PERFORMANCE REVIEW | WATER TEST AFTER J16 CAROLINA SKIFF TRANSOM UPGRADES + POLLING PLATFORM

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In June of 2022, we had a very unfortunate incident in the Florida Keys with our J16 Carolina Skiff. The boat was taking on water and it turns out it was because of a busted, rotten transom. The transom was giving and bending upon acceleration which was causing major performance issues and finally on this outing we began to see water intrusion because of the cracked transom.
Upon discovery of this problem, we decided not only to rebuild the transom but to completely transform the rear end of the boat building a new fiberglass rear deck with rod holders and cup holders as well as building on a polling platform. The platform we got is a little large for a J16 Carolina Skiff and I was concerned that with all of the upgrades we gave to the boat that the added weight would cause more performance issues or even cause the boat to be unusable.
After almost 18 months of labor and effort to get the boat where we wanted it to be, this day would mark the first voyage on the water to test out the upgrades we made to the boat. How would it perform? Would it be too heavy? Is the weight of the boat going to be balanced correctly? Will Lorenzo be able to stand on the polling platform? How fast will the boat go - will the added weight cause a decrease in speed? All of these questions and more will be answered in this video.

Thanks for the inspiration! I’m picking up a J14 this weekend and can’t wait to start building it out. Your build is my favorite out of the many videos I watched and I’m probably going to copy it pretty closely lol. Simple, efficient, and looks great! I have a 15hp Mercury four stroke EFI that I’ll be putting on and I’m a little worried about power… What do you think about automatic trim tabs? They’ve worked well for me in the past, but I’ve never owned a skiff or ran a flat bottom. Do you think they’d help increase efficiency and improve planing/stability? I’m hoping I won’t have to upgrade power.

Wow thanks bro. I appreciate the love!!! To be perfectly honest, we probably added a little too much weight. I’m thinking about going up to a 40 hp. The trim tabs are a great idea. I thought about trying those as well. If we have two people on the boat it runs fine. Add a third dude and it gets really sluggish. Especially with a full live well

What prop do you have? I have a 25 Yamaha 2-stroke, and have more weight than you do and I get 26.5 reliably. Using a Solas 10.13" Diameter, 13" Pitch. I have a 1999 J16.

Try a set of #Bennett self adjusting trim tabs. I have two boats and both have these trim tabs installed my 19 foot Carolina skiff DLX would have difficulty planning, but also would porpoise once on plane which made the boat uncontrollable with the installation of these trim tabs. The book plains easily, and I can run it at full throttle, and the boat is now comfortable and performing properly, I also have a 10 foot Avon rib in that boat had trouble planning but with these trim tabs it made a world of difference. Nice job on the refurb. Also, have you verified that the engine is propped so with the least amount of weight, it can run to its highest RPM?

Because the hall of the boat is so light, it definitely is a little less stable in the back for the platform, but it does work
