The backstory involving the tracking and eventual capture of Gollum is a pretty big part of confirming that Bilbo's Ring is indeed the One Ring. It's 19 years from a Long Expected Party to when Frodo sets out in the book. In the movie it seems Gandalf is only gone a few weeks. But Gandalf says that, "I looked everywhere for the creature Gollum, but the enemy found him first." We could also see Thranduil again if this story covers Gollum in Mirkwood. Then there's the tales of Gollum being "some new terror abroad, a ghost that drank blood. It climbed trees to find nests; it crept into holes to find the young; it slipped through windows...."

I was simply gratified that the visions which came into my head in the late 70's the first time I picked up those three books were so amazingly rendered by Peter and his crew. It helped that many of the actors were passionate Tolkien readers. Viggo made suggestions and adjustments to his own costume to make himself look more like a ranger who really lives rough and has to repair his own gear all the time. He nailed the "genuine but not sappy" character of Aragorn, too. Him and Frodo parting ways is one of his best moments.

How much content do they have to work with? The search for Gollum was quarter of a chapter in LOTRTFOTR. They will have to fill in with the complete fleshed out back story of Sméagol to Gollum, then end with the escape of Gollum from Thranduils prisons. Peter Jackson will go from condensing a mega epic into a trilogy film, to expanding parts of two chapters into an entire story. It will be hard to do without straying from the lore.

Yes they will. Which is probably by design. They don't want to tell a story with a ton of source material as this will allow them to completely write the story THEY want. (Probably one with a healthy dose of "modern audiences" content injected)

Andy Serkis is long overdue for an honorary Oscar due to his ground breaking motion capture acting. He did it first and did it so well it allowed movies to expand the stories that can be told. Andy also did it for more than one character. He did Kong and Caesar.

So very exciting. I don’t think it’s going to be a let down like The Rings of Power being that the old crew is back. Some people are saying that re-exploring Gollum is kind of lazy and we know enough about him to move on. I get why they are featuring his character because he is someone everyone is familiar with and it can tie in the timeline after The Hobbit and before LOTR. Hopefully we can finally see Elrond twins as I do recall them being part of this timeline.

@@SpaceTravel1776With how he handled the original trilogy, though not 1:1, I trust Jackson to make a quality fanfiction. Thats kind of the beauty: when there's established lore you have to choose what to keep, what to omit, how to organize every shot to fit the vision of the writing. Fanfiction however is an independent work so he can get as creative (within reason) as he feels is necessary, and there isnt much in the way of established or conflicting lore to call him out for violating. I'm apprehensively excited; so many movies have let me down in the past 14+ years, I'm hoping this puts all that disappointment to rest.

Finally awesome Lotr news. That is a killer team coming back.. Masterful creators and by the sounds of it, back in our yard!! 🇳🇿
I would love to see more movies and/or shows about characters like Gollum because I see it as a way to understand the characters more. I can see a lot of discussions coming from it (i.e., this is how the One Ring tempted Isildur, which prevented him from throwing it into Mt. Doom). Sure, Gollum is a villain in LOTR, but a movie/show going further into his backstory could help us understand why he is a villain, how the Ring corrupted him and all that. There's so much lore in Tolkien's work and there are a ton of possible movies and shows you can make. As long as it's faithful to the books and everything from the acting to the production is of the highest quality, I'll be one happy Tolkien fan.
Excited that og crew is back, I hope they learned all the right lessons from Hobbit trilogy. TBH, not the first story I was hoping from greater Middle-Earth mythology and it will be really difficult to live up to LOTR with inevitable comparisons of the two. As for the casting, I don't know what to think. De-aged Viggo or new, younger actor? I cannot imagine someone else playing Aragorn and somewhat, I don't think anyone should. I guess sir Ian McKellen can reprise his role.
I also don't like the fact that they took the title. I'm sure they knew of that fan film. I hope they gave the makers credit.
So very excited and curious about the Cast.

