Pike Push Up - Your Bodyweight Overhead Pushing Progression
Pike push ups or downward handstand dog push ups are great to get you started with overhead pressing strength.
Working on your pike push ups will help you build shoulder and triceps strength for handstand push ups, planches, 90 degree push ups and basic 2 arm handstand shapes.
Even though pike push ups are rather basic I see many mistakes when athletes perform them without first properly analyzing the movement.
1 - you should be moving on a diagonal line. Your shoulders should take the same path on the way back up as they took on the way down.
2 - look at your hands on top of the movement and keep weight and control in your hands. Do not lock out pushing your chest towards the feet. I see this all the time and it honestly doesn’t make any sense. Pike push ups are a handstand push up progression. Treat them accordingly.
3 - do not arch your back on the way back up. If you can not perform pike push ups without arching your back scroll through my page for the “dreaming of doing a handstand push up?” short.

Is it flexibility or strength? Are you able to bend over 90 degrees when standing? If yes, then you can do this, you might have to modify it at the beginning. If no, then you have to work at strengthening/stretching your hip flexors first to be able to bend and hold.

That’s a great start. You could consider elevating your feet and each hand on 1 yoga block so you can go lower to build a strength reserve before going back up

@@CoachBachmann That’s a great idea, especially with the yoga block and placing it under the hands too. I’ve been putting my feet up on a fitness step (lowest setting). I can guarantee each one of those eccentric reps are a challenge!

@@stuart2151 elevating the feet higher than the feet shifts the weight into the hands more which is great. Elevating the hands allows you to go deeper. Combine both for ultimate gains ;)

Make sure to get proper rest days in and try doing minute long dead hangs if you aren't already. Helped my shoulder pain a bunch. other than that, try finding other overhead push exercises. Sometimes our bodies just hate certain movements :/

sounds like you are allowing your back to arch. Work on protracting your shoulders more to keep your upper back slightly rounded. You might also simply not be strong enough yet for pike push ups. Start with negatives.
My legs just kinda gives out much faster than my arms. Any advice?

Focus on your alignment. Focus on your form. Check the placement of your feet and hands in the floor. You can also film yourself to see where you’re off.

The focus here shouldn’t be stretching the calves. We really want to be able to focus on the shoulders and arms. I recommend you bend your knees slightly and pt your feet coming up on your tippy toes. This will allow you to feel a bit less of a stretch!

Plenty work up exercises. You can do a military press against the elastic band. You can do partial pike push ups. Place a yoga block or similar between your hands to reduce the distance you have to travel. You can now either tap the block with your nose or lower down until a headstand. Rest the center of the top of your head on the block, place your knees on the floor, extend the arms and extend the legs. You are back to your starting position

Yeah there are plenty of progressions actually. An easy one: put a pillow between your hands and do slow negatives. Once the head is down pop your knees on the floor, extend your arms, extend your legs and you’re back to your starting position ready to go again. Just make sure you tuck your head in. Don’t put your forehead on the pillow but the center of the top of your head
