I've lived next door to Stern Grove for 25 years, and have seen dozens of incredible musicians performing on that stage. But this show topped 'em all. What a gift, thank you Phil! And Friends...what an incredible band! Everyone on that stage was superb, but special shout out to Mikaela on harp and Katie on violin...just beautiful! And the triple guitars of Scott, Grahame and the great Stanley Jordan were often jaw-dropping. Come on back next year, Phil!
Phil at 82 so awesome. I first saw him when he was 32. 50 years later still going strong.

Such a great day and even better show, Can't believe the first time I saw the Dead was in Reno 1974 and now Phil in 2022 Set List Dark Star > St. Stephen Shakedown Street Terrapin Station > Jack O’ Roses Let It Grow > Dark Star Jam > Playing in the Band Somewhere Over the Rainbow Jam Mountains of the Moon > Uncle John’s Band
same comment since jumping on in 1984: "THANK YOU PHIL"
Thank you SO MUCH for this beautiful recording. So beautiful to see Phil having so much fun with his son et al.
God, I love watching/hearing/listening to Phil play. He is so funky. There is so much love in his playing. Thank You for sharing this!
What a sweet set at my favorite outdoor venue in SF. I was looking forward to seeing Phil and friends since I missed the show at Frost Amphitheater in May. I am not one to blame anything or anyone but dammit Outside lands, I contracted Covid at the festival in GGP. I gave my tickets to my son who’s been going to shows since he was 10, he is now 25 and a sign that this music is timeless and loved by so many.

I've had to get refunds, donate the tix, and even have to eat the cost without anyone else to take them. This has mostly been the last 10 years or so for reasons too numerous to recount but I really hate having to pass on my favorite musicians. Last year I missed out on some music because I had "emergency" surgery but I had been having an extreme case of gallbladder issues that would knock me down for 2-3 days minimum every week for about 6 months and started summer 2013 but was a couple of attacks per year only. Missed many shows as it became more frequent and my previous doctor did nothing to assist but tried throwing omeprezole and anti-nausea meds at me. It really sucked because I typically need to travel 500 miles to see more than the rare show. I hope Phil has more years as I do for all but I would love to see the "core four" to ensure the hatchet is buried and feel the magic enough for some one off shows or runs. If not, I'm overdue to see Phil. He's the only one that I have not seen/heard live since FTW. I had been hoping to go to his restaurant and catch him with Grahame but that's gone now, sadly. That menu and food quality sounded A++++, follow by a couple drops and a show and what more could one ask for that isn't a full tour.
I never liked orchestra's strings in rock and roll but that harp sounds very beautiful Through The Dark Star Jam!!!! Uncle Phil keep it going playing music will keep you young!!!!

Harpist Mikaela Davis is something special. A lot of us first learned about her on Bob Weir's Tiny Desk concert (great version of Ripple). I've seen her perform live with her band. If you like her mix in Dark Star - and who wouldn't? - you'll love the rest of her work. Amazing singer, too. Check out her Relix Dead set here on KZread. But also her original stuff - she does a lot more than cover the Dead.

Always great to see Mikaela Davis on harp. You can see her with Bobby on his npr think desk
That harp is perfect for Dark Star.
Wow, just to see Phil at 82, still smiling that shit eating Phil grin I remember for so long… amazing, and still crankin’ out those beautiful bass melodies oh so many years later…this is my “miracle every day…” And in Golden Gate Park no less…🙌🙌🙌❤️
thank you so much for posting this full show online. the whole thing brought joy to my heart, but that Jack O'Roses is something else.
Just can't get enough of this absolutely astounding set-up of instruments.
Superb Phil has a large circle of superb friends.
My favorite part of Phil's bio is when he is about to started conducting the SF Orchestra to play his original work he turns and sees Jerry in the audience smiling. If there is an after life I'm sure Jerry is grinning from ear to ear hearing this beautifully arranged music.
Boy…if only Jer could’ve found a life of recovery…imagine all the amazing music they still had in them. That said, we’ve been blessed and received FAR more live Dead music than I ever expected on 8/9/95…

I agree on how much the Dead continued after jerrys passing. It didnt end the band nearly like we all orob thought it would! In a few years, if they're still playing, the dead will have gone on longer without him than they did with him Although I don't think recovery would have saved him, ironically, I'm not so sure it was really the drugs that killed him. I'll rank chili dogs, cigarettes, and not taking care of diabetes above drugs as the likely candidate! Come to think of it, I don't think any of the surviving members are "recovery" peeps...