Arathorn (his father) was killed when Aragorn was only 2. As Aragorn was a toddler at the time they would need to introduce a pretty big retcon to even consider having Arathorn in flashbacks interacting with Aragorn in any meaningful way.
The movie we neither needed or deserved. But hopefully NZ can get some good PR and jobs out of this...
My dad introduced me to The Lord of the Rings in 05/06. Since then I have been hooked. Can't wait for these.
Now I need andy serkis saying "one way ouuuut" in Gollum's voice

Not sure. Like that crew but why do we need this story told and not something very different in the Third Age? Well can't be worse than utter dogcrap RoP.
So long as WB doesn't meddle with this like they did with the Hobbit movies, I think this is excellent news. Calling this a golden-age for Tolkien content though I think is really premature seeing as the last time we saw something that purported itself to be Tolkien was RoP and its apparently not going to be leaving anytime soon. Fortunately, these new announcements have nothing to do with Amazon and that in and of itself is a major plus. I think I would prefer they bring back the original cast and use de-aging technology to make them appear younger. Recasting the characters would be a perilous exercise.
"Cinematic universes have been overplayed" is quite an understatement.
Great news and a fantastic story. Besides the hunt for Gollum they could also jump to some scenes that were left out in Peter Jacksons movies. I am thinking about The old forest and Tombadil and the barrow heights. These actually took place during Gandalfs journey. Or show us more about the departure from the shire which were so beautifully described in Tolkien's books. E.g.when the hobbit met farmer maggot. This could also help to really fill the movie with the actual lore rather than inventing stuff that never happened
As long as it sticks to the original content and has absolutely no interference from the studio executives, I'm cautiously optimistic.
As long as the OG gang is creating ot then I have no doubt it'll be good. I do wish we get a morgoth TV or trilogy at some point tho with Peter behind it

We don't need another RoP.

