There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.

That's something I can relate to, not necessarily for the 80s as I wasn't born, but for significant times that' passed and the music that came with it. Quite astutely put 👌

“There’s a fire that’s been burning right outside my door. I can’t see, but I feel it, and it help to keep me warm. So, I don’t mind.” That line follows this one, “They don’t tell me nothing, so I find out all I can.” To me, it almost seems like Phil is describing the mental anguish one might go through when they feel excluded, and isolated. It almost sounds like someone soothing themselves through an anxiety attack. “I can’t come out to find you. I don’t like to go outside.” It sounds like someone who is uncomfortable around people. “They can turn off my feelings like they’re turning off the light.” Every line of this song rings so true to me. “Seems so long I’ve been waiting… still don’t know what for…” I’m 50 years old, and I still don’t know what I’m waiting for… so, I don’t worry anymore. ☺️

Damn i Love that Song. Story of my life. Thank you Phil ❤
Such an amazing song that evokes so much emotion, a hallmark of Phil’s musical writing style. Grew up with it and it never gets old. In doing a little research, in a VH1 interview back in the day, Phil said that the inspiration of the song was actually “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest”. I had always thought it was a song about the workaday man - which still kinda fits the lyrics - but hearing the mental institution angle sheds a whole other light on the song. Perhaps we all live in prisons or institutions of one sort or another and we all wish to go back “home” even if it’s little more than a conjuring of our own imagination. Yet another great song brought to you by “deep thought’s with Uncle Phil.”
