This story s such a relief from other Spider-man comics. There's no drama, barely any tension, it just feels like a nice break from the beatdown life gives Spider-man in other stories, and it makes me genuinely happy to see Spider-man and Kingping just playing a card game.

I like how Kingpin wasn't there to ruin the lives of people, to beat people up, nothing like that. He just wanted to see if he could boast about being better at poker. Some villians don't want to watch the world burn, they just want to win because it's fun.

I mean, adding to this, he even said that if they refused he'd leave and that'd be that. So while he was taunting them sure, at least he was being fair about it. If the heroes won they'd get a nice donation for charity, if he wins he celebrates with a boat, and a cuban cigar. No huge end of the world plot, no big "Spider man must reveal his face!" No. Just a guy who came to flex his ability to play poker, put his money where his mouth is. And failed.

I love this book already. I love the exchange between Spidey and Kingpin; Kingpin saying that if he wins the money, he'll use it to buy drugs and overall make the world worse. And with Peter's twenty dollars, he'll buy an illegal cuban cigar. That's amazing, that's a more Kingpin move than anything I've seen from him in ages.

@@freakymoejoe2 it's not the most petty thing he's done either; in Ultimate Spider-Man he bought the rights to Spider-Man's likeness, meaning any good thing Peter did would make his merch sell better, and thus would fund Kingpin.

That has got to be the most devastating loss Fisk has suffered on a personal level. He gave out his own money sure he could beat these amateur players, heroes, at cards and yet lost it all to possibly the most obnoxious hero to him in the room. Love to see it.

I think Spidey, because of his enhanced senses and years of experience, is very attuned to each of his movements throughout his body, which makes sense as he needs to be quick and nimble but also perfectly still during stealth missions. So he can perfectly control his body, including any tells.

You're right. The money meant nothing, it was the principle of defeating the heroes and taking away something they do to put a little bit of good in the world and blow off steam, and to crush and personally humiliate them and always leave a sore spot on any future nights when they look back and go "remember that time kingpin showed up ruined the day and we lost out on helping people with $300k and instead it went to a horrible cost?" That was what Kingpin wanted...and instead, it was he who ended up with egg on his face XD

The fact that kingpin would go out of his way to use the twenty dollars he'd get from Spiderman to illegally buy a Cuban cigar is just another level of petty and I love it

It's the maniacal laughing from Spidey at the end that really makes it. Just like Kingpin takes a lot of pleasure in embarrassing the heroes, Spidey takes a particular enjoyment in embarrassing the villains.

What had me flabbergasted the most is the fact that Strange was able to go toe to toe with Galactus and recreate the entire universe and its exact timeline for what I think was millions of years which I'm sure took a lot of concentration, will, and brainpower, but he lost all his money to this big round ol mentos gum looking queball. But the part where Spidey absolutely played Fisk and the look on his face had me dying, so it was worth it.

Spider-Man being able to sense when people are bluffing is reasonable, I mean how else can Spidey tell a villain is lying and about to ambush him. I love it when the hero humiliates the villain instead of just beating them normally. Like imagine the story "Ya so Kingpin crashed our poker night and Spider-Man beat him completely.".

Even once for no actual stakes (as in, with play-money)? Sure, one would expect to lose in that situation, but like, could still be interesting, right? Or maybe the experience wouldn’t be much different from just losing normally? Hmm. I’m not sure, I’m not experienced with poker.

Knowing how Kingpin holds grudges, I'm pretty sure losing to Spider-Man here is another reason for him hiring that sniper to shoot him.

I love that Peter just being who he is made Reed straight up "I love being a Hero", to inspire one of if not THE smartest man on Earth is just spectacular to say the least

-Wait, I'm with Kingpin on this one, how does Spidey have four nines if Kingpin's holding two of them? There are only four of each card in your standard deck, one of each suit. They may be using multiple decks shuffled together, but that's really only done at casinos and competitive tournaments, not at causal get-togethers like this. And Kingpin's reaction to the hand seems to confirm that he knows there shouldn't be more than four nines in the deck. Admittedly it might be explained in a panel that wasn't shown here, but just from what's shown in the video it looks like either Spidey cheated in order to win, or Kingpin was cheating the whole time, and this was Spidey's way of calling him out on it without directly stating it.- EDIT: Nevermind, I'm an idiot. They're playing Hold 'Em, so two of the nines are on the table. You can even see it at 3:00. Leaving this up so others can revel in my stupidity, and possibly have this question answered for them before they ask it themselves.

