I don't trust anyone but Pete Jackson to direct anything related to lord of the rings, but no. Tolkien works should be left as they are, we don't need anymore adaptations and misdoings. It's more important that we have the books, and the stories as they were written.

Bilbo definitely has more willpower than frodo I must say, I think he should've been placed higher than frodo.. and if we take into the silmarrilion I would say glorfindel is definitely the strongest of the elves on this list. Not even close.

Yeah no, I'm sorry. I'm not even remotely hopeful, other than that I really hope they don't continue making this garbage. They disrespected our beloved fanbase, tried to silence us, and now they are trying to play us like fools. No. I will not support this.

I think the problem here is that you try to scale the powers of Middle Earth rather than approaching it from the nature of each object and being. They just don't scale well, if at all. It is Ungoliant's fundamental nature to devour light and expel darkness. If she can do so to the light of the Two Trees, which are the source of the Silmarils' light and greater, she can certainly do so to the Silmarils themselves.

Technology did advance. Men evolved from primitive hunter-gatherers of First Age into agricultural communities and learned animal husbandry, smithcraft, winemaking, nautical technology, medicine, work leather and masonry, develop written language, made books, etc. In 7000 years mankind transitioned from paleolithic into a medieval era. If by comparison we take technological developments of our world from 10.000 B.C-0 B.C, ours was slower technological progress. Furthermore Middle-Earth's developments is even more impressive, as this time had multiple periods of Dark Ages, where previous knowledge was lost for good. At the end of Third Age, Hobbits had clocks, Mordor had gunpowder (that Saruman copied) and Elves and Dwarves had had their own technological developments.

The Silmarils, while fantastic, are only echos of the majesty of the Two Trees, just as the Phial of Galadriel is an echo of Earendil. So if Ungoliant was able to devour the Trees of Light (the "Valar's Ring" to so speak) then she'd have no problem with the lesser Silmarils. Remember the Trees were also blessed and hallowed by all the Valar, and would logically have more spiritual holiness/defenses than the Silmarils.

I don't think Ungoliant can break the Silmarils. As stated in the Second Prophecy of Mandos, the Silmarils can only be broken after the Dagor Dagorath. At this point, I think one can speculate about the influence of the Silmarils on Ungoliant based on the influence of one of them on Carcaroth.

If Balrogs can drive her off, then no, she can't "devour" them. She can swallow them but not consume them.

No, Gothmog is neither an orc nor a Nazgul. It is explicitly stated in the books that he was not an orc, and after the Witch King's demise Khamul becomes the lord of the Nazgul, so if Gothmog who was the Witch King's second in command was a Nazgul than it makes no sense at all that Khamul steps over him to become the Witch King's successor. This much is fact.

The two trees were described as living beings. Melkor pierced the trees with his spear, their sap ran and Ungoliant drank the sap, stuck her beak in the trees and drained them of life and light and poisoned them (credit to Robert @ In Deep Geek who also did an episode on Ungoliant). The Silmarils are jewels crafted with light from the two trees. What is the nature of the Silmarils? Is the light of the two trees encased in some sort of inorganic matter, such as adamant? If Ungoliant was able to consume them, would she be able to feed on the light until it went out? Or would they simply be trapped, radiating their light within her? Was Carcharoth a werewolf in the flesh? When he bit off Beren's hand and the Silmaril with it, it burned him on the inside but also made him more powerful. What was the nature of Ungoliant? What gave her form? Scary thought: The Silmarils, their light protected in gem-like structures would never dim, but keep feeding her darkness making her more powerful. Gorging herself, because even the Silmarils couldn't satisfy her, until she finally implodes. Great topic. So many ways to spin it 🕷🕸

I feel like the Silmarils would have been her last meal, and Morgoth would have reclaimed them from her ashes. The story would have run mostly the same for the rest of the First Age, but later events would have been significantly changed by the absence of her offspring from the timeline.

Interesting and well done overall. Only question is why no Smaug in the rankings? I know he was only in The Hobbit so if only going with LOTR trilogy I get it, but was one of the most menacing characters in the larger story. Smaug was the "Sauron" of The Hobbit.

Well, i was thinking that ungoliant could devour them but you changed my mind. I think you’re right in that ungoliant would not even be able to eat them in the first place as some fate or destiny would transpire to prevent that from even happening. Even if that wasn’t the case, if ungoliant ate even one silmaril i would think that it would burn her to ash from the inside out.

Fingolfin, and Finarfin are extremely powerful, IMO. Mainly because of the combination of Noldorian royal blood of Finwe and the Vanyarian royal blood of Ingwe’s niece. They were the best of both Nolder/Vanyar. Fëanor is a one-off exception. He’s the most powerful of all.

Thank you for addressing this question that has long vexed me. Summation as to why Sauron was so much more powerful than others of his species: 1) he started more powerful (some people just have more oomph), 2) he was a polymath (dude worked on his resume), 3) he had no qualms against using his power egregiously (whereas the other of his species were adamantly hobbled by the Valar), 4) he rather cornered the market on the naughty shit.

Ungoliant consumed the light the Two Trees, which was the source of the light within the Silmarils, without going mad. If she was able to do that, I don't see any reason why she wouldn't be able to do t he same with Feanor's jewels.

Bilbo willingly gave up the ring. He is S tier. Or at least A. Slaying the witch king by happenstance over resisting the burden of the ring for so long and then willingly relinquishing it, is power.

Thank you for an informative and entertaining video. I enjoy LOTR lore mostly through recent movies but also growing up in the 1970’s had an awareness of the cartoon too. This is a fascinating topic and although I’m no expert on the lore, I wonder if those who “choose” their elf half rather than human half upon arriving in the Undying Lands, might have indeed physically/magically transformed into full elves thereby not breaking any rules? A human part of them indeed dies or moves on to its afterlife while the elf component of their “spirit” remains unchanged. Sort of a reverse Tuvix. Thanks again.

Tolkien witnessed technology doing more harm than good (the explosives of WW1 cost more lives short-term, whereas fertilizers saved more but at a far slower pace). In a way, the Third Age is sorta akin to a Fallout or Metro Redux game: the technology of before had devastated the world as it once was; just like the War of Wrath had sunk Beleriand. Much like the collapse of the Bronze Age, high-tech societies collapsed and their secrets were lost. This happened ~3000 years ago, and although the Roman Empire was also somewhat technologically advanced, it really took the Renaissance to even get to a point from which the Industrial Revolution could kick off. Human technology has advanced more in the last 200 years than in the 20k years before then... And Tolkien arguably missed most of it. (if you compare the technology of 1970 to today's computer-driven machining/3D printing, and especially if you consider medical advances like MRI scanners and software/AI that can figure out how proteins fold, it's truely insane - technology is still advancing exponentially) The Third Age can be seen as taking place in one of these technologically 'stagnant' periods in human history :)

But along this same vein, with men and dwarves having closer ties at this point, when the dwarves of Moria eventually dug down to the Balrog and the place went empty, would they have gone to humanity for aid in retaking it? How poorly would it have gone? Would humans of the time have mentioned this plan to the wizards and asked for their aid? Or how would Bilbo and the Dwarves' journey have gone? Would the goblins of the mountains simply have not been as big a threat (or not present there at all)? Would the dwarves and Bilbo wound up starving in Mirkwood with no elves to arrest and feed them? Would the Lonely Mountain and the city of Dale have been better defended when Smaug arrived and could they have slain him instead of the city being destroyed and the mountain being taken by him?

She could have devoured them, just like a Human can drink Salt Water. It would have caused problems for her, and her body's reaction would have been to remove the item, or die from it. Digested and Metabolized them? No.
