So hard, Being boring, Suburbia, Miracles, I'm with stupid, Can you forgive her?, Always on my mind, You only tell me you love me when you're drunk are just the tip of an iceberg of monumental, exceptionally strong hits.

Love this song! A young Dusty Springfield had several hits, starting in the mid-1960s, such as "Wishin' and Hopin' " and "I Only Want to Be With You" and "Son of a Preacher Man." Dusty was the Adele of the 1960s in Britain. :-) This 1987 duet with the Pet Shop Boys was 20-some years into her career and was a big hit, too.

Dusty was a true legend with an amazing career in the UK especially during the 60’s and 70’s with her own tv show inviting alot of black artists which was unique at the time. She then left the business for awhile and basically disappeared until PSB invited her on this project. It took some coaxing but she finally agreed. Good thing too since it gave her a second career with a new soloalbum (produced by PSB).

Dusty had become a recluse in a trailer park in the U.S. when they wrote it they wouldn’t take no for an answer, other female singers put themselves up for it, but they said “no it’s Dusty or no one”! It resurrected her career. I remember seeing them in concert and they did this after her passing, she was on a big screen behind them doing her bit. Lump in the throat!

Hi Derek! If you're going to listen to Dusty, I defintely recommend you listen to the "Dusty in Memphis" album. Her voice was absolutely amazing, and it's filled with great songs. Her entire catalog is wonderful, but "Memphis" was the best album she ever released (and is also considered one of the best albums of all time). As for the Pet Shop Boys, a group I've followed for almost 40 years now, I'd definitely start with "West End Girls", their debut single and still one of their most iconic songs, and "It's A Sin" is also fantastic (especially considering its revolutionary for its time gay subtext, like "Father forgive me; I tried not to do it. Turned over a new leaf, then tore right through it"). But if you are interested in going deeper, I would definitely recommend listening to album tracks like "The Way It Used To Be" and "King Of Rome" from the Yes album, "Only The Wind" and "My October Symphony" ("It's so bemusing ; will they cancel the parade? We marched each October, now they say we were never even saved. We must be very brave.") from their Behavior album, and my favorite song - and one that most fans would probablyput in their top five even though it wasn't a big hit - "Being Boring". The video, directed by Bruce Weber, is extraordinary, but the lyrics - "Now I sit with different faces in rented rooms and foreign places. All the people I was kissing, some are here and some are missing in the Nineteen-Nineties. I never dreamt that I would get to be the creature that I always meant to be, but I thought in spite of dreams, you'd be sitting somewhere here with me" - break my heart every single time I listen to this perfect song. Yeah, I love the Pet Shop Boys, LOL.

Dusty was a 60s Icon; the Aretha of the British blue-eyed soul genre. She was what Allison Moyet was to the 80s, and what Adele is today. At that time she had been retired for a decade or so. The Pet Shop boys coaxed her back to sing this song, reviving her career before she died years later.

If you are going to start a Pet Shop Boys journey you are going to be in for an amazing sonic adventure. You should start where almost everyone else who loves PSB started which is “West End Girls” and “It’s A Sin”. In my journey my favorite albums have been “Very” and “Electric” and based upon what I’ve seen you say in your reaction videos I think their “Electric” album will definitely be right up your alley, particularly the tracks “Axis”, “Love Is A Bourgeois Construct”, “Thursday” and “Vocal”. Dusty Springfield was a British pop artist in the 60's in the UK, Europe and US. She was known for her cover of Motown hits and did backup vocals for popular Black female groups. She had exiled herself to the US in the late 70's as her popularity waned. Pet Shop Boys did this collaboration in 1989 which resulted in a come back for Dusty. Look up interviews with Neil Tennant discussing their success with Dusty. Both artists had a huge following in gay culture.

First off lemme say, that i m very pleased to see a young dude appreciating an 80s song ...the 80s were in fact very sophisticated years for music, where th concept of pop song reached its peaks by having literally Monsters in Music ( i m talking about Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Aha, The Cure,Depeche Mode, Bronski Beat/Communards and alot more) who developed the song format by addng various influences to it ( from soul to jazzy, disco,Rock, dark, new wave and much more) ...but the secret was the arrangements.....in 3/4 minutes you could experiences wonders in dynamics, research of sounds, new techniques developed through the years (when Depeche Mode began it was the about 81 and the newest keyboards were still primitive stuff, but still they managed to create "just can't get enough") and ,most of all, real enthusiasm and naivety..... talking about the Pet Shop boys, yes, they are Legendary...since the came out with "West end girls"check this song out immediately ,pls they created a "before" and an "after" Pet Shop Boys, for it was unique and new....during the years they produced several great songs " love comes quickly, opportunities, suburbia, it's a sin, domino dancing and many many more) where they refined their sound record after record.. always being classy and stylish....i d like to mention a couple songs from their biggest perios, which are majestic to me ....West End Girls, Suburbia, Left to my own Devices, It's Alright, Being Boring....check these 5 songs and tell me ,what do you think about them ..... and thanx for the vibe...seeing you getting into the song made me remember, how great it felt, when i heard it myself first

