I agree. I used to be a theatre usher at the Sydney Opera House. I’ve heard so many reasons why people are late. In theatre the actual theatre is really just a hall for hire, and each hirer (Opera company, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, concert presenter etc) sets their own rules for latecomers for their performances, not the house. So they will often say no latecomers admitted until interval, a or scene change etc. The fact that 2000 other people managed to get there on time for the show is overlooked by their self entitlement. I had one young woman fall to her knees and wail because she was late and ‘I’ was locking her out. She said ‘I took so long to get ready too!’. I said ‘you should have left earlier to get here instead…’ Another said ‘why didn’t you wait? You knew we were coming!’….. 🤯

This a major phobia of mine. Being late. 1. I am not running. It might kill me. 2. I will be back on the ship an hour before all-aboard if at all possible. 3. I thought they used to sound the ship's horn an hour before leaving so that people knew to get back. But the past few cruises I didn't hear the horn.

I think you might find that the tradition of sounding the ships horn is now not acceptable in many ports around the world due to noise complaints from nearby residents. This doesn't apply to the required safety procedures when docking and manoeuvring the ship where the sounding of the horn is necessary.

Hi Tony. Pier runner's!! I think if the horn was blown and I was really late, I would have a little pep in my step. Even if I was late because of a ship excursion. If I'm out on my own. My feet are back on the ship the latest one hour before all aboard time. I also use an old fashioned wind up watch and set it to SHIP TIME before I get off the ship. As always thank you for all you do ❤️ Enjoy the rest of your day!

Sadly not all passengers can run for medical reasons, plus they may have a really good reason for being late. IE: Medical, motor accident and or resulting traffic jam. My sister told me if it's a tour organized by the ship or their agents then the ship waits. If passengers hire their own taxi etc. the ship goes even though they may have phoned in a problem. She gave up on cruises because the ship tours had too many on them, plus they went at too fast a pace. She did take her own trips but was looking at her watch the whole time and was on edge, so didn't enjoy them.

Now being disabled, I would still make an effort of getting back onboard faster, rather than a leisurely stroll

How arrogant to just walk. They should disassemble the gangway and the captain shouldn’t show them on. We were late once leaving St Maarten because of these late passengers, our arrival into St Lucia was later than planned and they had to adjust all the excursion times. It’s just so selfish.

  • @kathryncashner3294
    @kathryncashner3294Ай бұрын

Normally, cruise ships have paid to dock for 30 minutes after the "all aboard" time. That 30 minutes is spent hauling in the gangway, untying the ropes, and otherwise getting ready for departure. Since the gangway has not been pulled and the ship's personnel can see them on the dock heading toward the ship, it would be unusual for them to be left behind. I think the cruise line would be perfectly justified in charging a "late fee" for every minute after "all aboard" time that someone is delayed. Day care facilities charge $1 per minute up to $5 per minute in my area if a parent shows up after pick up time; I have no idea what the ship is charged for a late departure, but that would seem to be a fair amount to charge the passengers. If the port charge is $600 per hour, charge late passengers $10 per minute for arriving after "all aboard," and make it clear that the ship will not wait--preparations to depart begin at all aboard time. The time stops when they set foot on the ship, so their choice whether they wish to walk or run. Granted, if 10 people are late, the ship will collect more than the delay cost, but the charge has to be enough to hurt the individuals involved. On the other hand, we plan to be. back an hour before "all aboard," which covers us if I have messed up time changes, etc.

From where I’d be standing (on the ship) I’d have no idea why someone was late. Were they late because of a cruise line excursion? drinking/enjoying the island way too much? Lost sail and sign card? Injury in their party requiring medical attention on land? Returning from an externally booked excursion? Were they walking, not running, because they’d contacted the cruise line already and knew that the ship would be waiting for them? Basically I’d be watching the pier running/walking with a delicious cocktail in hand and feeling grateful that I wasn’t in their shoes. But I’m not going to shout and ridicule them.

Fair game! and you should run, to make it more dramatic. We had a huge delay leaving Amber Cove one time (ship excursions got stuck due to a truck incident). The 'runners' knew they were safe, and some started acting like they were running, others bowed as they approached -- that was a very odd, yet funny, event.

I would like to see the gangway personnel make a show of stowing the gangway. It looked like they could get it back on the ship pretty quickly, so I am wondering if setup would be similar. I bet you would a little less nonchalance out of the strollers.

i am a tour guide (not in a cruise port) but we also leave ON TIME. when i went on first cruise, i was so paranoid about getting back on time, and i typically run a little late in general - never over 10 minutes, but that's huge on a cruise ship. my first cruise was this fall, MSC's inaugural sailing across the NE of North America - time frames were a joke overall. but the stress i felt, to be on time.. REAL! that being said; i would never do this to folks who are last on my trolley, unless the folks knew them. this isn't just a tour bus, leaving you in a city you're staying in - most likely, it's a foreign country. logistically, it sucks for everyone involved.

If they aren’t making an attempt to hurry they should leave. It’s rude to inconvenience everyone. This delays the shops and casinos opening too.

Was on a Disney cruise last month and our excursion was 15-20 minutes late after boarding time. We didn't run because there was 50-60 of us. Hardley anyone on the balconies etc watching and no one yelling for us to run. LOL, I told my grandson and his wife we might end up on KZread. It is the only time I've ever been late for a boarding time. So glad it was a ship excursion.

From what I've seen, ships will wait for the return, even if late, of excursions booked through the cruise line.

We're always on time but last year we were on an excursion that had an issue and all 14 of us were late. The ship left 30 min after we boarded. I was so nervous we would get taunted

We did not wait for anyone at any of our stops during the transatlantic we just did this past October. I think that clearly shows that it is people who are newer to cruising that do this.

When I went to Roatan back in January, we were delayed from leaving because one of the ship's excursions was late getting back. But, then about 10 minutes after all of those people boarded, another man started running through the the port. So, I'm not sure if he was with that group and he stopped to buy something in the port, but he almost got left.

I've been late with a cruiseline excursion. I walk because I'm more afraid of tripping on something or the cobblestones if I were to run. Murphy's Law. We've also sailed late on embarkation day because cruiseline fights and transfers were late. It is stressful. Never fly in the day of your cruise!

If they started to remove the gangway with those leisurely walking back to the ship i'm sure they would suddenly start running.

I guess people have their reasons why they are late. I love the heckling. lol. Makes me sure of not being late. The best was when Lee the cruise director put a late runner on his back and carried him in. There were a lot of late runners that day. Must have been a Carnival Excursion being late. Thanks for that vid, Tony.
