Thank you. That is kind of one of the reasons I started doing these. Not that my videos are great, but there are a lot of bad ones out there! I want to see a video of how these things actually perform and handle, so I figured might as well make my own! I haven't seen any of these for sale for months now. Hopefully Pietta will run another batch soon.

that brass rod make a dandy wedge tool, wad seating and, with the correct patch and a chamber wipe between loads cleaning tool. My snubby is the original .44 caliber with the Navy scene in the cylinder. Those bird head grips were ditched for 1860 Army grips. I found that the bird head would not index for me it was like trying to index a mop handle. Neat gun thanks for your work doing these videos.

Thank you. I guess I shouldn't dismiss that rod so quickly - I guess it does have some usefulness. I have another snubbie 1860 with the standard Army grips as well. I have plans to do a video with that one also and see how it compares with the birds head gripped one.

your videos are always right down my alley.iv got the ace and the 51 navy in .44.next snub is the 60 in white steel from taylors(if it comes in stock,that is).maybe you can do some chronograph with your various snubbies with various charges and even projectiles and see how they stack up against their respective full length versions?

They can be very accurate. The limiting factor with these is the small and hard to see sights - they're no where near as good as the sights on modern pistols.

@@mrmcbeth I'm sure someone has - at some point. It would be interesting to see what kind of accuracy you could really wring out of one of these by using an optic sight.

I received one of these for Christmas. Mine doesn’t have the fluted cylinder though, it is the standard 1860 Army with the engraved cylinder / navy battle scene. I shot mine a couple weeks ago using pyrodex pellets / 30 grain. It was easy and clean to load, but for accuracy, I felt it needed to be dialed down to 25 grains. I enjoyed your video.

Thank you. Most of the .44's I've used seem to do best in the 20 - 25gr of powder range, though others may prefer more. You just won't know until you try!

As your powder charge increases, increase the weight of the projectile. That’s what works for me. With my 1860 snub I use a 240 grain bullet and 35 grains of 4F, and find it to be very accurate as long as I keep the pressure consistent when seating the bullet in the chamber. The faster burning powder combined with the heavier bullet allows it to fully combust the charge in such a short barrel. Velocity doesn’t suffer as much either, sending the slug down range at ~830ft/s. Making a very formidable little pocket sledgehammer.

With my 1860 I can rip off 6 in no time flat. They are a joy to shoot. I prefer conicals and get the best groups with Pyrodex P. Great job and solid video. 👍

I ust got the snub nose version back in March this year. I went with the silver version by Pietta and it's gorgeous. I put in a Wolf round wire trigger/bolt spring and light hammer spring. I also installed Slixshot nipples and I use little tiny pieces silicone tubing that I slip over the caps. It helps hold the cap together and in place, plus helps keep Florida's humidity out. So far I've haven't had any fall off before or after it's been fired and no pieces fall into the action. I literally have to pull them back off of the nipples with a plastic pick.

I really like the silver version as well, and if they become available again I may pick one of those up also. I had a stock trigger/bolt spring break on me not long ago, in a revolver that hasn't really seen much use. I may try some of those Wolff springs next time. I understand they are a lot more durable than the stock ones.

For some reason, Pietta calls even their .36 caliber version of this an 1860. The birds head grips feel really good to me and seem to fit my hands very well.

It's funny to me that I am willing to forgive the caliber shenanigans but get fired up over the grip frame sizes. And I don't know what to call this beautiful abortion of mixed parts but I love it. Lol.

We often have defects like damaged carcasses, scratches, screw holes drilled too close to the edge of the carcass? They are often suspected of sending the finest copies to the much larger American market! I really like your caps and balls videos. THANKS.

