HUGE favour and listen to the entire Dark Side Of The Moon in one sitting. Divide it into two video's, side A and side B. Have the lyrics with you. It will literally change your life.

What is most first when you want to feel Pink Floyd, its to listen their albums as one piece. Remember to do that after you collect a several songs of them at your YT channel.

She was told to express dying without using any words. Her vocals represent the five stages of death. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Which explains the various intensities and tones she uses.

The front side of the album is a journey through life. It all flows together like one big song. Sit down and listen to it straight through. This is the last song. This song is death. It goes from the initial realization of what’s happening with fear, denial, reluctant acceptance, and then peace.

You have a very balanced and fair approach to life! I have a feeling that we all comprise all of those conditions in people you mentioned, just in varying degrees and times. There are times when I don't really want to face life, and times when I feel really good about it. But that's my own bipolar nature. I don't know about anyone else. Which also is more along the lines of Zen yin yang principles than Christianity. I also feel that we take our energy with us into an eternal life, and that we have the ability to control it through positive living and our day to day experience. Conditioning our spiritual awareness for the afterlife and eternity.

Interesting that it was written to represent death, because when I heard it for the first time (in the mid-70s when I was a teenager), I thought it represented sex. I couldn't make out the words spoken at the beginning, so I was basing it solely on the music and the singer's vocalization. I guess I should have known it was about death based on the song's title, but I must have missed that at the time.

I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering, anguish and despair caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We couldn't tell Clare so she wouldn't say anything to the media. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
