    For the Object moving at a constant deceleration toward, i don't get the graphs for that.

  • @bleedb_g15

    @bleedb_g15

    5 жыл бұрын

    Jason Joseph another way to word this scenario is that the object is slowing down as it comes back toward the point of origin. So the y-axis value of distance has to be decreasing and since it’s slowing down (decelerating) the curve starts out steep and get less steep. Note this is consistent with the concept that slope of the tangent line to the curve (the instantaneous velocity) starts out with a large value and decreases as the graph increases in time. The velocity graph has to be below the time axis since the object is moving toward and since the velocity is decreasing at a constant rate the velocity numbers start out larger and get closer to zero as time increases giving a straight positively sloped line below the time axis. Since the slope of the velocity graph is positive this puts the horizontal line for the acceleration graph above the time axis with a y-intercept equal to the velocity graph’s slope. Hope this helps!

    The last scenario is a combination of constant deceleration away and then constant acceleration toward. So the x vs. t graph looks like a smooth hill. The v vs. t graph is a straight negatively sloped line that starts above the t axis and then passes through zero velocity and then below the t axis. Two additional points with the v vs. t graph: 1. The straight negatively sloped line passes through zero where the x vs. t graph is at its peak. 2. The slope of this line is -9.81 m/s^2. The a vs. t graph would be a straight horizontal line beneath the t axis and has a y-intercept of -9.81 m/s^2. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    suggar:v In lay man's terms slope is how steep a line on a graph is. Mathematically it's the change in y divided by the change in x of the line. A horizontal line would have zero slope since it has no change in y value.

    Clear Concept this acceleration vs time graph is a derivative of the velocity time graph above it. You can see that the rate of change of velocity (the slope) is constant therefore the acceleration is constant producing a horizontal line. You can also see that the slope of the velocity graph is positive therefore the acceleration graph must be above the time axis. Hope this helps.

    The term "deceleration" should be avoided in physics. Objects can accelerate in a negative direction, but they do not "decelerate". It is important to standardize language in science. Just like how "g" is 9.81 m/s^2 everywhere on Earth in the scientific community.

    I don't agree that g is 9.81 m/s^2. This is just a standard value to use when it isn't specified. The g-value varies with geographical location, and could be as low as 9.76 N/kg atop an equatorial mountain, and as high as 9.83 N/kg at the north pole.

    @@Brickswol It applies to just about any problem you'd solve in an academic class, unless the global variation of g is the main focus of the problem. That was a worked example in the text of the textbook for my undergrad class to teach the nuances of gravitation, but we didn't have any homework or exam problems where you needed to know that. This is why precious metals are measured with balances instead of scales, so people don't game the system by buying them at the equator and selling them up north.
