I love how faithful this is to his actual character. Just that one moment of his darker side depth that has been a part of him since the first issue, that "he could have gone so much differently" of a bullied kid quietly saying to himself how he'll make them all pay. Like, it shows Peter's heroic side while also not pretending he's a perfect paragon, having that lil streak of pumped up kicks that he's forever fighting back. He's heroic, but he's the most _bitter_ superhero that's this heroic. Him risking worse bullying while injured because he can't not talk shit, it's all very Lee/Ditko. Ironically in this timeline he actually healthily recovers and grows.

@@archivist_13 Yeah, there wasn't really an archetype for a character like him in media when he was created, so he just got pushed into the closest thing of the time. But in the original run, the more writing Ditko did, the more we got this weirdly unique idea. Ultimate Spider-Man really knew how to adapt it into the modern era. He's respected by his teachers for his intelligence, but is also a problem kid. Nick Fury is so hands-on with him because he's terrified of Peter becoming the next great supervillain. It serves to pull out a point that's existed since the start. In 616, he fights the Fantastic Four and gets in a fight and really bitter argument with the Avengers in his first few years. He's a little on edge in a dangerous way. Peter is structurally a supervillain character who obstinately refuses to become one because of Uncle Ben's death. Even the MCU gets it, going about it with a different flavor of villain, showing Peter as being prone to the same sort of damage to the multiverse as Wanda for the same root reasons (love). Even changing the specific type of villain (MCU Spider-Man does not have the spite and bitterness and hate), they still understood that him being on the edge of really breaking everything in selfishness was vital. There's like five billion what if and AU stories all about how without some PTSD, Peter Parker will become a supervillain. They even played with it in Symbiote Spider-Man recently. The same sort of trauma happened to and worked on Mysterio, but Peter misunderstood and was raging and ruined the heel-face turn. Peters who don't get traumatized by using their powers for personal gain eventually become Kingpin-level problems at best. Add an evil Ben and they become Otto.

She becomes like a fusion of Batman & Spider-Man and it works so much BETTER! One of Peter's problems is his Overconfidence in his Brawn & Powers, rather than using Tech to help combat more of his Baddies. An it makes sense, because what Physically Bullied Nerd would NOT want to cut loose and get physical with his Villains? To beat them with Brawn and get away from his Bullied Self?

I kind of love how Peter being shot changed his trajectory in life, few panels back he was getting bitter over the bullying. Some stories say the "with great power" line to give Peter a new attitude at life and not ve selfish, but putting Peter's parents on the sights of the robber was better; It confirms SM Peter's core guilt that if he could do something about it he would even it means jumping on a gun with no powers, that's why his guilt of letting the original universe robber was so painful to him. Also Peter is literally more happy being a puny crippled guy than being Spider-Man and that breaks my heart for the mainstream timeline

This isn't written as a modern AU, but rather specifically written to emulate the characters of the Lee/Ditko era, but with Silk added in. Given that, there's the idea of specifically adapting _how_ Lee wrote. If Stan Lee had created an Asian-American hero and then given her the Jameson dynamic, that's the sort of political commentary he'd have done. I think it fits well, even if it's not who he traditionally is. Also, this is in a nebulous fictional time period that's both the 60s and the early 2000s, because Marvel doesn't actually address the sliding time scale like DC did in Doomsday Clock. So if you consider that the Cold War is in play from a metafiction level, that makes sense.

In accordance to "great power comes great responsibility" in the Raimiverse spiderman 2 you can see how much burnt out he is from that responsibility, when he had no powers, less responsibility, he focused on his schooling and his relationships, he was happy for a while, as responsibility was slowly just coming to him, while being spiderman was a responsibility that he had to take on as fast as he could. This story is a lil more of that kinda life he could've lived, especially of someone else is taking the mantle of the spider-menace, he couldn't really get that chance in the Raimiverse since there are no other "super"heroes. But even without the mantle, he still really cares for people, he's taking in that responsibility in a way a normal

This really is. It's such a perfect reimagining of the Lee/Ditko era, and like spot=on in the characters, but with all the advancements of modern writing. They should have this team do a retelling of Peter's high school era with new stories, sorta like Symbiote Spider-Man.

this was part of the “End of the spiderverse” comic where one of Shathra’s minions stabs Spiderman with this dagger that basically unravels him from the web of life so that basically he never got bit by a spider and became spider-man. Instead it was Cindy Moon in the universe that becomes silk but later on in the comic they kinda rewrite the web of life again so that Peter Parker is once again Spider-man

actually this is a really good storyline, it shows perfectly how spiderman's best and actual power is his intelligence and NOT his powers (which come with the combo) Peter usually stops his enemies by thinkering and this is what i like the most from spiderman, been able to do impressive acrobatics etc is the visual part and what lets him go face to face to a sup... but he could easily be one of the most amazing sidekicks any sup could have.

Only complaint with this is how they still had Peter using a crutch, showing his leg never fully healed up (just glad he was able to walk still). Peter always has to have some sort of problem unfortunately. But he’s a Oscorp scientist now so he could probably make something for his leg to help him out 😄

This reminded me of Hajime no Ippo. And how his school bullies became his friends and biggest fans when they found out he was a boxer and won his first match. Theres something about these stories thats just more emotionally powerful and satisfying than "and then he beat his bullies to a pulp" or "then he slammed his bully to the wall and said 'if you ever touch me again, ill break your arm"".

  • @aldairreynoso2564

It's interesting that he asks silk why she doesn't use her powers for fame and fortune, being that he does that when he first becomes spiderman, although since he never got bitten by the spider he never grows out of that mentality, But that doesn't overtly make him a bad person at all. I like that they don't have all his good fortune go to his head and become a douche its literally peter parker just without a hint of tragedy that has followed him for so long. Very good character writing, I like it.
