That's a neat little '60 you have there! I did the Kirst conversions on my '51 and '60. I left the loading lever on mine, cuz I like to shoot the C&B cylinders as well. Luckily the cylinder on the '60 was timed perfectly. The '51 I had to work on a bit to get both cylinders timed.

Thanks for the lesson on how to safely use the cylinder. There are many cowboy action nuts who fill in the safety notch on the hammer, and remove the between the chamber, drop safety, on the percussion cylinder. The prevailing thought for cowboy action is to NOT learn how to use the built in drop safety features.

@@INeverMetAGunIDidntLike then my next question is-could that be done at home? Just find 2-3 spots in the loading gate plate that have nothing structural, that matches up with a solid piece of the frame and drill and tap with a flush set screw. It would get rid of the extra noise, and make reloading alot easier. Also does the standard 1860 barrel fit on the frame? And could a standard barrel with an ejector rod be cut down to usable size? Just spitballing here...

@@thechonkersking2647 I guess I guy could anchor the plate to the frame, I personally am not bothered by the plate jiggling around some. I tried to switch barrels with my older Pietta standard 1860 Army and they would not interchange. An ejection rod would be awful short for this model, maybe too short. You may want to look into a 1860 Richards conversion by Uberti, standard size revolver. They are pretty nice.

hey there! another youtube comment section expert here haha. for a while i shot my navy with the wedge as loose as yours. I was told to make sure i used a mallet to tap in the wedge and it improved my accuracy 10 fold. i dont know if your accuracy is poor, but if so i highly recommend you give that wedge a little tap. you shouldnt be able to remove it with thumb strength. i would bet your accuracy will improve. nice gun!

Good video. I just got a Taylor's/Howell conversion cylinder for my 1860s but it's giving me trouble in my Armys. It works in my 1851 .44 'navy' but this is making me wish I got the Kirst instead.

  • @whatsmolly5741

Same, got the howell .44 for my pietta army and it just locks up and doesn't cycle all. Eventually figured out the 2020 pietta bolts were filed to fit and Howells close enough wasn't close enough any more. Got another bolt and filed it until I could cycle all 5 rounds but 1 of the rotations took alot more filing than the other 4 and it cycles fine but I can spin the cylinder out of place by hand. Howell said it's piettas fault but obviously the grooves on the cylinder arnt uniform since it locks up fine with 2 of them and doesn't with the other 3, also the original works fine even with the filing. Also have a 1851 navy but it's a 2020 like my army and it does the same thing.

If you aren’t handy can send it to Kirst gunsmith and have the work done. Reasonable. These are popular for a few reasons. No paperwork on the revolver. Let’s you shoot a blackpowder revolver with smokeless powder cartridges. Last you can travel with the revolver as a blackpowder revolver almost anywhere in an RV , and assemble as a cartridge revolver where legal. Pair it up with a same caliber 45 lever rifle and you are heeled

It is still recommended to fire black powder loaded cartridges in these cylinders, however, they are rated to mild or what are described as “cowboy loads”......cartridges with lead bullets loaded to Cowboy Action Shooting velocities. Also, do not fire jackets bullets. Don’t know why, it is just said not to do it.

It sounds like the new cylinder needs to be fitted to the revolver. I am not the one to advise on fitting the cylinder. I would consult a gun smith that specializes in this field. The gun smith for Kirst, if he is still there, was very friendly whenever I had questions. You might try calling him.

Hi I have a brand new Pietta 1860 Army Snub Nose Revolver .44 caliber. My question is, there's no problem with converting from .44 cal. to .45 cal.? I was planning to buy the Kirst with the gate to convert to .45 Schofield cartridges (Cowboy Ammo) so my only concern is with the barrel, it does not have to be changed? I was told by Kirst that the barrel can stay as-is with no change. Is that correct? I just assume that .44 to .45 would be larger in diameter. Hope you can answer my question, Thanks :)

Correct, you do not need to change the barrel. I use .454 round balls in my .44 cal revolvers (it will shave a small ring off of them when loading) and the .45 Colt bullets are usually .452 diameter.
