Which camera gear to AVOID

Creating photos and video is an expensive business, and there is always new shiny equipment being released. But it is all to easy to fall for the latest fad, instead of spending your money where it is most important.
In today's video I discuss the top 8 camera accessories that make my life easier and maintain the high quality videos that I publish on KZread.

The gear I use to make my content (although this is always changing!)
Sony A7iv + 20mm 1.8G - My main KZread camera for shooting out on location.
Canon EOS R + 16mm F2.8 + Zhuyin Crane M3 - I use this for a combination of stills and video B-roll
Sony A7iii - this is my primary stills camera that works with native Sony lenses and all my Canon EF lenses on the Sigma MC-11 adaptor
Canon 5D3 - I use this camera when I use my EF glass and there is no benefit in adapting
DJI Mavic Pro 2 - My first drone, and I can’t see me replacing it. It’s amazing for both stills and video
Go Pro Hero 8 - for adverse weather conditions that my other cameras might not survive!
Insta360 - X3 & One inch edition - for 360 degree video and BTS content
Microphones - DJI Wireless Mic, Rode Wireless Go, Rode Lav Go, Rode Video Pro+, Rode Video Micro
Photo Tripods - Sirui ST-124 with Sirui ballhead, Peak Design travel tripod

excellent point Ben about a rate of diminishing returns when buying gear. Thankfully I have a face for radio so video is an area I have not felt the need to delve into but your philosophy still rings true for photography too

This isn’t a competition Jim, but I might save some people money with this video but you used to save people’s lives. You win :-) I think that we are both in the same boat regarding cameras, we have an EOS R and if we were to sell up and spend double (or more?) we could get the Canon R5 - but we wouldn’t see double the benefit in image quality. As you say, diminishing returns.

A great video Ben, really useful information and a few things for me to think about. Interestingly one of the ads that popped up part way through your video involved a man talking to camera with no mic on his person and he was nearly 3m away - I shall inform him on his need to watch and learn! Thank you for taking the time to do this AND for considering the 'don't waste your money' aspect.

Thanks Louise, i just want to pass on my mistakes so that others don’t have to make them. But sometimes you have to learn the hard way! Also, I love it when you get relevant adverts in the middle of a video. My favourite is when someone is talking about a sponsor of the video and then an advert for that sponsor cuts into the video!

Another great video Ben. Being someone who shoots video once a year, if that, it was interesting to watch this from afar as it were. Having said that, some of your recommendations transfer equally as well to stills shooters like me. I'm like you a user of a Small Rig L bracket. Buy quality, buy once, well that is the ideal situation. Like many, I've made the odd duff purchase in the past. Something to chalk down to experience.

Cheers Chris, yes there are other brands to provide l-brackets and cages but I love the design features that smallrig put into their products. Magnetic Alan keys and bespoke locking mechanisms that all slide into a concealed ‘nook’ under the bracket is so satisfying. The amount of advertising I get from smallrig for making this video is outrageous - but I always find myself scrolling through their catalogue as they make some really innovative products.

This is a very useful video. I don't make many videos but I do photograph real estate and find the camera cage to be a valuable asset. Using the cage, I can mount an external monitor on it and get a larger and better view of my scene than just using the camera screen. I completely agree that good audio is a must. I would be annoyed trying to watch a video with bad audio. Great work, Ben!

Thanks Clark, I hadn’t even considered using an external monitor for stills. I have done tethered shooting before via a laptop and Lightroom when shooting some high speed photography before, but of course that wouldn’t;t work for real estate as you would constantly have to move the setup. I assume that external monitors are well calibrated and stable straight out of the factory?

The only thing I wish to comment on is the DJI mics. I bought them and had to return them when I saw how flimsy the bracket was for fixing the receiver to the camera hotshoe. Not only was the bracket flimsy but it stuck in the receiver and was really difficult to remove. Luckily I managed to remove it without damaging the receiver. However had I not been able to remove the bracket or it broke in the receiver, the receiver would be useless as it wouldn't then fit in the charging case. Really shoddy build quality; I replaced them with the Rode mics.

Hi Rob, this is a valid point and I was aware of this issue before I purchased the DJI mics (I watched several review on them but one that I would recommend is by Potatojet who compares the DJI and Rode). I already owned the Rode mics and purchased the DJI version for a few reasons, I prefer the sound of the DJI mics, comparisons show that the DJI mics also handle clipping way better than the Rode, the charging case is really handy and keeps everything together, the magnetic clips mean that you can mount the DJI mics in the centre of your chest rather than on your collar and finally the interface of getting your files off the device when you record internally is just like an external memory drive (Rode requires you to use their app). The build quality that you point out though, on the clip, is disappointing but I would still choose the DJI mics because of the above features. Hopefully they address it with a future model as well as house the cables and wind shields in the redesign of the case also.

Higher cost does not indicate better gear. Often it can mean more specialised. With more specialised it may be better for one things, and way worse for others ...

Exactly - I think that cameras and equipment though are falsely advertised as being the right product for the wrong audience. I am in some Facebook groups that specialise in weddings for example and there are many instances where people are trading in cameras that they thoughts would be up to the task but fall short for one reason or another. You never really know until you try something if it will be right for you and then it’s too late.
