Photography. Simplified

Today’s video location What3words decisions.flagging.format
I suffer from FOMO. Fear off missing out. If I don't pack a certain lens, then I won't be able to get the shot. What if I take my drone, I might get epic images from the sky. I have to forget about what if, and simplify things. Today's video is about creating limitations, in the hope that photography will become simpler.

That’s a nifty little setup. Sony has so many lenses that we are spoilt for choice with small primes now. I hope you enjoy the Falcam clip. I was using it just this weekend, loving going tripod and camera bag free!

I love going for walks with just my 45mm (40mm FF equivalent) lens. I'm so used to that field of view that I rarely miss not having any other lenses with me. It's nice to keep it simple sometimes.

Thanks Richard, I am not sure whether I could answer what my favourite focal length is, because I shoot so many genres. When I photograph my family I tend to reach for a 50mm, but over the last year and a bit I have been leaning towards the 35mm for that (as I have three kids - tough to get three of them in the frame!) For landscapes, I must go into my Lightroom and see the stats on which focal length I am not often using, as I genuinely don’t know. I am looking forward to the limitation of using primes on location though.

Same location means light is always different so it no problem for me and I don’t see my photography as repetitive. As for one camera one lens I either use my A6400 with a 16-70mm lens or my Q2 but 85% it’s my 15ProMax. As for bags a small single cross body sling bag with enough room for one camera, batteries and filters is my fave. Very liberating. Lovely reflections of the cliffs in the sand. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Victor. That is what I am looking for ideally, just to remove options and have one camera and one focal length so that I can concentrate on other things. I was having this discussion with another photographer last night, I am not a fan of using my phone to take photographs (only recce documentation and location/sun records) as I don’t enjoy the ergonomics of using the phone and don’t want to add case/grip etc - that seems to be against the point of having something that fits into your pocket. But I see some amazing results from photographers using their phones.

@@benharveyphotography I understand what you mean regarding a phone but unlike you for me photography has been a lifelong hobby and I mainly upload on FB etc and you know how that media treats photo uploads, wrecks quality regardless of what camera used. I rarely print, so only use images from cameras for prints. Regards.

Since I have set myself the challenge of both creating the video and the photographs with one camera and one lens, I have to use my mirrorless cameras as I need a flip out screen and autofocus. I will probably be using my Sony A7iv or my Canon R8, the R8 being my smallest camera by far.

Cheers Jim. I forget whether you are in the Arca Swiss world, as we have had many conversations about tripods etc, but I really like the strap quick release plate that I found. I paid for it with my own money, this wasn’t a product review, because I really enjoy finding accessories that make photography easier and a more pleasurable experience and i thin kit does just that. If you do get one, you have to get the Ulanzi plate to go with it, a peak design arca swiss. Plate for example fits it, but it doesn’t secure in the clip - so it is part of a system from Ulanzi. Drop me a DM if you want any more info :-)

Great video as usual Ben & great location too. I like a one-lens shooting day. So far, discounting any zoom lenses, my go-to primes are, 35mm, 45mm, 60mm Macro, 85mm, 105mm macro & finally 300mm. The latter is a big old beast & is for shorter days, or mounted on a tripod. I'm in two minds if bringing a 1.4 x teleconverter (extender) along still counts as single-lens shooting? Anyway, I'm sure someone will have something to say about that in the comments. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with in upcoming videos. PS. Nice quick-release plate, but why do you feel the need to unclip from your strap when shooting handheld? When shooting outdoors without a tripod, I'm on the strap 99% of the time. When the lens is small & light enough, I'll slip my right hand through a Peak Design Clutch, hand strap.

Hi Chris, I have a few other primes that I might add to the mix - but I need to be strategic about which I choose. Image trying to film yourself at 300mm! Good question about the clip and why you would want to release it from the strap. Just this weekend I was using it with canon and 50mm lens taking photos of my kids down on the beach. I wanted to capture some low shots vertical, so the camera was just off the sand and the flip screen out. I had to take it off the strap as it simply wasn’t long enough to get down to the group. I can of course lengthen the strap but I want it around my lower back area when not in use, not swinging at my hips. Hopefully that makes sense.

@@benharveyphotography When shooting low down to the ground like that, I slip the strap off my shoulder & wrap it around my right wrist. In my case using a Peek Design strap it's the quickest & simplest way. It also adds that extra level of drop protection. In the past, I've dropped a Nikon D800 from a few inches above the ground with no strap, which landed on the viewfinder & drove it into the camera, causing extensive damage to the sensor etc. I'm surprised the insurance company didn't write it off as the repair cost was about the same as a good used example, but there again, I have New for Old insurance cover, so it was less expensive for the insurer than forking out for what then would have been a brand new D810. With me, it's a case of once bitten, twice shy when it comes to going strapless.

I love this approach. I don't understand why some photographers need a backpack full of stuff that they won't even use. The "just in case" rational seems lame. Take a chance, simplify. Focus on photography and not all your gear.

Thanks Trevor, I try to follow this ethos - but I still suffer from FOMO. Just last night I went out to Beachy Head Light house (future video) and I took the drone with me just in case. I turned out to bee way to windy to fly it, but I had to carry the extra drone, 3 batteries and a remote for a gruelling hike up and down the cliffs. All because I could have got some epic drone video and photos. I got some photographs from eye level instead!