I don't know why this video popped up in my recommendations, but I'm glad I watched it simply because it said "React to Pet Shop Boys." Your channel is the second of two that I've seen so far of your age group reacting to 80s music... And it makes me happy to see the positive reactions from you all. The Pet Shop Boys came out just as I was entering my teens... I'm a full blooded 80s kid! As far as duets such as this one, you can fill your channel with reaction videos for months just by the masterpieces we had back then of duets alone. Dig in, it's a journey worth taking. But, back in the 80s, songs and their music videos both told stories. We had radios to listen to the music and we had such things called, MTV and Friday Night Videos that satisfied our craving for the arts of music videos. This is the first of your videos I have seen so far... I will watch more soon.. But, thank you for paying homage to the best era for entertainment in my opinion. The 80s gave us the best gifts of music, music videos, and movies in that 10 year span. I don't care what anyone says... The 80s were a work of art that faded through the decades following.

Brilliant choice here, and a wonderful song by PSB and Dusty. Late 80s and it was the last hit for Dusty before she died in 1999. Dusty is a royalty UK 50/60s song mistress who had tons of hits around the world and many number 1s. She fought and hid her being a Lesbian her whole life until she met PSB. She said that PSB gave her the opportunity to sing a type of song that she had always wanted to do but never really had the chance. She said that she absolutely loved working with Neil and Chris. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are The Pet Shop Boys. Neil is the tall, curly haired vocalist who's much more talkative than his friend Chris who is the synthesizer whiz-kid. Chris is admittedly a bit shy.

The woman who wrote this song is the same that wrote Earth Wind & Fire's Boogie wonderland, Allee Willis, she died just a few years ago. She explains the process of writing this song in a video out there on YT (same with Boogie wonderland), she was quite unique, eccentric and obviously super talented haha.

I wanted to add since you love her voice in this. When she came into the studio to record this she asked what they wanted her to sound like and they told her "Just sing like Dusty Springfield" because they were both fans of her work in the 60s. And yes, all of PSB's songs are like this in terms of their use of strings, synths, and production, so I recommend so many of their other songs, including their new stuff!

This is so true of Dusty. If you are interested in the operatic & melodramatic gestures she uses which really add to her performance - see this book. DUSTY : queen of the post-mods / Annie J. Randall. There is a whole chapter on them. From a 19th century tradtion and convention in acting and opera singing.

Hey Dereck! It's my first time on your channel and I'm already hooked! Your excitement and analysis for this GREAT track, particularly about the ingenious layering of the vocals, is spot on. This was indeed new ground for Dusty. The Pet Shop Boys brought her into the 80s, bringing her a whole new crop of fans and deservedly so. I love love love this song. :) If you haven't already, you should check out the collaboration they did with Liza Minnelli on her 1989 album "Results", which they produced, similarly bringing Liza into the world of 80s synth pop. The stand-out tracks are "Losing My Mind" and "Twist In My Sobriety". Cheers and keep up the great work!! William :)

Pet Shop Boys have been releasing great pop music for more than 35 years and have 14 awesome albums plus several remix albums (the first "Disco" album is AMAZING!). Gay themes have been present in their music all along but most frequently in a universal context. I agree with those reviewers that suggest the Liza Minelli album, which was an homage to PSB music. "Rent" "Heart" "It's a Sin" "Domino Dancing" "West End Girls" are some of the most prominent songs from the 80s. "Introspective" is probably my favorite album, such lush instrumentals and arrangements, but many of their albums from the 21st century have become favorites, as well. "Yes" "Electric" "Super" are all fantastic. My mother, who is in her 70s, has all the PSB songs on her phone and listens to them while walking and gardening. They are her favorite group. My mother's favorite song is "Miracles," which is really beautiful and poignant, on of their more delicate songs with wonderful swells in the music.

You are correct that this isn't typically Dusty Springfield's genre. She is a British pop/soul legend whose biggest hits were in the 1960s. She sang a lot of big pop ballads, but she also loved Motown and was heavily influenced by American soul music. Her most renowned album is probably 'Dusty in Memphis' (worth a listen in its entirety). The Pet Shop Boys wanted to work with her in 1987 for this song and it resurrected her career. Her 1990 album, 'Reputation' includes some songs produced by The Pet Shop Boys and Heaven 17. I recommend reacting to the title track, produced by Heaven 17; it's a great, upbeat song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6uZsppqcaicdbw.html Sadly, Dusty Springfield passed away from cancer in 1999, but her legendary voice and influence live on.

Neil and Chris (the Petshop Boys) contributed to Dusty Springfield's 1990 comeback album "Reputation". This is the Petshop Boys during their imperial phase. This song is taken from their second album, "Actually". They would outgrow this phase well and truly with the release of their 1988 and 1990 follow up albums (Introspective and Behaviour, respectfully). Another single from "Actually" you're bound to enjoy is "It's A Sin". The Petshop Boys are still active having released their most recent album, "Hotspot" earlier this year.