As far as I could tell they never showed his hand just the spread (don't know what it's actually called) kingpin said he had a full house over nines so that means his two cards could've been 2 queens, 2 twos, or 2 of whatever that left most card is. If we were to assume he had 2 nines then his hand would've been 4 nines high queen same as Spidey which is clearly not what he stated

I mean if he didn't he would be called a sore loser and get ridiculed by all the other villains (especially since quite a few noteworthy heroes where there) That and the fact if he tried making some ruckus quite a few powerhouses where in the room and would rock his world

As much as I love a good action story with highs stakes, clashing ideologies, and conquering impossible odds. There is something special about the "downtime episodes". The "needless filler" as some would call it, that shows the cast in a more normal day to day setting. Stuff like this puts a smile on my face. Seeing the heroes, and villain's, doing something they enjoy for the sake of having fun. It makes them feel more human. I love these kind of stories, and I feel there's not many of them.

He may be a jokerster, but he also has an IQ of 250, he's also almost always holding back. In other words don't underestimate Spider-Man.

@@DaemosDaen there a comic, Ant-man if i am not mistaked, where a bunch of D villains are getting ready for a job and there a newbie villain, and they are explaining to him that new york is split in multiple territories and each territory belong to a different hero, and they are all extremely dangerous, the only not dangerous Hero is spiderman that rule the central area of New Works, the territory with tall buildings, they also explain that if you laffy of Spiderman's jokes he go super easy on you and basically just tie you up with the webs

Now I want to know the alternate universe version of spiderman who uses his patent pending "gambling sense" to defeat evil casino owners such as Kingpin, Hammerhead, and Tombstone. Working under them as dealers, bouncers, opposing gamblers, and waiters would be the rest of the Spiderman cast 😂.

I honestly prefer king pin and spidermans rivalry to be that of a constant prank war between them that never ends. Like instead of him like shooting aunt may I like him more as like the Ultimate Spiderman version where he's ruthless and violent when they first meet but once Spidey figures out to get under his skin he no longer has that fear factor.

Like, I’m just picturing Lex abducting Alfred and setting up some elaborate death contraption and stalling Batman just long enough for it to “go off” and it’s just a confetti shower and an arcade machine going “you lose” as Lex goes into a deep and thought provoking monologue about the importance of pranks

It’s completely reasonable that his spider sense can help him in poker like this. I honestly can believe that his abilities would try to protect him from the harm of his wallet being hurt even, what I have a hard time believing is that anyone aware of his spider sense’s capabilities to do that would let him play and I feel like Peter would be good natured enough to make that apparent. Is there some context I’m missing regarding the accepted level of fairness the players have for almost uncontrollable powers and how they can influence the game?

Besides Kingpin, no one gets to keep the money. They're playing with friends and the winner chooses which charity the money goes to. His friends don't mind if Peter has an advantage and Kingpin believes he's superior to everyone.

Like others have said, I think if it was for anyone at the table to win the moneyfor themselves then they wouldn't let Peter play, The money's going to charity no matter who wins so it's a case of "Psht so what if he has an advantage it's going to a good cause in the end lets see if we can outplay him" kind of deal.

My favorite hero-villain interactions are the ones where the costumes don't matter and the gadgets aren't a factor. I absolutely _love_ stuff like this story! Maybe that's why I liked _Darkwing Duck_ and _ReBoot_ so much…

Love me some spidey side stories. My favorite superhero since like 10 years old has been Spider-Man, it is always fun to see him in a normal scenerio and see what he acts like outside of his adventures. Especially since we as Spider-Man fans are so used to seeing him go through hell.

It is refreshing seeing villains and heros just play a nice game. King Pin wins and does more crime, the heros win and they donate to charity. Seems fair to me.

All in all, just things being normal. Nothing world ending just a little chill and play. Not only that, kingpin might have lost, but in the end, he has basically contributed to a positive movement. If I asked him if he ever cared about losing that $300,000, he would probably would have said " In hindsight, I hate the principal of me losing to a couple of clowns in spandex, but a couple of chum change ain't gonna hurt me. In my eyes, it was fair. An eye for an eye, ya know." He probably hated losing to spidey, but in my opinion (and his if he can get over it) it's probably better than losing to the house that he doesn't own.

@@timloth2994 He was massively upset because he got played by Spiderman. It wasn't about the money here. It is chump change to him but he wanted to prove his superiority to them, and instead he got spanked by the guy he hates the most in front of everyone. Kingpin was looking to embarrass the heroes, not in front of the public, but for his own personal enjoyment. Instead now the heroes are going to talk how he got schooled by Spiderman in a poker game and that story will spread among the heroes. Kingpin's going to throw a fit in his home.

this is really inconsistent between writers. There's one issue where spider-man complains about his spider-sense because "My wife can't even hug me by surprise when I'm washing the dishes" His spider-sense is supposed to warn him about *everything dangerous* that include friends

The poker issue is one of my all time favorite Spidey stories.

I love the ending to the Spider-Man game when the heroes are playing poker, and Daredevil gets accused of peeking.

Honestly this is something we could do with more of in media. Heroes just sitting around with their biggest foes after a battle or whatever and just chatting and such. Thats a whole niche that I'd love to see more of in movies and shows

It would’ve been funny as hell if spidey was using miles in his invisible state too cheat in poker😂

And this is why I love Kingpin. Because he's at the top and he KNOWS it. But when someone kicks him down a notch, it's all the more satisfying.

