Pes anserine bursitis is a condition that occurs when the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac, located between the tendons and bones on the inner side of the knee becomes inflamed. The pes anserine bursa is located at the upper part of the tibia bone, where three tendons - the sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus - attach to the bone.
Pes anserine bursitis is typically caused by repetitive stress or overuse of the knee joint, such as from running, jumping, or cycling. Other factors that can contribute to the development of this condition include obesity, arthritis, or previous injuries to the knee.
Common symptoms of pes anserine bursitis include pain and tenderness on the inner side of the knee, swelling, and stiffness in the joint. Pain may be worse when bending the knee, climbing stairs, or during physical activity.
Treatment for pes anserine bursitis usually involves rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain and swelling. Physical therapy and exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles around the knee may also be recommended. In more severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary.