@@peuplierargente6827 Thank you. Yes, there are complaints about the quality of some of the Pietta revolvers we get here, too. We have one large online retailer here called Midway USA. They usually sell a lot of Pietta products much cheaper than many other places. There have been many complaints about revolvers people have received from Midway, and some people have speculated the reason they can sell them so cheaply is that they buy up Piettas "rejects" and sell them off here. So far, I have had very good luck with the revolvers I have bought, and they have all been very nice, except one or two that needed a little work to function the way they should. So Piettas lack of quality control seems to be pretty universal. Best you can do I guess is to buy from reputable sellers, and hope they take returns if you get one that isn't up to par.

Shooting a Colt type of revolver, you should know about the Colt roll between shots to prevent cap jam. The cap jam was one of the design weakness of the Colt revolver. Did it happen with others??????

Sounds like a pretty neat little revolver!

I bought a pair of those back in May. Haven't fired them yet. I notice they don't have much recoil/velocity/power. Duelist chrono'd his at a miserable 525 feet/per/sec.(.25 ACP power) I searched the world and found the ORIGNAL Lyman Black Powder Reloading Manual from 1970 because it had data for loading .451 round ball over 36 WEIGHED grains of FOUR-Fg Swiss powder. 8500 psi, 1350 feet-per-sec from an 8" barr'l. I think our strong little 3" barreled guns will really benefit from full loads of FFFFg.

I've read from some people that all they use is 4F - in everything - even rifles. Haven't tried it yet myself, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work just fine in these revolvers.

Taylor himself inventor of the Taylor Knock Down Formula said it was more accurate on very large animals - but that Kinetic Energy is a better predicter of killing power on smaller beasts. Therefore one should "go" with kinetic energy every time - but at close range "all other things being equal" (which they never are) then slug diameter is a plus. Do you want (each powder charge weighed, not measured, mind you) loading data for 4F powder in those weapons? If you are serious I will look them up in my old Lyman Manual and list them here. You are welcome.

@@billcarson1465 Absolutely. The .36 isn't a very powerful revolver, and the .31 even less so. Given a choice between the three calibers, I'd take the .44 all day - regardless of barrel length.

Which snub nose would you recommend. Looking at the Pietta "yank" or the 1860 I really like the bird head grip. I might go towards an Ace or something else if I could get a recommendation. What caliber also?

That's a good question, and I don't have a short answer. If I could choose only one, I would go with the Ace. I'm more partial to the Remingtons, and I have had far fewer reliability issues with them compared to the Colts. Also, they are easier to use with a conversion cylinder if you decide to go that route. Having said that, I think the Colts look nicer, and I am also partial to the birds head grips - I find them very comfortable to hold and shoot. As for caliber, even though I do like the .36, I would go with a .44, again because of versatility. It's pretty easy to download a .44 for new shooters or small game, and then load it to the hilt for more serious matters, but a .36 can just never be a very powerful caliber no matter what. There is probably a lot more I could get into comparing and contrasting these revolvers, but I think I covered the highlights. Hope it helps in your decision.

I love this little gun. Tell me. Are you sold on using the Remington #11.

They are good caps, and seem to fit well (this revolver, at least). Unfortunately, they are nearly impossible to find right now. Most people say they prefer the Remington #10's because the tend to fit just about every revolver, but again - not really available right now.

I just bought one of these, and cant get the pin to release so i can remove the barrel and cylinder, is there a trick i dont know?? Thanks!

Simple solution - get both!

I noticed this 1860 pistol does not have the cutouts on the side for the "shoulder stock". Most of the ones i have seen, have the cutouts, along with the 4th screw. I like the look of a 3 screw with no cutouts on this snubby. Is this a newer version of the 1860 snubnose 44 ? Where can i find this exact model ?

This is an older model from a few years ago. I haven't seen any of the newer models in person, but in all the photos I've seen the new ones have the cutouts and the 4th screw. So I think if you want one without those things, you might have to keep an eye out for a used one.

Normal I’d be confused as to why someone would use a special loading bench tool like that, but without a loading lever I get it.