@@arareanddifferenttune3130 seriously!!! I only saw Jerry between 1990 and 95 and I think it was 13 shows. I think I remember when, starting with the other ones and 98, I got to 13 shows post Jerry. I remember thinking how much they were kicking ass and remember when they issued the press release on Valentine's Day of 2002 and said they were officially changing their name to "the dead" in honor of how great they've gotten... they knew they had a badass band again. I love the 03 tour, 04 was sort of I don't know and 09 had some seriously awesome moments in it here and there. Rat dog was perfect by the end and '08 and further was awesome, so it's just been an awesome run for them even after Jerry died

@@matthewmaurysmith2486 that’s awesome you’ve gotten to see so much! I never got to see Jerry, I was born in 88. I started going to dead shows in 03 and did all of summer tour in 03 and 04. Agree that 03 was better. After 04 saw a lot of Phil and Friends and Ratdog. Caught a lot of Furthur shows after that and did a few tours. I went to the Fare Thee Well shows with Trey in Chicago and since then have been catching as many Dead and Co. shows as possible, I have been absolutely loving what they’ve been doing lately. Have you caught any Dead and Co shows?

@@realbrucepalma Thanks for the comment. Jerrys vocals can not be replaced. Jeff is an incredible keyboard player but rather see Phil, String Cheese Incident, Wide Spread Panic, Derrick Trucks or Umphreys McGee tbh I first saw SCI at a Phil show in the early 2000s What a find! Nice work Phil!!! Jimmy Herring and UM use to play at some of the same bars I did. They for sure started at the bottom. Kinda a shared sense of reality there.
Thrilling! Wow!!!
Great lineup and selection of tunes.
Nice to hear Phil bringing up the tempo on St. Stephen! Molo does a great job following and driving at the same time. This band really builds off each other in the spirit of the Dead!

Fantastic! What a nice surprise!
Every musician made great contributions, but Ms. Jacoby was amazing, especially on Jack O' Roses and UJB.
The biggest goosebumps. Genius thinking getting these talents together to PLAY. The lost chord.
What an absolutely amazing set-up of instruments. The harp suits real well.
I really don't know what to expect from the Philco lineup in a couple weeks, but I sure hope it's as good as this. Having harp and fiddle in the mix is really nice. Haven't gotten to the Somewhere Over the Rainbow yet, but I assume Stanley Jordan will be melting my face.

I only wish Jordan had been higher in the mix overall. Scott Metzger and Grahame Lesh often had similar tone that kind of blended together in the mix and it was hard to hear what Stanley was doing except when there were specific passages like over the rainbow. One of the notable things about the Dead, really, they all had such distinctive sound spaces within the whole.

@@kevinfarrell329 I agree. Generally I prefer to not have more than 2 guitars on stage, because of the overlap and you either have guitarists crowding the sound or underplaying because they don't want to step on anyone else's toes. Overall I really liked the set though.
I can’t believe how well the harp and violin fit in!

I love this show. I'm grateful this music is still goin on, but lately I've been a little tired of the uninspired versions of scarlet begonias etc from various bands; however this lineup makes it all brand new to me. The harp addition to grateful dead is incredible. The harp makes this show. It adds another celestial dimension to the grateful dead music. I would say she adds as much to the music as branford marsalis did. I need to see her play with Phil. Her angelic playing sounds like LSD tracers.

in tribute I write Keys To The Rain Keys to the Rain I sure never wrote the song Should I put it in quotations? I really don’t think Hunter would mind He was pretty good at handing them over Saying, “Here, you take over and drive, But, just one thing I’ll ask of thee Please pass them on When you are free”. There are always new ears out there Listening for bending sound waves Drifting across that eternal sea So much bigger than you and me The locks of life, beg to be picked All the while keys lying within Emanating in vibrating notes and beats Sights and solutions Spinning like a Kaleidoscope Colours bending in front of me Music creates more than a cacophony Thunder and lightning are natures orchestra There rhythms and explosions Rain down on me To dance the night away The spinning, swirling, swaying, singing Chasing storms away Stars explode and fade away As the Anthem of the Sun Transforms clouds into the new day Though my ring be full of keys There are some, the ring will not hold These perhaps, are, the ones of gold A metaphoric mindful mosaic mantra Will open many doors Drive all the cars, trucks and buses Through cold sleet, hurricanes, tornadoes and snow Bursting through a rainbow The Beat bursts forth Rolling down the street Evaporating into the air Until one has to ask Was I really there? Jingling keys say I was 8/18/22

Jam on man!
Oh my, a bear puppet on a stick. I forgot about all the stuff over the years whether something like that to "flags" or tie-dye fabric in lots, campgrounds, or even inside venues. Love it. Anyone you claims Phil can't sing needs to eat a 20 strip and contemplate their claim. Sure, not as polished as Bobby, Jerry, Vince, Brent, or even Donna but sounding far better than 2015.
I am a deadhead, and a Phil fan….and love Stanley Jordan, but there was a bit too much rhythm layered on top of rhythm! A few to many people on the stage for me. I prefer a cleaner sound where the lead/melody of the song can shine through. Stanley Jordan parts came closest but where too sparse. Just my thoughts, if you loved it, great❤️🎸
Long live Phil