They actually used a different Norse phonetic which gives if a different meaning. Nothing less from the experts of Tolkien. ❤
I'm soooo worried 😢... but the most excited I've been since return hit theaters. Holding my breath 😖
My first thought on the "Hunt for Gollum" movie : Excitement at 1st glance. But after thinking a bit of skepticism. Here's why. It is bound to involve heavily at least 3 major characters from the original trilogy, of whom we already have their "hero's (or antihero) journey" in there. We also know where these characters are going to be headed as characters by the end of the film. So it's going to be very difficult to make an epic and satisfying ending that also ties to the trilogy as well, without having to go off script and invent something possibly lore breaking and ridiculous in order to make it a film worth of standing on its own. Aragorn begins in the trilogy as a very reluctant heir to the throne , which makes him the most difficult character to write a good film ending for. Him ending up withdrawing from his heritage and being a ranger makes for a poor heroic ending to a film. Gandalf is a much mor interesting Tolkien character to explore his past before the trilogy because he has a very long one. However, given that the title implies a very limited time pocket, it's doubtful that they will be exploring much of his past in it. Plus the two previous trilogies have already set up his finding that 1) Sauron is back and 2) the Ring is Frodo's ring, so I don't really understand what big event or finding is there for Gandalf to go through that we don't already know. Plus Ian McKellen is guite old. Don't get me wrong, I love love LOVE 💕 Ian McKellen as Gandalf, I'm just worried that the wear might be too obvious in both posture and movement (movie magic can fix faces nowadays). As far as Gollum is concerned, delving into his past may be quite interesting, but the question still remains: if we've already seen his origin story and his final purpose, what else is there to excite us and how will the film about him have a satisfying grand finale? Plus, as another commenter already mentioned, the hunt for Gollum partly failed, as "the enemy found him first", so how does this set up a grand finale? All the above questions are impossible for me to answer. However, what gives me hope that it won't be a mid movie in all intended purposes, is that the team involved is the best it could possibly be and that given enough freedom to produce in their own schedule, they've proven they can do wonders and can certainly surprise us with things we haven't thought of. So I'm going to be very cautiously optimistic about it
Really excited for this film
What I always wondered is how Andy serkis managed to stalk me throughout my life from the age of 4 when I first read my favourite book through the various adaptations such as the BBC play and throughout managed to read my mind in order to bring gollum to life exactly as I imagined him. So excited for this.
Is there resources for more info on what happened during the hunt?
Why do it? We have seen Aragorn sacrifice a lot to undo the wrongs of his ancestors so how can seeing him doing it again (18 years earlier) be that meaningful. Doesn't that sabotage his later pledges given that he had already promised to do the same sort of thing? And what can Gollum do that is film worthy; lie again, deceive, break promises, have a moment of being ordinary (or eat babies - something he might have done). We know he is a damaged creature but that losing the ring actually made him a bit braver yet I cannot see how any meaningful arc can be devised for him; all he has is maybe a temporary relief from his torment that is unfortunately re-energized to an even worst state later; but that is something we have already seen in the films.
I am hoping for the best.
The only downfall to this news is as a huge horror movie fan and especially Peter Jackson's early work is that Us in the horror Community have to wait even longer now for Peter Jackson to restore his early splatter films for bluray/4k releases.
POINTLESS CASH GRAB!
As long as he learned his lesson after the Hobbit movies, it could be good. The fan made Hunt For Gollum was good
It would be amazing if Ian, Viggo and Orlando joined in on this!
As long as they TAKE THEIR TIME with it unlike they RUSHED the Hobbit, this will ROCK
I have to admit I'm much more cynical about this. I don't know if I'm really keen on an entire movie about Gollum. I'm pretty content with his role in the Hobbit and LotR. I'm also thinking that this is a bit of a desperate reach for WB, trying to find one of the most recognizable characters from the earlier films with the most marketability. Like, imagine if they did another Star Wars trilogy just about Baby Yoda? I just don't know how excited I'm going to be to go watch WB's next paycheck. Now, I get that they're getting a lot of the original staff, and having Serkis direct does make a lot of sense. I also haven't seen that fan film. I just kinda wish we would focus on new Middle-Earth stories instead of just finding the most profitable characters and making more stories about them. I get that it's hard to find new story ideas when they don't have access to the Silmarillion, but a Gollum movie just feels like a cheap idea. (Not that a good movie can't be made with a cheap idea, of course.) FWIW, I am looking forward to the anime film The War of the Rohirrim, and I do want to watch the second season of Rings of Power (season 1 was fine, but there was definite room for improvement; here's hoping it does). I know there might be more stuff to look forward to, but there is still a danger of over-saturation. Honestly, I would prefer to see other fantasy series and worlds be given a shot on the big screen, but I guess risk-averse corporations like WB don't want to commit to such things. 😕
I think this is a good way to go. And we could definitely see Viggo and Ian back. As well as many others related to this story. Whether that’s Arwen and the sons of Elrond, Thranduil and the Mirkwood elves, maybe even random characters like Radagast. Lots of potential options for this.
This is great, a safe pair of hands that has a lot of respect for Tolkien and the Lore. Hopefully WB giving Amazon compitition in the LOTR-department will force them to improve the show and force the Tolkien society to give Amazon more rights to make the show more lore-accurate.
This movie actually excites me.
I'm exited, but I'm also nervous! I hope they do a good job in the casting and really find actors who are passionate about the lore and the story and can bring just as much to the screen as the original actors did.
This story seems ideally suited to the visual medium of film, as much of it can be told visually with a minimum of dialogue, especially if they include Gollum's journey from the Misty Mountains to Mordor, which would make a wonderful solo acting vehicle for Andy Serkis. As for the potential recasting of other characters, Jackson and company have always been brilliant at casting, so I'm sure they'll make great choices if it comes to that. As long as they don't try to make it too long (2 hours would be sufficient) or insert unnecessary action to make it more "epic," this could potentially be a great "appendix" to the original trilogy, and possibly the first of many "appendices." I never thought that I would be excited about new LOTR movies, but I'm (cautiously) getting there. The tale of Aragorn and Arwen would make a nice follow-up if this one succeeds.
So cool to have read Lotr, the hobbit and Silmarillion 15 years before the first PJ movie. For me the the first movie is by far the best.
Well the best team in on the case. You should also add Fran's name to the title. She wrote some of the best lines in OT.
The gang, or much of the gang from the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies. I love it, this is what we need. I love both trilogies they did, as well as a lot of the work done by PJ, FW, PB, and AS outside of Middle Earth.
I hope they recast and not de-age. I would have preferred a Silmarillion tale, but let’s just wait and see…
If it is going to be a DEI special, then it will be a hard pass. If they are using him to sell us on a cloaked DEI special that will be sad.
Which is why I quickly downloaded the excellent fan film "The Hunt for Gollum" off youtube before Hollywood scrubs it from the site citing "infringement" even though it was made all the way back in between Fellowship and Two Towers. Watch it while you can.
I hope reality matches your optimism.
Would love someone to make a film of the book The Children of Hurin. That would be pic!