My favorite model got 60 44 cal and 51 36 cal, I’m actually going to get left hand cross draw belt for the 51 the 60 I got in a doc should holder… getting drop in conversation then I have to change out the bird head grins w aged ivory… I love the hide out gambler guns… I just need a 7in … probably a new army or 1873 cattle man… I’d love to get a Lamat w the 20gauge angle but for 1300 I’d buy the side by side hawdoya Or the stage coach… I’m a felon non violent by the way…but I grew up hunting w my g-pa and I miss it badly

The 1873 Cattlemen are great - I like mine a lot! I'd like a LeMat someday as well, but the price is far too high to justify. The Coach guns are awfully nice, too. I will be doing videos on them at some point. Hope you check them out when I get them done!

I'm in the same boat and all my firearms are muzzleloaders. Rather than the godawful expensive Howdah or a LeMat, you should look at one of the modern muzzleloading double pistols made by AGC. I have the 11-inch barreled double 12 gauge Desperado and I love it, but for general carry and use I'd recommend you go with the 8-inch instead. The 6-inch Diablo pistols are extremely handy but the barrels are too short and waste a lot of powder without ever getting to a power level that justifies burning all that powder. My Desperado is the very first weapon I'd grab if someone was kicking my door in. I keep it loaded with about 70 grains of 777 and an ounce of #4 buck in each barrel. I love traditional "sawed-off" shotguns but the AGC pistols are modern in design and construction, tough, and reliable. I especially like that it uses 209 primers instead of traditional percussion caps. As a test I once fired my Desperado soaking wet in a fierce Louisiana rain storm and both barrels lit off with no problem even though the gun had water running out of the innards when I brought it inside. Like both of you I too love the LeMat -- it was designed and manufactured originally in Louisiana, my home state -- but at $1300+ retail there's just no way in hell I'm ever going to buy one as anything except a collector's item and display piece. For the price I could instead have an AGC Desperado in each hand, ready to face down anything and anyone that walks the earth.

Remember - it’s better to “ring steel” than “steal rings”!!! Nice gun. But power is limited because of that short barrel, regardless of powder charge, as that short barrel can EXTRACT only what that short bore allows it to! But this gun would certainly be a “stopper” regardless! I’ll take one poleaze! “Gesundheit”!

@@johnzx6r Using less of a faster burning powder seems like the logical thing to do given the "mortar-like" bore-to-barrel-length proportions of these handy little self defense tools. Couple days ago I learned that there used to be FIVE Fg powder used way back when. It was called "cartridge powder" because if poured directly into a revolver chamber mouth it all just poured out of the nipple opening. But it worked fine in the paper cartridges commonly used back then. I had never heard of the stuff and pretty sure nobody makes it anymore.

I don't think there is much more recoil to this than there is with a full-size .44 revolver. It is noticeably louder, though.

The .36 cal pistol you displayed is actually a replica of a Colt 1861 navy witch were chambered in .36 caliber. It’s not an 1860. Great video.

The top,

.36 caliber was considered the "navy" caliber and thus the 1851 and 1861 Colt Navy pistols. .44 was the "army" caliber so you have the Remington 1858 New Army and the 1860 Colt Army.

Just the way I've trained myself to shoot. I can isolate the sights with just my right eye, and kind of ignore whatever the left eye sees. Keeping both eyes open lessens the eye muscle strain and fatigue. Your body was never really designed to keep only one eye closed for an extended period of time. Your eyes generally want to be both open or both closed, and trying to keep just one or the other open puts a lot of effort on some tiny muscles around your eyes.

Right now, these things are running about $400 - $450.

How deep would this pierce through flesh? Since it has such a short barrel I wonder if it still has enough stopping power.

Frankly, I'm not sure. I have not put this one over a chronograph yet, but going off of similar barrel lengths I assume that this would be around 650 - 700 fps with a 140gr. ball. Sill plenty of oomph to make someone have a very bad day if hit by it, in my opinion.

