Dusty was in a bad place when Pet Shop Boys contacted her. Her self esteem was pretty low and she didn't trust anyone. When she heard West End Girls on the radio she decided to do it (PSB wrote it for their first album). When she was in the studio she asked what she should sound like and they responded: "like Dusty".
You noticed some key things about Dusty. She was a British pop star who felt stifled and recorded the classic R and B- influenced ‘Dusty in Memphis’. Perfect voice for that kind of music. Her vocals and how she shaped the song, adding twists to the later verses, that’s her trademark.
Dusty Springfield is a legend. This song was released in 1987 and revitalized her career. She was a 60s-era British pop singer and was heavily influenced by American r&b music. You should definitely give her album, 'Dusty in Memphis' a listen; it's one of my favorite albums of all time. As for this particular song, it's one of my favorites from the 80s. I LOL'd at your comment that the 'What have I, what have I...' line would get stuck in your head...I've felt that way for 35 years now! :) Also, the Pet Shop Boys would go on to produce one of Dusty Springfield's 1990s albums. Sadly, she passed away in 1999. Her legacy remains and her music is worth a deep dive, from the big ballads of the 60s to her more dance-oriented music in the early 90s.
My EXACT same reaction back in 1988 when the song came out. Amazing duet!
A truly amazing sound pet shop boys are brilliant but dusty made this song she is a true icon the best female singer to come out of uk
Yessss!!! Wonderful song! And Dusty adds that extra spark doesn't she. Can't wait till you hear West End Girls. Cheers Seph!! 🍷🍷🍷🍷
Brings back great memories from my teens this tune...
Such a greeeeeeeeeeat song ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ And it’s fun to play “who is singing what” in this song
SEPH, The Pet Shop Boys have always had a good sound, regardless of the song. Dusty Springfield is a "goddess" in my opinion, with her beauty, and her sultry voice, which I love. She's a fantastic performer on her own. Please react to "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"; and "Son Of A Preacher Man"...both fantastic songs! THANK YOU!
Dusty’s song I Only Wanna Be With You was covered by Samantha Fox in the 80’s, who’s also a Brit. It’s worth checking out.

Samantha Fox was on my wall as a teen and I actually got to meet her in Birmingham once! That rabbit hole would be fun! Touch Me: Naughty Girls Need Love too!: I wanna have some fun!
You should check out Neil and Dusty singing this song live at the 1988 Brit Awards. They were perfect together, really meshed well on stage...and you could tell they were enjoying the performance.

Further, the PSB did two more songs with Dusty, 'Nothing Has Been Proved' and 'In Private' Good songs.
Dusty’s part was co-written with Alle Willis who wrote Boogie Wonderland for Earth Wind & Fire!
Loved your reaction :) It's just amazing how this collaboration revived Dusty's career. I love her Reputation album very much. You should check it out, my favourite song from it is Daydreaming.
Dusty Springfield top UK singer many great hits in the 60s.A timeless voice.
One of my favorite song when i was 12, before i discovered shake the disease and after that violator of the best band in the world 😁
Dusty Springfield had a legit career in the 60s, and was apparently one of Neil's favorite artists growing up. He'd always wanted to record with her. Fast fwd to the 80s, Dusty is down and out, I think drug addicted, and basically on skid row living in a dive motel. Neil got her to record this song with him, and somewhat revived her dead career. Fas fwd to the 90s, the week Dusty is due to be inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, Dusty dies.

@@SephPlays But it's always given me new appreciation for the song. It was always a cool song, but once I knew more of the story, it made it all the better. I remember when she died in the 90s.
Dusty was such a talent. The best female singer out of the UK. A shame she passes in 1999.
Loved this song so much when it came out!
Great song. The only big song they didn’t sing when I saw them in concert with New Order this past summer. Btw, you check out the group Electonic, who are a collaboration between PSB and New Order. They’ve got quite a few very good tunes.

Loved Electronic for long time Great songs so listenable
From « ACTUALLY » LP ! Great period ! My favorite LP from PSB
You don't want to say you didn't know your British treasure Dusty Springfield??? Well, PSB did and resurrected her career! She was almost forgotten by that time, unbelievable as it seems. This song was kind of a test for their forthcoming collaboration. PSB wrote the hits "Nothing Has Been Proved" and "In Private" for Dusty afterwards. They did the same with Liza Minnelli, by the way 😉

Neil wrote the song as a duet in order to examine the two sides of a breakup. Dusty plays the older female employer who seduced her younger male employee. Neil plays the employee who went along with her until she cast him aside because he wanted more than sex. Now she misses him, but he is having none of it. There are two sides to every story. Here you are presented both. The listener can decide. This was such a huge hit that PSB went on to produce most of her solo album "Reputation", which also includes tracks produced by Dan Hartman and others. The first single from this album was "In Private", which is a perfect example of her amazing vocals out front of PSB instrumentation.
Ty nie znałeś Dusty :-) To najlepsza wokalistka świata i moja ulubiona. Pozdrawiam :-)
They had regrets not doing a full album with her, even if they produced other songs for her (like In private, Occupy my mind) Even if it's great, What have i done is not their best song, in my opinion. They made a more modern version during their nightlife tour. The origin of the song came from the time Neil was working at smash hits. A rap tune came to his mind with "what have i done". Then later the song was composed in three parts and they were fond of Dusty so they choose her. Neil said he imagined an older woman and his employee having an affair and breaking up, regretting it. The song could have been on their first album Please.
You def picked up on Dusty’s husky, surly voice 🔥 Just a fantastic song
You can talk a lot😮...it s a marveollus song with marveollus Pet Shoop Boys.......❤😂🎉😅😊