@@Makkaru112 it's Charlie Hopkinson and he's so good at natural voice imitation + visual AI that he must prominently state "DEEPFAKE PARODY" in his videos to avoid getting sued. He could do this entire enterprise and save the movie execs millions!
I'm being cautiously excited for this. The Hobbit trilogy was really not up there with LOTR for me and it was again the same ensemble. Hope it turns out better this time.
Some interesting possible stories would include "the war in the north" maybe 4th age post lord of the rings, I would have said young Aragorn's adventures but I feel that would be far better in a TV format.
Why not stories from The Silmarillion?? Cinema gold! Soooo much potential!

@@haukionkannel no way, the people involved in this movie love Tolkien. We just have to hope the studio doesn't make dumb demands
WB hasn't produced any movies that I either love or hate recently. If they really give the team the reigns, and the studio doesn't make them force messages down our throat, this could be really good. Not sure if a Gollum movie should have been the starting point though.
I feel like that we may (hopefully) get Viggo back as Aragorn without the need for de-aging effects. For The Hobbit trilogy, I believe they did not do any de-aging for Ian McKellen (albeit he is an old wizard haha) and just solely went with how Ian acted the part to make it work so I would think that it is definitely possible to get Viggo back in the same way.
If a Middle Earth universe series is going to be a thing, like Star Wars and Marvel, Id love to see the 3 great tales of the First Age. Beren and Luthien, The Children of Hurin, and The Fall of Gondolin
Hunt for gollum sooooo Viggo's Aragorn hopefully!

Whelp. I hope it's good. Will see.
I never skip scenes in the LOTR movies, but the scenes where I come closest are the Gollum scenes in the Two Towers.

@@ponedog I agree, even when reading the books, I find Gollum the most exhausting character.
I'm sure they'll do a cracking job and I have faith that they'll respect Tolkien. I wish them good luck and that it succeeds for them. However, I am one of those from before The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and my overriding memory was confusion over the changes. After that was slight annoyance over many people not reading the book and thinking this was the story. Fortunately, there are those who took it as an invite into Tolkien's world, and it gave us some great KZread channels. What I did get from the films was the passion, amount of work it took and the journeys they all took to complete it. I also know that I couldn't even think of making anything as monumental - but that's what our imaginations are for, and Peter Jackson's trilogy couldn't approach that.
Reminds me of the quote from Hobbit 3. “Theres some ranger you should meet him”
I don't know how I feel about this, really. I want so much for it to be phenomenal, but...I just haven't got a clue if I trust more adaptions, even in such a near and dear franchise to my heart as LOTR.
I can't wait. Wish they would have never ended to begin with. But there is only so much content they can work with I guess.
Sss..ss..Yes Precious More Filmses by Jacksons...We wants it Precious...
I was really hoping it was going to be about Melkor.. oh well this is still good news
More Legolas and Thranduil, more Gollum and Aragorn….Yes!
I would love to see a biographical movie about Aragorn. I really hoped he'd appear in the first Hobbit film as 10 year old Estel in Rivendell.