Considering the damage an 8 inch .44 does, even if you halve that it is still more than deadly, so long as you are familiar with the sights.

Well, wasn't done on purpose! Though the first shots out of a new gun, you never know what to expect!

Your 36 caliber snub is an 1861/62. The 1861 Navy didn't have the stepped cylinder that the 1851 Navy did. Your snub doesn't have a stepped cylinder, so it is, indeed an 1862 (or 1861). The 1862 "police" model was a 5 shot 36 made on the 31 frame, and it does have a stepped cylinder, but it's a noticeably smaller gun.

The 11's seemed to work better in this revolver. 10's tend to run a bit smaller, and don't always fit well on some revolvers. 11's are more readily available right now, and 10's have been hard to find. If you can get both, it wouldn't hurt to try each of them and see which one works best. If all you have are 11's, it's often a good idea to upgrade the stock nipples to ones from SliXshot or Track of the Wolf. These companies make nipples specifically for the #11 caps, and the revolver usually works more reliably with them.

Using black powder and round ball, I have found that my 1860 is more accurate than my ACE. But when using a .45 Colt cartridge conversion cylinder, the ACE is quite a bit more accurate.

Boy, that is a tough question. I really prefer Remingtons over the Colts. But if I were forced to choose between this and the Ace, I think I would pick this. It is just "sleeker" and less clunky than the Ace, and it feels better balanced when shooting. You got me thinking - maybe I'll do a head-to-head comparison video of the two.

Does Pietta Make These In .38/357 & What's The Price ???

Not Pietta, but Uberti makes something similar that they call their Hickok Conversion. It looks similar to this revolver, but it has a full grip instead of the bird's head grip. It is listed on Taylor's website for about $660 in .38 Special, but it is out of stock at this time. Taylor's also has the .36 caliber version of the percussion revolver in the video for sale for $440, and a .38 Special conversion cylinder for it for $230. Both of these items are in stock at Taylor's right now.

We all know to shoot a Colt type of revolver, reliably shot after shot, you should roll the revolver to the left ( if you are a right handed shooter ) to help rid the spent cap. Otherwise the cap will bind up the revolver. Good video other than that.

Good insightful thoughtful video. Way to go! Those Pietta 1860 Snub nosed percussion revolvers are nice. If you want the ultimate in power out of your Steel Framed Percussion revolvers. Then check out my invention of RFN Universal Bullets. I designed my Universal Bullets for Hunting and Wilderness defensive purposes of apex predator animals in mind. One of my Universal Bullet Customer's, who has the 1851 44 snub nose revolver version, loaded it with 30 grains of Pyrodex P Powder and my 240 grain RFN Universal Bullet cast of Clip On Wheel weight Lead. He loaded it with use of the Tower of Power Loading Press and test fired , it into an Oak Tree within 20 yards, my 24o grain Universal bullets penetrated 5 inches to that Oak tree, which he retreived , by cutting out the bullets. I recommend that all Colt stale open top percussion revolvers have taller sights mounted on as well as to deepen and open up the rear hammer sight with a fine triangle shaped file and spot blue the enlarged sight afterwards. For mounting taller sights and reaming /chamfering cylinders, cutting Forcing Cones, Pinning Arbor Pins, enlarging Loading Ports and all other improvements, I highly recommend the services of Master Black Powder Gunsmith ,Mr. Dykes Reber, of the muzzleloadershop.com located in Berryville Arkansas. I was having better luck with #11 in this revolver.

Use that for CCW. Get assaulted pull and fire. Vanish like a ninja in the cloud of smoke!

I have noticed in both this vid and the one you did with the Remington snub nose... your finger is too far into the trigger. You should put only your finger tip on the trigger. Then see how accurate you are... as well as shaving front site.

I've tried many different techniques over the years, and using more finger on the trigger seems to work best for me.

