Equipment is pretty good now but Peter's observations are certainly relevant to wedding discos in the 80's. Most cheap mobile jocks had those Fal (should have been called foul) twin deck units you could buy in the John Moores catalogue for about £200. The sound quality was just terrible. The DJ's thought they were good but they were always dreadful at mixing and as he says, talked too much garbled self-indulgent nonsense. Their lighting would consist of two home-made wooden light boxes with their disco name on the front, a light rope, one of those lights that projects colours on the ceiling and one of those four-colour light boxes with bulbs that flash in sequence. Only the 'posh' ones would have a strobe. I went to one wedding where the DJ got paralytic and started singing loudly over every record. It ended up with about 95% of the guests out in the car park because nobody could stand it anymore. Those guys were a breed.