The idea of heros playing poker to have fun, and donate the winnings to a charity of the winners choice, is such a interesting idea and a thing Spider-Man would totally do

Honestly stuff like this is why the current nightwing and flash runs are my current favorite on going comics its not all bad guy this and despair its their day to day lives blended in with their heroics it gives a sense of normalcy that makes the characters feel real and natural.

What's even funnier is imagining this in context with the background. The Thing donates $212 to one charity, Doctor Strange manages a $150 donation to another, then Spidey drops 400 grand on his choice before the next week a different charity gets $300 from Captain America. The idea of all these charities comparing and wondring why Spider-man of all people is apparently Mr. Moneybags is kinda hilarious in a mundane way.

Spiderman would probably be cheating with his spidey sense lol

Another poker game scene I recently saw was a group of DC villains having a poker night and discussing what city is the best place to score, and one pipes up, "What about Central City?" and everyone else there is going, "NNNNnnnnnnooooooo!!! The Flash is the worst hero you can encounter," and then go into stories about how Flash has defeated and humiliated various villains because of his "nice guy" attitude.

I love these genuine interactions between characters where they are out of their usual superhero/villain lives and just hanging out. Like the Rhino getting Spiderman a birthday present

One of my favorite supervillian/hero concepts is the "it's just a job" type. Where while they are "on the clock" doing their evil deeds, they are evil and dastardly, but it's simply all part of the gig, and once they are "off the clock" they act like more or less normal people. It opens so many opportunities for fun interactions and characterisation when the villian can say they aren't there to cause trouble and are just buying their groceries like anybody else. Venture Bros did this well, and the book series "Cape High" has masterful world building based on a very different relationship between villains and heros.

Any scene that involves poker always gets me hyped. The execution of the perfect bluff or ungodly luck will always be exciting when you build it right.

You're one of the few and best in this. Other comic book shorts channels don't even show which comics they took the information from... It's infuriating.

I agree on enjoying seeing heroes hang in their off time. We come to expect action as the default, so it makes a nice shake up, and we get to see characterization and interactions brought to the forefront. And sure, fights let writers characterize, but seeing them just living their lives offers insights you don't get from fights.

The greatest Win Spider-Man ever earned in anything ever. Donating hundreds of thousands of Kingpin's money to charity, followed by a victory lap of laughing all the way home to MJ. I like to imagine that to this day, Kingpin can still hear the sound of Peter laughing through the busy New York streets.

Number 1 rule to playing card games. Never assume you're the best player at the table.

Don't know why, but personally have a soft spot for when enemies can find common ground. Also fairly hilarious given spidy who has tangoed with kingpin time and time again took his money so easily. At least it was for a GOOD cause after all and unlike usual kingpin played fair and square and was a man of his word.

I'm glad stories like this exist. it gives a bit more humanity to the characters. Kingpin looking like a fool is just the bonus.

I love how I read every kingpin line in Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk voice. Love getting to see this comic as well. It's always wonderful when we get to see the heroes being down to earth, being human. Good pacing for the pages too. Fast enough to keep you hooked, but slow enough to read and pause if necessary. Also, is this the same comic series where spiderman was actually banned from playing poker with other heroes? Due to his spider sense making it impossible to win?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the one specific reason Spidey doesn't normally attend these is because he isn't invited for fear his spider sense gives him an advantage, which it doesn't because it never activates for people he doesn't consider a threat

This is likely before that’s established. And his spider sense warns of all dangers to his well-being, including his financial well-being when gambling (at least after this story but possibly during too)

I would think in a friendly game, his sense wouldn't kick in. Non threats shouldn't kick it in to much either I would think, like a hug

The best stories, in my opinion, are the ones where we can just see our favorite heroes and villains just be and act like normal people.

the greatest thing about this isnt that its a poker game or that there isnt any world ending stakes but the fact that in the end, Spider-man isnt getting fucked over per usual.

I know Kingpin likes to have big dick energy moments, but MAN, his plan of angering Dr Strange, sorcerer supreme, protector of the multiverse, magic user with enough magic to make him and everyone he loves disappear without a trace, Human torch the living star, Invisible Woman the strongest Fantastic Four member, Mr Fantastic tied for the smartest being not only on earth but the universe, The thing, a guy who grew up in the bad streets and is ready to throw down, Black Cat, on again off again anti-hero with luck powers and willingness to kill (Sometimes at least), Spider-man, a guy who would humiliate him in 10 different ways if he ever stopped holding back etc, and thinking they wouldn't just erase his memory and steal his shit after saying he'd use it for bad reasons, was ill thought of to say the least, specially when you consider many of them there (Dr Strange, Black Cat, Mr Fantastic etc) have have been shown willing to do some BAD stuff with the right motivation

FINALLY A HAPPY ENDING FOR SPIDER-MAN (let’s not talk about the ending🤫)