I do use a dowel to fully seat the caps. This revolver didn't have any real issues with the caps - only the one that cased the mis-fire when a spent cap fell between the hammer and the frame. This is a common issue with the Colt style revolvers regardless of which caps are used.

Why do people insist on removing the wedge screw on a colt?😤 The screw retains the wedge and you should be able to push it out with your thumb!

I have no idea why people do that. I have seen so many used revolvers with that screw buggered up to no end from people using the wrong size screwdriver to remove a screw that never needs removing. I also can't count how many times I've seen wedges in upside down, backwards, or both! And/or hammered in so tightly it takes a jackhammer to loosen them. The things some people do to perfectly good firearms boggles the mind.

While is more reliable This one or the ACE?

The ACE. While the 1860 has been pretty good, it does still suffer from the occasional cap jam, like a lot of the Colt style revolvers do. My ACE has been 100% reliable so far - has not failed to fire for me even once.

@@johnzx6r thank you My 1863 remi pocket is weak but small. Looking for a smaller EDC but with more power still. My 1858 sheriff is fine in the winter with a big coat, but sticks out like a sore thumb in the summer in south Texas lol. Gonna grab an ace and IWB holster.

why have the prices jumped so high as of late? and still low or no stock. when i bought my Remmington, it was right at 100 bucks now i am seeing them at 400 and no, the new ones aren't easier to clean. i have a hard time believing every person panicking about buying a gun these days are opting for the black powder route. if this is true i predict a trainload of rusted shut piettas and ubertis in the not-too-distant future for sale in pawn shops. i do not think folks do their homework about these firearms to know what they are taking on.

Unfortunately I think the high prices are going to be the new normal for the foreseeable future. The availability has gotten a lot better that what it was even a year or so ago, but they still cost a lot more than they did prior to 2020, which kind of sucks.

Can these be found anywhere?

Right now it doesn't seem like anyone has them in stock. I'm sure Pietta will crank out another batch of them at some point. Might have to wait a little while, though.

Is the 36 snub nose on the same.frame as the 44?

Mostly. There is a slight difference in what they call the "water table" of the frame. This is the part of the frame above the trigger guard, where the "low end" of the cylinder is. The .44 cylinder is a little wider at the front, where it meets the barrel. If you look closely at the .36 and .44 cylinders, you will see that there is a little step up about halfway along the length of the .44 cylinder. This is to accommodate the larger diameter ball of the .44 compared to the .36. The water table on the .44 frame is cut out a little deeper in it's forward section to make room for this wider section of the cylinder. Other than that they are exactly the same. A .36 cylinder will fit and function on either a .36 or .44 frame, but a .44 cylinder will not fit on a .36 frame. Hope I explained that OK.

@@johnzx6r Reason I asked is that I have a 36 navy and the 44 cylinder and barrel both fit and cylinder rotates. I haven’t shot. Recently got a navy snubbie and the cylinder rotates on it as well I must have gotten a slightly smaller 44 cylinder. I have not tried to shoot either gun but I have fired caps and they shoot

@@couerleroi1 Interesting - maybe they have started making the frame cut outs a little larger to simplify production. Whatever the case, now you have the best of both worlds and can use the same frame for either .36 or .44!

Could be. Mine has been pretty reliable. I think I would only use it for self defense, though, if I absolutely had nothing else available to me.

Probably losing a bit of velocity compared to the 8" 1860 Army. I'm going to try to get this over a chronograph at some point to see what we get from it.

Sure your .36 cal isn't a 1861 Navy? With the barrel cut down and birdshead be hard to tell other than cal and Navy scene on cyl.

New guns can be pretty tight. It will come off, just make sure that the wedge has completely cleared the arbor, and just try giving the barrel assembly a good tug.

I do it that way because that is how they were traditionally used back in the day. I know I would probably get better results using ta two handed hold, but I just like using them in the way they would have been back in the 1800's.

If that is the best group I could do, at 16 yards, I would try and throw the thing at the target. Seriously! NOT very good.
